yesterday chelsea-psg, another illustration of why the away-goal rule sucks so hard.
after the 1-2 from Ibra, the game was over. Finito.
Without the away-goal rule, it could still have been a very exciting final 25 minutes.

Yes, but that would have deprived millions of neutral viewers of the pleasure of laughing at Chel$ki for those 25 minutes.

What's happening to Dutch football? Not qualifying for the EC is one thing. But Dutch coaches abroad suck. Dutch players abroad suck, except Robben when he's not injured.
There's not much to cheer for from a Dutch soccer perspective.
We've had better years.

Scholes is clueless. Blaming De Gea for Payet's free-kick.

Indeed! The ball couldn't have shaved the inside of the post any more finely. Today was probably the first time in 48 years supporting the Hammers that I felt we we had nothing to fear at OT because right now, we are the better team, and the first time I've come away feeling that we should have won. Still, an extra midweek evening fixture will be nice for the faithful. Speaking of faithful, there were 9000 Hammers there today!

And, "We've got Payet..."

Tragic incident today at Broussia Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park, where a 79 year-old fan died of infarctus during the game against Mainz 05. Upon learning the news of the death (60 minutes into the game), fans of both sides rolled up their banners and flags and remained silent until the 88th minute, when the whole stadium sang "You'll never walk alone".

sorry?

I read the headlines, "tragic incident, fan dies", only to then find out a 79 year old guy died from a heart attack.
For real, the fact that he was in the Stadium doesn't make this "tragedy" headline worthy.
There's young people dying every day.
From real tragic accidents.
Football is nice, but lets keep a bit of a sense of proportions here.
Thats not directed to you Christian, but to the newspapers and websites who made headlines out of this with the word "tragic" in it.

Tragic is considering old people any less worthy of dignification. ;)

sad strawman bigmac, and way to miss the point.

Might be that I misunderstood you.

''Only to then find out a 79 year old guy died from a heart attack''.

''There's young people dying every day''.

Let us agree, then, that that part was irrelevant. :)

missing the point bigmac.
so this 79-year old gets the "tragic incident" headlines because...because what exactly?
because it happened in a football stadium?
again, all proportion is lost here.

Let us agree, then, that that part was irrelevant. :)
let us agree that as a (former?) mod you shouldn't post strawmen. :)

Tonight's three points really should do it for Lesta. All credit to Ranieri and his players on a truly amazing achievement.

This fan tonight got offered £25,000 by Ladbrokes during tonight's game and refused it. He threw £10 on 5000/1.

Tonight's win rules out Arsenal and City. Still think Spurs are in with a shout.

Hope Leicester win it. Some achievement if it's done and refreshing to see.

At home and only 1 shot on target (and a pretty impressive shot at that)... 8 games left... they really have had some serious luck on their side, but will it really last the entire season?

has been a funny old season, so anything is still possible - watford was another example on the weekend - only 20 or 30% of possession and 2 shots on target, yet beat one of the league's top sides 2-1

I read an interesting quote recently by a serious football fan who goes to the stadium to support his team every time they have a home game. He said that ideally, a football stadium is a reflection of society, in that all groups of society should be represented. Children, adolescents, adults, old people; left-wing radicals, right-wing radicals, hooligans, gays, bankers, drunks... Of course depending on the success of the team, the ticket prices or the time and day of the game, some will be more represented than others.

I thought of that when I heard the news about the 79 year-old man dying. A football stadium is not a bubble and pretty much everything that can happen outside of it, can happen inside of it - including death. So it's a sad occurence of course, but the word tragic is maybe a bit of a stretch, you're right. In any case, I think the fans showed a very respectful and honorable response.

cheers, and agreed on all accounts.

yeah, my point (not understood by bigmac, but I think you grasp it) is that this wasn't a 'tragic incident' in a newspaper headline sense of the word.
Of course it is tragic for his family and friends and maybe for the guys who stood next to him when it happened. But I mean it's clearly not more or less tragic than any other 79 year old dying from a heart attack, yesterday, today, or tomorrow, and yet we don't get the same headlines for those people. And understandably so, because soon the word "tragic incident" would be void of any meaning, at least as far as its use in the press is concerned.
The fact that he died in a stadium doesn't make it more or less tragic, imo, which is what the german sports press seemed to try to bring across at least implicitly. So, just saying those headlines seemed disproportionate.

Bigmac inferring that I would find "old people any less worthy of dignification" is not only missing my point, but totally distorting it to place it (or me) in a negative light.
Coming from a mod, that's dubious. Maybe bigmac can expain why he finds those countless other 79 year old people who suffered fatal heart attacks on the same day "less worthy of dignification" .

What kind of team is that? Flamini and Iwobi starting.

One eye on the Everton game to help qualify for the Champions League next season. Ridiculous.

36% possession but come up with 20 shots on goal (and only 3 on target) sounds like they just shot every time they got the ball...

CL qualification would be pretty much a given already, no? Or does Wenger still think the title is a possibilty?

City and West Ham are right behind them. The league is gone. They would need to emulate the late great runs that won us the league in '98 and '02 and this team has shown nothing to suggest they're capable of doing so.

To be fair, I thought we played reasonably well at times last night. Iwobi actually played well too. Nevertheless, we could have all our players available like Cazorla, Ox, Wilshere, Ramsey and we still wouldn't have a hope against them. They're a country mile better than us at the moment. I will say this, they did give up a lot of opportunities over the two games. Their defence can be got at. It's just that front three is on another planet to anything we see in the game now. Definitely the best I've seen in my time watching football.
