I know plenty about Americans, brother. I've only lived here all of my life.
...and you're one of the more articulate members of the forum (plus, from all your previous posts, I had always assumed that you were American.)

But I have to ask about this:
All self-aggrandizing posers. And that's just a list off the top of my head. You want a list of coaches who think they're more important than the games they coach? Geno Auriemma and Pat Summit in women's college basketbal
It's not the first time I've seen Geno take a bashing on this forum but let me add my perspective.
Around these parts, Geno is held in nothing but high regard.
Brash? Sure. But it's his take-no-prisoners type of confidence that inspires a lot of people. I can tell you first-hand that he does plenty for the community, and the exploits and victories of his teams have done an enormous amount of good in terms of empowering many, many girls and women throughout the region. His swagger is viewed only in a positive light by most everyone in his home state.

I've been to several home games (you think cycling fans are hardcore? ;)) and what that team does, under Geno's leadership, for women's self-esteem is remarkable and nothing but positive. I knew a girl whose family was involved with the school program and it was quite impressive to witness up close. Young and old alike are truly inspired by the team's example.

But do not, DO NOT, ever question a referee's call in favor of the team, interrupt anyone in the room during a broadcast, or expect any sort of rational reaction in the very rare event of a loss.:D
I digress...

I'm just curious what your perspective is on a coach that is so well respected and inspiring to those who rub shoulders with him. But trust me, it's nothing personal to me, I'd just like to know how he's viewed from other parts.

Granville57-Every coach does stuff for the community. It's the cult-like status that gets built up around these people, becoming an ego-feeding machine that creates athletes and coaches who think they are more important than the game.

Separate the good works from the persona and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I never said Geno didn't do good things. I said he was a self-aggrandizing egomaniac. If he wasn't, he's agree to play Tennessee twice every year. It's one of the few regular season games that would matter and would really do women's college basketball some good.

But these two coaches think their egos are more important than the game. And if you've ever seen a press conference with either one of them, you'd know what I'm talking about.

And this type of phenomena is distinctly American in nature. Armstrong would never have been allowed to go as far as he has if he weren't American, with the whole cycling world sucking up to the dollars the US market represented. Just like Diego Maradona could only have come out of Argentina at that particular time in history. His story is uniquely Argentinian in nature. Sure, there are athletes like him and Armstrong everywhere, but something about their stories make them distinct to their surroundings.

as Maxiton suggested on the Landis letters thread, the wonderboy camp are trying to get the doping out in their managed style to lessen the impact if and when they drop the bomb.

But Wonderboy had better be very careful how he delivers his confession if that is the plan, because the sport and all those still heavily involved will not necessarily forgive him should he shít on it from a great height. The cycling media might just well bite back, the sponsors too, Twek giro etc... will not be happy to have a sport they are trying to make bucks from dragged yet again and this time by its so called golden goose through the mire.

interesting times ahead.

I don't know where else to post this so I'll just leave it here.

I was watching the Versus replay of Flanders, and the following statement actually came out of Phil Liggett's mouth, as (I believe) Chavanel was working his way up one of the climbs.

“...looks like Lance Armstrong on this climb with his ‘high cadence.'’’

I am not making that up!

When will they just...STOP!?!?!

Oh, and did you know that, early on, George Hincapie was a "favorite" for the day? :p

Liggett must get paid for every mention of LA.

I've already confirmed on the "blurred lines" thread that Liggett and Sherwins' media company are paid by Livestrong. For journalistic integrity they should highlight this in each program they broadcast. None the less they categorise themselves as "entertainers" not journalists.

I'm so glad I don't have to listen to these two feckers anymore.

The other thing that angers me about "the joke that is Versus", is that they're doing absolutely nothing to grow the sport. There was one brief interview with JV, but besides that there was nothing to introduce any new riders or teams to the general audience.

To mention Armstrong in the middle of Flanders is absurd
Big George is still "their guy" and, it would seem, their only guy.
The Versus world is such a tiny one. I don't think they even mentioned the usually over-hyped Radio Shack one single time. What, now they don't exist without LA?

Then there are all the Michelob commercials to deal with. Was that Lance swinging an f'ing golf club?

Those idiots in the booth have been so complicit over the years in the downgrading of the sport that it's infuriating.

I'm just grateful for the races that Universal Sports covers.

Versus and Universal sports have merged. Soon all bike racing will be on Universal Sports. On the bad side Frankie will not be part of it, thanks to a nice call from Wonderboy's people he will no longer be part of the Tour broadcast team. Only person not invited back

During the face-on dialogue with both on camera I couldn't help but notice they both looked like the plumbing's backed up in their hotel room...permanently. Even the stupid Armstrong cadence comment couldn't dislodge the mammoth toilet trout that is their career vehicle.

That sucks, but as long as they don't replace Gogo with P&P, I'll watch. They do that, and I'm going to watch in a foreign language.

I'll see if I can dig up the phone numbers and e-mails so we can bombard them about Frankie.

Overall though this is really disappointing. Comcast is very homogenous, while when Universal Sports got started they had some pretty cool stuff on there, such as XC skiing with live feeds, which often meant no announcers, and graphics with various languages. They did this with Basque country and a few cycling races too their first year. Now, they are growing to try to be like ESPN, though perhaps not as jock related.

Their World cup skiing commentary was first rate and I agree about Gogo as the preferred alternative to anyone involved with VS. Bob Roll's bit has long past it's shelf life and P&P looked drained of their false enthusiasm. Not that the enthusiasm was worth listening to except for comic relief.
