I think Gilbert needs a team purely built around him. You could probably start a new team up with only Gilbert + neo-pros, and he'd be able to carry it. Hardly see the point of putting him on a team with anyone who wants to do anything in any day race.

Cause he wants good team support... Neo-pros won't do it.

Some suggestion now that Sky could buy him, they certainly have the money for one. I hope they continuing to grow the young talent too...

That would make Sky more exciting by 10x. Actually, they're a good team for the cobbled classics, but still, they would have another dimension. Gerrans had a better season in the Ardennes this year, but he can't beat Gilbert, may as well join him.

I read (in Procycling I think) that one of the reasons Gilbert left FdJ was that he didn't like Remy Di Gregorio. Gilbert otherwise seems a popular guy, so it seems strange that with the choice of almost all Pro-tour teams - he should choose one containing a guy he dislikes.

I guess maybe Di Gregorio will be moving on - or perhaps Gilbert isn't so bothered now he would obviously be the preferred rider?

I was understanding that FDJ couldn"t afford him.

It seems like Gilbert has taken over this thread :p

I wonder what GT rider Sky wants to buy if they already have an offer on Gilbert? Are these guys that loaded with cash? :p

Presumably Sky will be in the market for at least one GC rider. Any ideas who that will be? Options seem pretty limited.

Brajkovic? Gadret? Rodriguez?Kruiswijk?

Cant see sky shelling out for a big name GC guy. THink they are preffering to put their faith in youngsters that may or may not make the grade.

They are much improved on last year.

Sprint wise they seem to have good prospects in Swift and Appo

Classics wise, EBH, Thomas show promise (although weve not seen much of ebh in the classics yet)

And they have youngsters in Kennaugh, Uran, and possibly Langeveld and Henao.

Will really matter who they lose at the end of the season with a fair few riders out of contract. Some are easily replacable, some, if they lose the likes of Hayman will be a bit tougher to replace.

Well if they do get Gilbert he has some backup with him as well that would go a long way to replace Hayman and Gerrans and anyone else who might be leaving.

So Gilbert wants a 3 year contract.

What teams are guaranteed to be funded for that long? Rabo springs to mind as a very stable team, but I don't keep up with the financial news concerning teams , so I don't know how long they have funding for.

Sky surely will run for another three years. Great fudning ( if needed ) and it's concentrating on buying on younger riders now, looking to the future, Henao and Rowe being most obvious so far this season ( tbc ).

Katusha and Astana don't seem to be depentent on a major sponsor with a limited commitment. Katusha could offer excellent support in the classics, and will be on the market for a bankable leader too. Rodriguez would have to say goodbye to the Ardennes though, which would suck.

Well he can carry on coming second in the Ardennes at least.

2nd Liège–Bastogne–Liège 2009
2nd La Flèche Wallonne 2010
2nd Amstel Gold Race 2011
2nd La Flèche Wallonne 2011

To be fair, he did crash/get ganged up on/have his teammates working against him/get screwed over by a neutral service vehicle/get sick. And then somebody stepped on his dog.

Always ready with an excuse, those Purito fans.

Sounds more like Evans to me.

I think bskyb need the sky team because they have been trying to associate themselves strongly with cycling in general.

They have sky rides, sponsor the track team.

And the road team is cheap. For sky money is no obstacle.

I think it could become similar to Rabobank, a wrong running default national team.

BMC are clearly very serious in their efforts to get Gilbert to sign!

Have cash to pay - yes

have a good classic team without an out and out leader - yes

will be around for 3 years or more - yes

gets on well with Cadel - I think so

Has other riders for the hilly classics and Flanders when Gilbert is marked to death so other teams will have to ride - Yes Evans, GVA, Ballen ?, Hinchapie

Would he be the perfect fit maybe not still think Boonen to BMC is a better fit unless Gilbert wants to ride Roubaix.

Greg will not be too pleased about this! :)

Well they have other good riders who can be domestiques so they can co-lead:p Or Greg could pull a Nuyens/Pozatto, winning whilst everyone else is minding Boonen (Phille in this case :p )
