Nah that's just because he missed the Giro this year http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/news/...a-winner-menchov-retires-media-164319815.html it sent him a "message"!

Where is it that he did well this year, PN? Was decent on PDBF last year too, oh well...

But if it's him the UCI will go after him since they said retirement was no excuse for Ullrich...Armstrong? Well that was another story'

Probably seeing drug fuelled Richie Porte blow him away like it was 2002 made him shake his head and say - f*** this.

During the first week of the Giro the Norwegian eurosport commentators talked about a grand tour winner having tripped the bio passport. They speculated that it was either Basso or Menchov. Both having suddenly becoming unavailable for the Giro.

Could the rumored BP case be Menchov?

If yes, this could be the retiring message preceding the revelation of his BP violation.

Or perhaps he made a deal with the UCI to not make anything public on the condition that he really retired permanently. (that would seem odd, but with the UCI, odd appears to be normal:rolleyes:).

Or perhaps this rumor was unfounded?

Sorry if this has been touched upon elsewhere. I haven't seen any clinic headlines.

Well, there is a big surprise. Team and its backer go against the UCI, one of its riders has a passport violation.

Dont know if the biopass had any role in his retirement - it is quite possible - but there are some other factors to consider...

Menchov is on record way back that this was likely his last season. He is also known for lack of confidence and motivation. being a classic introvert he does not want to continue along, or was hinted at, rodriguez who is clearly the team gt leader. And last but not least, the guy is drawing over a million euros while producing almost nothing in return...i would not be surprised if he was told to show the goods or quit...in total, i think he faded big time when the sport, according to some, made it more difficult for old-time dopers.

Ah I see the rumor came from the secret pro, somehow I found the right thread without even looking.:D

As for Menchov, that could also be an explanation. I could see his knee injury finally putting him in a mood for retirement.

If it's Menchov who is the supposed violation we might now in a few days or weeks or something. This reminds me of Verpalus retirement announcement, then a later revelation of his doping violation.

Given this rumour of a passport violation continues to only come from one source, with no alternative media sources hearing it, I question it's validity.

Menchov retires, Santambrogio wins a stage and sitting in 4th. Pro cycling is still in same balance

Can someone translate "Pro cycling is still in same balance" to English for me?

I think his implication is that as one successful doper retires, another one is rising through the ranks. Hence the balance stays the same.

i have no illusions about ANY clean years in cycling including the 2009 and even the 2013 giro.

keep in mind, all opinions about how clean the cycling was or is are speculations, however reasonable they might be...

denis, when watching him interviewed, might come across as an aloof idiot, but i very much doubt he is. a champion doper rarely is...

my speculation was that in the 2009 giro, he was likely blood doped but because of 2 specific factors he went untouched...those 2 were:
(i) 2009 was just 1 year after the official introduction of the uci blood passport, that is, it was still the year of data collection rather than aggressive legal prosecution. only an outrageous blood profile would pop you.
(ii) knowing how to execute an undetectable auto blood transfusion in combination with a venous epo micro-dosing was the way of those with balls, money and informed. the ruskie was one of them.

then, there is this individual response to being under a suspicion...each rider knows, without a letter from the uci, if he/she is being targeted. some reckless riders will continue unabated as the gamblers often do, yet others, i cal them the smarter lot, may curb the self -destructive doping because they have a lot to lose...i speculate (no pro0f) menchov was in the latter category past 2011.

that said, i believe menchov is a natural and quite talented grand tour rider. but far from the greats like eddy and greg (the contador facts are still unraveling).

just another opinion.

Santambrogio is one of the most obvious ones in a long time, possibly since Ricco

No he didn't he rode for Astana versions Saiz, Biver and Bruyneel.
no legacy culture?

like USPS changed when Armstrong retired. Or different cats came thru Rabobank?

legacy culture holds. lots of the medical programs are informal networks anyhow.
