ASO will want Wiggins at the start line. The French public will want him there. The sponsors will want him there. The British public will want him there. I would think most cycling fans will want him there.

And not just going through the motions, but there to compete. There have been cries of him trying to dodge Contador and I guess that is the showdown people want to see, even if it's just to see Contador layeth the smack down on him in the high mountains.

Which will probably happen.

Realistically if he goes to the Giro he's unlikely to be able to ride hard in the Tour. Although imagine the meltdown here if he won both. As far as winning the Grio and Tour goes, Hesjedal had high hopes of it this year. Garmin definitely went to the Tour thinking they had a chance.

I think casual British 'sports fans' want him there, real cycling fans probably aren't bothered in the least.

Good post Jimmy. If Wiggins is genuinely going for the Tour next year, he really cannot go full out for the Giro. In fact, I can see a similar route to the Tour next year that he followed this year and that won't include the Giro. Which is maybe better suited to Sky's young Columbian climbers in any case. Would be interesting to see how they cope given a leadership role now that they have matured a fair bit.

A Froome/Wiggins stand off would certainly give an extra flavour to the Tour next year:)

So he's had the bilharzia treatment yet again just 10 days ago:

Froome flew in earlier this week and revealed he recently underwent treatment for bilharzia. The tropical disease is caused by parasitic worms and has affected him before in recent years.

"In terms of that illness, I actually went for a check 10 days ago and found out that I did have to repeat the treatment again," he said. "It means these big pills that basically poison you and kill everything in your stomach and I took that in the last week. I am feeling much better now and hopefully I am in the clear for another six months or so.

Interesting that he thinks he'd have taken a minute out of Wiggins on La Toussuire if he'd been allowed to go for it.

I also wasn't aware that Froome was room-sharing with Moises Duenas at the 2008 Tour when he got done for EPO.

I like this extract:

In 2006, at the age of 21, with a computer hacker's stealthy determination, Froome found a way into European cycling. "The Kenyans didn't have a team going into the under-23 world championships but I had access to the Kenyan cycling association's email account. I remembered how to get into the chairman's Hotmail and so I emailed the UCI, saying, 'We're going to send a cyclist to the U23 worlds.'"

Froome's ruse worked and, when he arrived in Europe, "I had to take four buses and walk a couple of ks, carrying two bikes and a suitcase to a little B&B outside Salzburg, in the rain. I then had to rush to the managers' meeting that afternoon. I had a map and I set off in the rain. The map disintegrated within minutes so I got lost in downtown Salzburg. I came in 20 minutes late to the auditorium where a guy was talking about the support cars. I walked in right at the front and was told, 'No, no, this is a meeting for managers only.' I said, 'I'm the manager.' The guy gave me a strange look."

The next day Froome "got to the startline for the time trial and 150m into the race I rode straight into a commissaire holding a bunch of papers which went flying up in the air. Both of us hit the ground. It was quite a start to European racing."

He's certainly an ambitious chap. It's sad in a way that I simply don't believe in Froome's performances because his rise to the top is a fantastic story in many ways isn't it?

I'd love to know how the bio passport works with regards to Froome's bilharzia. His numbers over the last three years must be all over the place surely? I don't doubt that he genuinely has suffered from the disease but to me it seems perfectly possible that it provides an almost open ticket to take advantage of it through the use of blood doping.

It's makes you wonder why he keeps going back to Kenya/SA to catch the same diesese each year.

Isn't he worried about ruining his chances for the Tour de France? :rolleyes:

I don't think you have to be re-infected for the illness to come back; I think most of the time, you'll always have it in you somewhere.

Kenyan altitude training seems to agree with him, and it seems to work for a few other long distance athletes.

But I am still left wondering if his body doesn't continue to produce new red cells when it doesn't need to.....not doping, then, but given an advantage by overcoming a disadvantage, if that makes sense?
But what his blood passport looks like, goodness only knows.
For me the clincher with Froome was how tired he was at the Vuleta 12, when he is finally given the chance to lead the team.....didn't look like a doper to me at all

Oh, come on. This takes the biscuit. This clown has a rare blood disease whenever he is not racing a race he has targeted. This has to be the most transparently bogus excuse ever. It beats out Rumsas' mother-in-law.

This is Armstrong-like arrogance, just treating the fans like they are bone freaking stupid.

There's a video in the Vuelta of Froome soft pedaling giving time away to Contador and Valverde. He sees the camera and instantly puts a pained expression on his face.

It was odd. Allow me the time to dig it out.

In addition someone tested positive at the Vuelta. No one knows who but something got mixed up and the sample was "tainted".

All very strange. The entire race was.

Well it couldn't be a Sky rider could it.

Not with the massive team wide sophisticated doping system and notorious doctor who's riders have never tested positive. High levels of a doping substance?
