You should not gain points for World's or Continental Championships - I'm not even convinced you should gain points for National Championships.

I feel the exact opposite about the worlds. Trade teams should always take priority over national teams. Of course, there is some value if one of your riders wins but there's no reason to provide a national team a domestique.
For several Olympic cycles the NHL paused their hockey season so players could compete for their national teams, though I guess you could argue it was only every 4 years.

They are limited because teams in the relegation battle will not release riders - Strange that you can not see this.
Partly yes, but even if that wasn't the case their team would be pretty weak. I can't think of any Spanish rider with a chance to win here.

I would think Garcia Cortina is their best bet not for the win but for a good placing on this course and he's on the team. Aranburu and Valverde would certainly strengthen the team a lot. But hey, look at Germany's team...

The same as Asgreen then.

What an unfortunate few seasons he has had. It seems less and less likely that he will ever find his Itzulia 2019 level.

I've always had a gripe about teams withdrawing riders from national championships (Sky/Ineos for ever and also Jumbo this year with Van Aert's dodgy knee).
I'd love to see a system where every rider has to ride their nationals and from there the team selection for the worlds is made. Maybe not the first eight over the line but say top 5 guarantees a place in the world championship team allowing for wild card places due to mechanicals or real injuries.
I can understand wanting to incentivise participation but to make in any way fair you would have to ensure your national road race parcours are similar in style to the Worlds course of that year or your team will be horribly mismatched.

Gaining points for the worlds feels fair as it is one of the most stacked fields of the season and a years goal for many riders.

National championships have far too much variation in depth and quality for them to fairly be included.

Points for the rider or counting for the trade team? The latter makes no sense at all. At least in the nationals, the riders are riding for the team that will gain the points.

Team rankings represent the overall value of the team and the quality of the riders it have in order for it to have value to be in the top tier. A World Champion should have a non negligible contribute towards a team intrinsic sport value to be a part of the top division.

That's why I think have the teams stay with all the points earned by the rider is less fair than having the rider possess a % of points who go with him to a new team if he changes sides.

Surely in the nationals the true spirit of the event should be that every rider rides for their own chances not riding for a designated colleague in their trade team.

Why should that be? I hear that repeatedly whenever the British NCs are aired and maybe they can do that since only 5 riders are left by mid-race. But every NC with strong teams are ridden as teams like every other race.
