Weak point. The crowds have been tiny.
Wollongong is a city of 350,000 people.. To be honest I was surprised it won the bid. It says more about the UCI and their planning. Wollongong has a healthy cycling community but its still a niche sport. If it was the cricket world cup, soccer or rugby league it would be a different matte entirely. I'm surprised that Australia is hosting again so soon after Geelong. Someone talked the local council and city authorities into the financial benefits of hosting such an event albeit planned during a pandemic. Maybe some tourist dollars will flow later but for locals that do enjoy cycling, they won't care about any of that and with Sydney only 80 minutes away by train even I'm surprised by the crowd sizes. Problem is there is also football finals this weekend in Australia. There should be a jump tomorrow at least.. ............and the weather will be better.

It's a shocking time of the year for Australia to hold the World's - This weekend is the final of the most popular sporting code in Australia being Australian Rules footy - One week earlier or one week later would have been fine.
The football wouldl never be re-scheduled and the cycling calendar is a tight one. Surprised the locals didn't bring that up. maybe they did but delaying it by a week would not have made much difference as the football is still on next weekend as well re Rugby League.

Yep. Not many will watch the women's RR with the AFL grand final on.

Having said that, the state of New South Wales isn't that crazy about AFL (though Sydney are in the grand final today).

Women's Basketball World Cup on in Sydney as well, but Australia is one of the sporting capitals of the world so no real surprise there are so many elite sporting events taking place simultaneously.

Bad crash there. I was surprised she got back on the bike as they showed her just after it happened. She hit her back on the curbing may have been just pain hope no real damage. Looked not to bad after getting on her bike so maybe not too bad.
