I'm confused... see below. Roberto Ferrari was the "crasher" and he was relegated to last place (part 1 of confusion) as he was given 192nd place.

I too was unaware of rule change. Taylor Phinney crossed finish line in ambulance (and I am unsure whether he had bike in ambulance with him) he placed 198th...behind Roberto (part 2 of confusion).

placing as follows:

192Roberto Ferrari (Ita) Androni Giocattoli
193Jack Bobridge (Aus) Orica GreenEdge Cycling Team0:03:00
194Miguel Minguez Ayala (Spa) Euskaltel - Euskadi0:04:43
195Dennis Van Winden (Ned) Rabobank Cycling Team0:05:03
196Martijn Keizer (Ned) Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team
197Gianni Meersman (Bel) Lotto Belisol Team0:05:25
198Taylor Phinney (USA) BMC Racing Team

I note Bobridge is taking it cautiously.

When you are DQ'ed from a sprint you go to the back of the group you finished, so that's why Ferrari is ahead of the late arrivals.

Phinney is unclassified because technically he didn't finish, but because it was inside 3km and at that point incapable of cross the line it doesn't matter in terms of getting the same time and progressing to the next stage.

that is the old rule, the new rule is if crash happened inside 3km, you don't have to cross the finish line by yourself:D

That's only if the bone-headed occurs.

Which I think is a genuine improvement, soemthing good by the UCI for a change.

Why have folks hobble to a meaningless (same time) finish and delay treatment of their injuries ?

Makes a good trivia question: how can you place last on every stage in a race, win no intermediate time bonuses, and still win the general classification?

Are there really people here arguing that a bike racer should not try and do good in a race? There are time bonuses here. And while Taylor Phinney is not a legit GC contender i would think the goal for BMC is to hold on to it as long as possible.
I think it shows more character that they are fighting it out tooth and nail to hold the lead then to just coast over the line.

His stated goal had been to lead out Thor Hoshvod, so it makes sense he was as far up as he was at 200 meters.

So, race finish in a grand tour is at the bottom of a mountain top descent, with 2.9 kms to go there is a crash and the race leader cannot continue, so he gets to keep the race jersey ??????

Unless I am mistaken this rule only applies to flat stages.

This only applies in sprint stages. The goal is to minimze the number of people sprinting for the finish so that fewer crashes occur in mass sprints.

Total class the way BMC supported Taylor in the TTT today, when Taylor was having a bad day. That is how it is done, chapaue to the DS, management and team.
I remember Ole Ritter dragging Jauques Anquetil during the Barrachi Trophy race, good one well done.

His bike handling skills are not the best. Will be a classics rider not a GT man but will need to ride some kermesses in Belguim to find the cobbled form in a large group.

Just another american DopingMan as Armstrong, Hamilton and many others

'American' Doping Man or just Doping Man?

...and no I do not think there is doping going on with him. Parents are staunch anti-doping....read some history. Just sounds like a flaky accusation that you threw out.

Because of his late arrival he was not able to pre-ride the course today. Rode it cold.

He won the U-23 Paris Roubaix.....twice.

I'm teasing a little bit.

He'll be fine. Has a good career ahead of him and he rides super well. Been impressed even when crashing that he just gets up and rides again.

Still think classic nor GT. But thats a good thing.

Even though he has mashed through the cobbles and won these convincingly I still hold my breath when he bobbles and does gangly things on his bike. :D

Even tho all the hyping doesn't make me love the guy i must say he looks like one of those guys i will end up liking, down to earth funny guy that doesn't seem to care at all about July.

About his Roubaix aspirations, well the u23 doesn't mean a lot, unless popo starts owning boonen and canc from now on, but did show signs of being good in roubaix this year and he may be one of the best once boonen and canc start their decline which will still take a couple years to happen, but he does has time as he still very young.

I must say one thing tho, Sep seems to be even better on the cobbles then phinney so those 2 could be the next boonen and canc in a few years, unless the monster growing inside the OPQS starts showing all his potential ofc :p
