Year in Review: August
Whoops! I totally dropped this recap project in December. I got distracted with Omicron and then only remembered a couple of days before the 2022 game deadline. Well, it's slow in the early season, so I'll do the last 3 months of 2021 in the next week for the completists among us (it bugs me to leave it unfinished even though it was entirely my fault).
August was definitely a dip after the high profile combo of the Tour and Olympics, as the main race of the month (the Vuelta) didn't end until the 5th of September. Aside from that, only two WT races took place (Pologne and Bretagne Classic, with the cancellation of the Hamburg race), but there were a fair amount of PS races including Burgos, Denmark, Norway, Deutschland, and Brussels. So it was low-key, but there was some racing!
August's Top Scorers
This is our lowest high-score for the month since February, but comparable to some of the other months! A couple of teams clear 2000 points, and atop them all is vladimir. Their team was one of the 39 owners who breathed a sigh of relief at the Remissance (sure, I'll go with it) in August, as Evenepoel beat up on the competition in some smaller races to make up for his lacklustre season thus far, winning Denmark, a 1.PS and a 1.1 race to nab 426 on the month. Mike Teunissen (214 points, 34 teams) had a sneaky good August and Alexander Kristoff (208 points, 14 teams) somehow cleared 200 points in August even though I don't recall this at all despite owning him. Politt (194 points), Bardet (190, could have been more if not for crashing in Burgos) and Cort (165, an early sign of his good form for the Vuelta for his 5 owners) were vladimir's other top riders.
R O Shipman also cleared 2000 points thanks to Evenepoel, but with a different undercard of Mohoric (237 points, 5 teams), Odd Christian Eiking (256 points, 3 teams) and Rein Taaramae (182 points, 7 teams), because of course the Vuelta stage and jersey points accumulated in August even if the GC ones didn't. Sneekes, well, sneaks into 3rd for the month, without a marquee showing like Evenepoel but with points from 25 of 33 riders, led by a breakout month by Mikkel Honore (272 points, 4 teams) and a resurgent and frankly inspiring month by teammate Fabio Jakobsen (220 points, 3 teams). Add in some scores close to 200 from the likes of Politt, Bardet, and Dylan Teuns, and you've got a good month.
Top 10 at the end of August
After having a 250ish point lead at the end of July, Object followed that up by finishing 4th in the month of August to extend that lead to over 1200 points! So at this point it looked pretty set, which made it quite remarkable that Squire made it so close in the end. Six of the teams in the final top 10 were in the top 10 here, so there was still some movement in the final months, but the very top was looking pretty clear at this point.
