What is the situation with Sanchez at the moment - I have read he is recovering from a crash but am wondering what is mind set is - is he likely to complete the Tour or can we expect him to abandon at some stage?

Frank Schleck on offer at 12/10 to get more mountain points and I am starting to think that could be a cracking bet.

Would appreciate any insights.

I don't think it's a very good bet. Samu is not a very good prologue rider (yesterday was worse than normally though). But he recently came back from altitude and is not yet as his peak, by the time the mountains come he can very well be in really good shape and be one of the greatest.

What was an expected broken ribs which he sustained at the Dauphine actually turned out to be bruised ribs and though he was poor in comparison with his usual standards at the Dauphine he should have had enough time to recover, even though it may have meant he would be behind the other contenders in terms of preparation..

That he performed poorly in the prologue is not something to be overtly worried about as he will find his form and feet in this Tour, but it could though unlikely be an indication of something wrong.

The bet with Schleck is a difficult one to figure as Frank could not drop in form as he has been threatening to do, yet he may and then he ,may decide to go for KOM points as he will be out of GC contention even so he may go solely for stage wins and KOM points if he perfoms poorly in the TT as is expected.. Sanchez on the other hand may be to focused on GC to beat Schleck in the KOM but it is hard to say without knowing for certain how things will turn out..

After the Dauphiné, Samu took a weeks rest and after that went to altitude. He felt better than in the Dauphiné during the prologue, is confident, says the Tour is three weeks and that he will improve every day.

In other words, don't worry, his time will come.

Long interview with samu in cyclismo al fondo today. He is hopeful but not certain about his recovery.

He is also asked about his opponents and the answer for every one of them besides Evans and wiggins is basically - he is very good, he could podium.

Horner comments reveal that Frank is there GC guy, but mountain points might be the real goal?

They have two GC guys. Schleck and Kloden.

He obviously doesn't have to look after Kloden, seeing as they hate each other.

Yep, got that too from his comments yesterday. Nothing direct, but he omitted Klöden from ever having been on the podium. Klöden is an odd cat, but he's got to be the other GC guy as I've said before.

As for Samu, I hope it was just the chaos of the finish today.

So sad to to see Samu go out this way. Not just the TdF but not to be able to defend his Olympic title. He has had no luck this year and the Spanish in general have had more than their fair share of bad luck this tour.

I was hoping there was an outside chance of him winning this year.

So unfair on Samu!

The same goes for the rest of Spaniards: Freire, Rojas (both already out because of serious crashes), Luis León Sánchez and Valverde (involved in many a crash of their own).

Todays crash was heartbreaking to watch. Hope he'll be ok soon.

The crashes today and yesterday brought the thoughts back to the high speed crash in the 2010 Vuelta that took out Antón in the leaders jersey. Sad days.

Love seeing Sanchez ride and was hoping for alot from him this tour, it's always a shame when someone like Sanchez has to pull out, especially so soon in the tour.
