Sorry to bring the happy vibe of the thread to a crashing halt but tomorrow I have to take my best friend to the vet for euthanization. She's almost 19yrs old and developing some fairly serious kidney problems so I think it's time. I cannot overstate how much this is going to suck. I guess I wanted to post this to make sure that you all appreciate your animal friends and the bond you have with them. Give them a squeeze or a big piece of fish or just take a minute from your hectic lives to think about how much they give and how little they ask in return.

I put down my dog the beautiful Robin 5 years ago and still cry when I think of her. Also 2 of my cats but they both died of natural causes. It was such a hard decision to put down my dog. She was playing with me and started limping and within 2 hours was paralyzed except for her left front leg and head. I tried for 3 days to find an alternative but the sparkle left her eyes and I felt I was only keeping her alive for me and not in her best interest. I'm balling like a baby now. I miss her so much

thats a long life.

Be thankful, cats typically live 15 years. You were blessed.

My two cats give me nothing but grief. They hate to be picked up, hate to sleep with humans. But, they eat mice and give back a little in their own way.

yeah my roommate is allergic to cats. He should be moved out by the end of the month. I have a dog not really by choice but she was in need. I really need a mouser. The only problem is that I want an Indoor/outdoor cat (no litter box) but my yard is not cat friendly. Life is funny some times I really prefer cats but my last 2 pets have been dogs

You have my sympathy.

I have a great cat, named Stanley. He was a rescue, which I couldn't believe! I felt so lucky to find him. I adopted him shortly after I returned home from Italy in 2006, while my wife was still on the run. I woke-up one Sunday particularly-lonely, decided I wanted a ginger-colored tabby and so went online and checked the shelters. Almost immediately I found a listing for just the cat I was looking for, and I went to meet him. I knew it was meant to be when he found ME, sticking his paw out of his cage, which was at waist level, and snagging my shirt collar to get my attention.

As I said, his name was Stanley - he was already chipped though the only info registered for him was that name...no owner info! I took him home later that day and it's been an adventure ever since. He's the first cat I've had that acts like a dog in some respects, especially when he follows you around the property like a guard dog. lol. He's an assassin, too, though I won't go into detail about his various kills. He's too cute for that lol...

I just checked on my patio, and there are twin dead chipmunks, presents of Stanley. Awwww...

Walk past my cat in the corridor and she will switch between watching your feet and looking up at you. Do the same in the dark and she gets right out of the way.

It seems she somehow knows we can't see in the dark like her, probably thinks we are helpless and need looking after (can't even see in the dark!? hahaha, noobs).

He looks sad. :(

But what a gorgeous animal, nonetheless.

My two cats aren't much to look at, but have a lot of "sentimental value" by means of how they came to live with me.

One is a total pia and likes to pull everything out of drawers and cupboards it's able to open, and the other...well he's just cool... after two long years he finally gave my poor dog who has been trying in vain to win his affection, a smooch on the kisser.

I think the dog was dumbfounded by the gesture.

Great shot rt. I used to have a cat that looked just like him. Nuttiest, toughest, and best cat ever. Not as tough as a coyote it turned out, but he was great while he lasted.

Whoa. Absolutely stunning photo of him/her. Looks right through you.

He/she also looks polydactyl? (Hard to tell in the photo... or, he just has big feet? :) ). I had one of those in college. Best and most intersesting cat I ever had. The entire neighborhood claimed ownership of him.

Lots of coyotes around here too (depsite my gun-toting neighbor's "best" attempts to erradicate them). Coyotes have eaten two of my cats. Needless to say the two I have now, stay indoors pretty much.

Sorry about your tough, nutty guy. :(

He has 7 toes on each front and 6 on each back...

Polydactyls reminds me of a trip we took a few years back to Key West, FL, where we visited the former home of Papa Hemingway. Today, the house in Whitehead Street is home to a large number of cats, all of whom are descended from Papa's own polydactyl:

I swear they do nothing but sleep all day. ;)

And while we're on gratuitous posts of cat images, here's a favourite of mine from a visit to Lacoste, France, the home of that other great writer the Marquis de Sade:

You're pretty handy with a camera, btw. Nice composition on these imho.
