Valverde didnt have the best of legs. His sprint was pretty meh despite winning in the group, he didn't have what it took to beat Martin today I think.

How was that meh? He obliterated them completely in a headwind sprint.

He should just have gone with Dan Martin, that shouldn't be too hard to have realised.

He almost certainly thought it was crazy to go that early into a headwind and if Martin hadn’t been super strong he’d have been right. Waiting to beat Alaphilippe in a sprint was playing the percentages.

Landa shown finishing with top contenders but did not see him.

Landa was there, finising last in the group behind Latour.

Am I the only one not seeing anything out of the ordinary in the riders using cars to make their way back?

Maybe I wasn't paying attention but it looked pretty status quo from both Sunweb and Astana

I always thought there was a clear distinction between drafting through the cars on your way back to the peloton (commissaires turn blind eye) and following your own team car for a significant period of time, which is detached from the rest of the train (blatant cheating).

Dumoulin did the latter, and probably saved 10-20 seconds as a result.

Hoping for a penalty..
That was so blatant it wasnt even funny.

I mean, yeah, it was clear as day. Not denying it happened.

I used the words "out of the ordinary" and "status quo". I always assumed chasing behind cars, even your own team car, was part of the deal. And frankly, I'm fine with it.

Finally, to compare it to Nibali is ridiculous. The guys today were at least peddling their own bikes...

If he is still not in shape he needs to do it quickly because next week is awfully hard.

Never thought that stage would matter much. Apart from Martin's strong attack there wasn't much to talk about. Drafting gets penalized when they feel like penalizing someone it seems. The cobbles will be much more interesting.I think.

We don't know the effects on time and energy of this stage until the third week. So hard to say if time losses are insignificant.

By the way, the posters who think that GC climbers who skip the Ardennes would be competitive there and that there’s a weak field at those races should watch today’s stage again. GC climbers with no punch are not top favourites for hilly races when up against the actual puncheurs and climber/puncheurs. The guys who compete for those races are in fact the best at punchy climbs and Martin, Valverde, Alaphilippe etc will kill non-punchy climbers when it comes to the anaerobic stuff.

Yes the last two stages were still hard. Porte said yesterday's stage was by far the hardest of the race.

UAE’s season not looking too bad now. Six wins in the last five weeks including Martin’s Tour and Dauphine stages and Ulissi’s Susie’s stage.

Its still remarkable how weak the team they’ve sent to support Martin and Kristoff is though. What they are spending their budget on is a mystery on the same scale as Katusha and Cofidis spending decisions.
