Yates would be 2nd if he didn't have that bad day after he went in the breakaway. I kinda expected Bernal to be the favorite for the Giro but who knows.

I think on top form only Pinot is a better climber than Yates out of those heading to the Giro although Pinot seems to still be struggling with injury so Yates is favourite imo and he also has better ITT than the other main contenders.

It was a joke about Cees Bol, my friend, you might consider relaxing a little.
Ok, hard to spot the joke in there to be fair. Aside from Bol it’s been the current best sprinter in the pro peloton and Roglic is obviously top tier as well.

Oh, and I think I can just about manage to be relaxed enough to sleep tonight. ;)

I'm curious what is the explanation for Bernal. If Thomas still has time before TDF, Bernal should've been top form.

After todays time loss and factoring in their new strategy, Ineos should be going full ham tomorrow.

Great rides by Fabbro and Carr.

Movistar should really reconsider riding for Soler in every race bar the ones where he is in absolute peak shape.

What a ride today by Pogacar and by Wout (and Yates). Pogacar proves he is the man to beat from what we have seen. The unknown here is Roglic but with Pogacar gaining confidence since last year I think Roglic will have a very hard time beating him.

What can you say about Wout. His team let him down and he still managed to limit his losses. Superb performance. I would have loved to see how far MvdP could have followed but I am confident that he could not have stayed with Wout. But he has surprised us before. Looking forward to tomorrow!

It depends. Like how was that stage raced 8 years ago? Where they looking at each other? Cos Ineos drilled it and Pogi attacked very early
sky train all the way until 3 km to go, then various attacks. Looked like a pretty fast climb to me. I guess the tempo of the train wasn't as fast as they sold it.

He was annoyed when they said he weighed 80kg, in his worst winter (2 years ago) when he was visually "less fit" and said he was 78kg at that moment. I think it's safe to assume he is quite some kgs removed from 80, now, in form, during road season. Nobody's saying he weighs 65. The difference between 75 or 80 is immense. I read a report from Sunweb back in the day, when they were doing tests for Dumoulin (who won the Giro with 71kg), that per kg on a 30 minute climb, you save 20 seconds. That would mean the difference between 75 and 80 would make a difference of 1m40s on a 30 minute climb.

i remember lemond saying -- back in the day -- that 1kg was worth quite a bit more than 20 seconds.

exponentially more.

love to know real data. it would be interesting.

A mechanical in Arenberg, having to ride on a team mate's bike, a crash in the pursuit, still able to get into the lead group after bridging for more than 40 kms and after that he bonked. He probably would have followed Gilbert without the mechanical, so not really the guy on the bike disappointing, but rather the bike.
That's why I was hesitating, but it was a spectacular bonk; if it was only fatigue, I would have expected him to be dropped like Sagan was.

Shame we don’t have many other stages to compare it too from different years.

It was spectacular, but so was his chase. He had a mechanical, had to wait for a teammate to catch up and give his bike, had to chase, catch the main group, change bikes again (now 'his' replacement bike), had to start chasing again, crashed in the chase, had to start over chasing, got held up by team cars and do some cyclocross in order to overtake teamcars, continue his chase, and finally, some 50k later i think, he caught the front of the race. It was one of the most impressive chases i've seen, but he paid the price for it.

Nice little roll by Pogacar!
WvA has figured out how to do well on this type of climb.
All of the young guns are showing well this spring (the guy who won the other race is 'cycling young').
