This was not just about the acceleration. Vinge cannot do long efforts like the last 2 years. Thats what a lung injury does to you.

He is riding for 2nd place now.
I'm trying to think what goes through Remco's mind while he's getting beaten by a guy with one lung. Nevermind the rest of the peloton. Basically you need Pogi in the form of his life to take 30 seconds on a mountain stage vs Vingebot with only one functioning lung. He also needs a stronger team and nice chilly weather conditions. That's crazy I must say 😂

I think the situation right now makes things pretty exciting...

today definitely suited Pogi more, and while 40 seconds was more than I think most expected I doubt anyone would have been shocked for Pogi to win and put in ~10-20 seconds and the bonus given the final climb profile.

Tomorrow, stage 19, 20 and 21 will decide the whole thing.

He got like 2 minutes saving 10 watts that's not a very big difference. More useful using Yates to blow up the group before he even attacked.

The only reason it "worked" is cause Vingegaard couldn't respond to the first acceleration
Jorgensen just said he had to take over and pull hard in an attempt to limit pogis initial explosion. He lamented it was limited and Vingo could not get pogis wheel inspite of the effort.

I dont think making the race as hard as possible is the way to go for UAE vs Vingo. They threw a kitchen sink on Wednesday and failed an now realize Vingo's power. If I were Pogs DS the plan would be simple: stick to Jonas wheel and if feeling good attack in the last km to increase the GC gap a bit more. its on Jonas to attack first now, he is losing in the GC.
They’re doing the same what Visma did last year. Making the bad preparation count. The harder the better. He didn’t gained the minute I thought, but it was possible if he went earlier. If he’s feeling good again tomorrow, do it 1 more time. Some flatter stages and get ready to defend the last 3 hard days with a bigger margin.

I dont think any of the top 3 are out of this race yet by the way

Lot of long climbs to go yet with alot of valleys
And with the final TT anything can and will probably happen

I think it's Joeover.

Today was the first real mountain test. It's the end of week 2. This is it. This is where everything should come together.

A lot of us thought Vinge had scored some serious points on Wednesday (myself included) but Pog demolished him today.

Gall broke the climbing record...

Not strange considering it was set on a profile that looked like this

That was a time where mountain stages were still mountain stages and the TTs were long enough.
Everything else was meh about those routes, but those 2 things were good.

Pog surprisingly thermonuclear, today. .. I wasn't sure he had it in him. I was wrong.
There is just no telling yet if that Giro monkey is going to climb on to Pog's back or not, there is still the hardest week of the Tour yet to come; that said, Pog looked WAY better today than I was thinking he might and if he looks the same way tomorrow I'm going to start thinking he can maintain this. He really did look imperious today...

Chapeau for Pogi making tactics up on the fly and the win. Otherwise, "Lazarus" was suffering and Remco could only go into damage limitations mode. Rodriguez has been almost Zubeldia like but hanging on. Would be interesting to see him try something.
Got a feeling Sunday will be a damp squib, but who knows? Covid is still about and there's a week left.
