Nice return to competitive pro cycling.

P.S. Dumoulin, van Aert, Dennis, Roglič ... Just ban the TTT.

I think that kind of already happened.

But actually Ineos and DQS could still come close: Ganna, Thomas, Porte, Castroviejo...; Cavagna, Evenepoel, Asgreen, Almeida... - it would be unfair to the other teams, but these three teams against each other in a ttt would actually be cool. Well, Groupama might actually have a word as well, with Küng, Thomas, Scotson, Armirail. I suppose Jumbo would be considered the best, but I guess the result would depend on the day. And don't forget EF... thinking about it... it would be quite an open race!

DQT and IGT could make it interesting. You're also forgetting Lampaert and Cerny. But TJV also still has van Emden and Martin, even Bouwman is a good TTer.

He's just back from a 2nd altitude camp in Livigno. Form is good. Numbers are good, but top form you only find during the race. He's starting to miss the Tour now they're in the mountains.

Seems he really fell back in love with bike racing again. Olympic result won't affect his decision about what he's gonna do after.

Just watched an interview with Tom!

I started following cycling intensively after last Tour after being out of it for several years. And as a Tadej fan, I did not like the frustrated “Pogacar, the mine worker” comment.

BUT how nice is it to see Tom enjoying cycling again! And to hear he will not stop and probably will do the worlds.

I sincerely hope he and Jumbo can work out a good plan for the future so we never have to see a frustrated Dumoulin again. He is an amazing cyclist, he deserves more great cycling moments with joy.

Welcome back cyclist Tom.

Curious what his role will be going forward. TT specialist and mountain dom for Roglic? Appears after Olympic TT that Roglic still might be able to beat Pogacar if things go well, so I would imagine that’s be the target. But is that enough? I know the pressure of too GT man was too much, but is 4th/5th fiddle too little for him?

  1. Roglic is now clear leader
  2. Wout van Aert is the beat all around rider and threat to win any stage and can break the proton on command
  3. Vingegard has filled Tom’s void as #2 GT man
4-6. Kuss, Rohan Dennis, Dumoulin all capable mountain doms and potential stage winners in a GT

I'm all aboard the Vingo Hype Train with all the rest, but is #3 here really true? Despite his injury and other troubles over the last couple of years, Tom is still a Giro winner, Tour runner up, TT world champ, winner of mountain and TT stages in all 3 GTs. When he finished 2nd in the TdF, it was by <2min and still in question to the final mountain day, compared to Vingo's 5+ minutes, locked in from stage 8. And even Tom's 7+ minute deficit from last year when he settled for Dom duties mid-race would have been good for 4th this year. And he's a year younger than Roglic.

Vingo may well finish above TD the next time/if ever they both start a GT together, but I think at this stage it's very premature to put Dumoulin into the Kuus/Dennis/Richie Porte non-leadership role behind anyone except (and even this would be situational) Roglic, who is the only rider in the JV squad with a comparable palmares.

I understand this argument, but Dumo hasn't really done anything out of ordinary GC-wise whilst at TJV. Meanwhile, Vingegaard got 2nd this Tour.
If I were to bet, I'd put some money on giving him co-leadership next years' Giro alongside JV and see how things fare.
I don't think Krushweak has anything left in him besides mountain dom.

Part of what I meant was that he would presumably be choosing to be in the 4-6 group because he has indicated he doesn’t want to fight for GTs, hence my question as to whether that would be enough for him. I know he wants to be the old ITT specialist Tom but that is what I was arguing would by default bump him down into the group of deprioritized 4-6 folks. Agree that should he say, Eff it, im all in and want to go for GTs and see what I’ve got, he’d be above Vingegard IMO.

He's finished a grand total of 3 World Tour stage races since joining the team. If he's put behind him the problems he had in 2019, 2020, he’s a definite contender for future GTs. If he wants to be.

Dumoulin talks so much about "doing his own thing" the chance is practically 0 he aims for a GT again.

I am not sure he'll want to do GTs as a domestique

I agree.

I'm a huge Dumo fan; his 2017 Giro win, over prime Quintana, Nibali and Pinot, showed that he was equal to any GC rider of the 2010s. And I still believe that at his highest level, he's nearly Roglic's equal, if not even ==>more consistent TT, great on long grindy climbs, plenty of grit, better bike handler.

But...Tom better not do any more GTs, even as a dom, if he doesn't want the pressure. Here's my thinking: Given a typical route, he'd be top 5 after an initial ITT, whether prologue or at the end of 6-8 stages. If Roglic orVingegaard falters, then here we go again -- "GT winner Tom Dumoulin is now TJV's leader." What's he going to do? Purposely lose time to avoid the pressure? No way. He'd again be under a spotlight.

Tough spot to be in for such a talented rider.

thing is... what's really there for him besides GTs or GT-doms? and would TJV accept that?

Will be very interesting indeed what will be the role for Dumoulin next year:

For 2021 I guess he will aims for the world (both TT and road race). But for 2022 it's very unclear. Some scenarios possible:

-Jumbo wants to beat Pogacar and thinks it needs full forces (Roglic, Vingegaard, Van Aert, Dumoulin, Kuss, Dennis). This can mean Tom as co-leader or more like van Aert, with his own objectives during the year, but with a support role in the tour.
-Roglic for the Tour, Dumoulin for the Giro (and no tour) and worlds in 2nd part of the season.
-Dumoulin once mentioned he likes to do classics. So, he gets a kind of a van Aeart role in the team. TT's, (hilly) classics and smaller 1 week races in the spring, while helping in the tour.
-No GC at all, and a free role in classics, races of one week, TT's and maybe stage hunting in Giro/Vuelta.
