OH YEAH BABY!!! ANOTHER PURITO YEAR LEFT!! :)
Seriously? I mean, I like the guy, but this just seems strange. I know, Contador also announced this would be his last season but he then announced to keep on racing in the middle of the season, but announcing that he will do another year one month after his big good by is just very strange.
I just hope that Voeckler will effectively end racing after Tour 2017. Not because I dislike him, but because we need someone who is true to his word.

It's quite simple: Purito wanted to retire after Río, but in the end his goodbye Tour was not great due to the fact he had to ride the Italian classics in horrible shape.

So his final months as a pro rider were frustrating. He wants to retire on his own way. If a team like Bahrain gives you the opportunity to do that, and give you the security of a technical job for 2 years, why say no?

It seems he wanted a bit of security for his post-race years in terms of income. Katusha must not have offered him any and Bahrain did. Not so strange IMO. The competitive bug must still be kicking in him. Plus he didn't exactly end 2016 on a performance high note. Maybe he sees this as an opportunity leave the competitive side on better terms. 2016 just seemed to be a year where he was not himself, declining years or not.

What does that even mean? The only person a retiring rider has to be true to is him/herself. If they decide to change their mind because of whatever circumstances, who are we to judge? It's their career and their lives to navigate as they see fit. An opportunity arose to continue to compete and then have a job in the sport afterwards--seems like a good plan.

Let's wait and see. This result doesn't show anything considering the circumstances.A Vuelta as a goodbye race would be great and a new team could bring some motivation for him.

Why? He decided to retire because he wants to spend more time with his family and doesn't want to be away for 250 days a year.

I think that hasn't change really

His agent:
“We are not ruling out anything right now,” Edo told Cyclingnews. “Nothing is signed with anybody and there are lots of different options on the table.”
“Joaquim wanted to retire in the Olympics, but this obligation to race in Italy has changed his point of view. He wants to leave the sport in the way he wants to leave it.”

I know. But he said before the start of Lombardia he is going to retire for 99%. But maybe that 1% gets the upperhand ;)

1% prevailed after all
Great to have J.Rod around for another year.

Hope he doesn't ride the Tour. Would be neat to see him in the Giro with Nibs.

I definitely approve.

That's a lot of words to just say that he continues for the money ;)

Wait, wha...?
This Bahrain Merida team isn't a joke?
Are you effing serious?
The UCI is going to allow a team sponsored by a dictator into the peloton?
Shame on the UCI and anyone involved in this project.

Yes, I don't know why people feel the need to talk around that obvious fact. Cycling careers are short, money runs out eventually and there's nothing wrong with a rider looking after his future by taking a giant pile of money to ride a probably mediocre extra season.

I hope he doesn't ride any GTs at all. Liege should be his main target. Seeing him in Strade Bianche would be fun.

He shouldn't even ride Amstel. That is Gasparotto's race.

I don't care if he has to ride a gt as a domestique, but I'd love to see him go all out for LBL one last time.

Yeah LBL should be his main focus. Winning it would complete his legacy.

I wouldn't him seeing him as a stage hunter in a GC either but I think his days a GT rider are over unless he does "a Horner".

Perfect Tour route for him. And favourable environment.
Hard to expect him in 2013.shape, but that Purito could've had a chance of winning a GT next season.

Let's hope this is not the case, for almost any other team I'd love to see him finally nail that GT win but for the horrid team he's signed up with I hope he DNF's in every race he's starts and enjoys his fat final pay check

I'm assuming everyone here lives in a country where it's okay to criticize the government without fear of retribution.
It seems weird to say that I feel grateful for being one of them. I mean, it should be a given, right?
I don't mean to come across as sanctimonious, but I really have a hard time grasping the lack of attention being paid to the situation.
The team from Bahrain is funded by people who torture those who want to have a voice.
They beat and torture those who advocate for a democratic country, and we're here talking about Purito's decision to ride one more year.
Only thing more depressing about the UCI's decision to allow this team into the peloton is the realization that some people on this board who are writing from a democratic and free society will want me to shut up.
That's effed.

And Zubeldia, Sanchez, Contador and Valverde. These Iberian lynxes just wouldn't retire. :D

Going to be weird when all those guys + Lulu are gone. Not sure if he's got it in him but it would be nice to see Purito pick up one more big win before he retires.

it really is a shame that team like that is even allowed to exist in civilized world

Team like what? They didn't even started

started with what? torturing people who don't obey/agree with you. well... sure they already started
hope they got booed during whole season. and don't even start with "don't mix sport and politics" - it's bullsh*t once the team is owned by a dictator, abuser and torturer.
