Matthews is not made for the cobbles (hard to follow Sagan on that type of climb) and except for Hayman, Gerrans and Haussler the rest of the team was not that strong. Kristoff had a useful foil in EBH and the sprint showed he did not have the legs to attack like in RVV. Both teams had strong contenders for the win and the team numbers/strength to bring about the sprint, which was their smartest option.
Degenkolb's ride to track Stybar was impressive, but he completely emptied himself and ended up nowhere- at least the other two came in the top 4.
I think no one expected Sagan to attack solo, nor as strongly as that. In the end his legs were just superior.
