Had they simply gone "Sepp's ahead on the road, so we ride for him until he's dropped - if he's dropped" then yes the last week would have been tame, but it would have been understood.
Had they said "since we've got the podium locked down, the team are free to race" then it might have ruffled some feathers, but the winner would have been the best rider in the race.
Instead, they let them race just long enough to showcase that Kuss was the weakest rider of the three, then reined it all in in the face of online criticism, leaving a wholly unsatisfactory outcome from a racing point of view, leaving only those who wanted Kuss to win for sentimentality reasons satisfied; we know Roglič and Vingegaard could have gone faster but weren't allowed, we know Kuss got the win as a charity case as he was the weakest of the three, and we know the team either weren't able to control their leaders if they did intend to support Kuss, or they allowed social media to dictate their team policy.
