Found it. Matthews was supposed to be going, but as a domestique for the big dogs Goss and Gerrans. It seems odd that they dropped him, though. I'm guessing they were afraid that he wouldn't be of much use as a domestique ...

Update 1: A newcomer takes the first trick

The first points of the year has been handed out, and the rookie Akubra is the first leader of this season. With his almost all Australian team, he has scored 466 points with the most important contributors being Matthews, Von Hoff and of course Durbridge.

Durbridge is quite an important rider to have on your team if you want a shot for an early leadership. 4 teams in the top 10 have him in their team: Akubra, King Of The Worlds, bubbles and coinneach. Only one team who has picked Durbridge isn't among the 10 best teams so far: GP Blanco who's currently in 13th place with points only from Durbridge.

King Of The Worlds takes second place with points from Durbridge, Matthews and Sutton while AAC1983, who I picked as one of my 11 favorites for the title this year, also is off to a good start because of Matthews, Dennis, Von Hoff and McCarthy. The same goes for another of my favorites for the title, Kvinto, who has collected 184 points so far and currently is sitting in 5th place.

Interestingly, only two teams in the top 10 have the same constellation of riders: ingsve and sublimit who both just makes it into the top 10 with points from Matthews, Von Hoff and Sutton. Not a bad start for the winner of the first edition of the game, ingsve, who's looking to improve on last year's rather dissapointing 49th place.

It's still very early days but the Australian riders seem popular this year as only 24 teams are yet to score a point.

I regret not picking him. Can see him outscoring some of my own cheap riders quite considerably. Just forgot about him

Mathews is already getting on my nerves and getting me very worried. Not because of his form, he is missing TDU and early season form just means a greater level of fitness. Remember he was in similar good form last year with his win at TDU. It is more the fact that he has the ability to score a lot of points. I did not take him because I just do not trust the guy. He always has seemed a bit on the volatile side. He is a big talent though and can score a lot of points so could be a big mistake.

Yet 400 points wont be the make or break it is the combination in its entirety which will be. I just hope I did not choose to leave out many more MMs from my team..

I'm pretty sure this is the 3rd year in a row I've been 11th after the first update, very strange. The first year it was my highest point of the year, last year among the lowest. I wonder what it'll mean this year...

edit: of course I was curious and checked, 11th after the Aussie nats the first year and in a 3-way tie for 9th last year, so pretty much the same thing.

For the moment points from McCarthy and Matthews which both showed promise for the year to come, so it is a good if unspectacular start to the year. Now Berhane, Wackermann and Rolland need to deliver in Gabon so I can move up in the hierarchy.

Only got points from Von Hoff and Porte but i am hopeful that riders like Goss, Morton, Haas and Bobridge can start to go well in the next week or so.
I don't know Hepburns' schedule but i am sure he will go well when the season starts for him.

I am regretting not picking Durbridge (who was not on my shortlist) or Matthews who was on the shortlist. Both of them have grown a year older, they evidently like the team set-up and they can both pick up points in their events.

Happy with my place after the first update even though it doesnt mean anything. Expecting big things from McCarthy at TDU (top 10 is in his range), great that Matthews won't ride since i didin't pick him

I considered him but in the end I decided he wasn't good enough. He's kind of expensive and I don't know much about him. If he'd cost 50% less I would have picked him.

I don't know much about him but I trust Riis to work his usual magic on Australians (he is the one that brought Goss and Porte to the pro ranks after all). Plus, he can shine in short ITTs if nothing else (won the prologue of tour de l'avenir last year) meaning he can get bucketloads of points in TT-oriented races like Durbridge last year (though probably not in the same proportions).
