I guess he could win the way Kreuziger did
No way, they would never give Nibali that big of a leeway. Maybe when he's older and less dangerous.

This was on page 4

Didn't look so hot today...Should he be better here if he wants to win the Giro?

He was downright bad, outclimbed by half of his team with whom he trained on Teide. I didn't expect such a meltdown. But let's wait and see next two days what's happening.

Even before the climb Garzelli said he didn't expect Nibali to be with the best today, considering it was a very explosive climb and that he probably did long training sessions on Teide never going above threshold. If he's still bad on stage 4 I will start worrying, but at the moment I think he's fine. He was excellent in Oman and in the few stages of Tirreno that mattered. That base level can't suddenly disappear. Whole different situation compared to 2014 and 2015.

Any reactions about today. Didnt really look good.

Oh, and not training over threshold seems weird to me considering the Giro isn't that far away

Nothing yet. Total silenzio. Slongo said that after TA Nibali was just pedalling for ten days then they went to Teide and worked hard. Could it be that Slongo messed up or he's on track? Mistery. I mean he was good up until MSR included.

Even in CdD in 2014 before his monster Tour, he was actually decent. He wasn't on the level of Contador-Froome obviously at that point, but if I remember correctly, he was very good the 2 first days at least. And there's +1 week from Dauphine -> Tour compared to Trentino -> Giro.

I dont know what to make of it, I desperately wants to see him at the best so we get the best Giro possible. The Fuglsang-captain hype in Denmark lasted 1 day, I dont want it for 21.

cannot imagine bertie or chris looking so poor even after a block of intenstive high-altitude training. something is really weird with nibs. not that i much expect him to be the best climber in the giro... but that's still strange...

Form curves look different for everyone. That said, I don't think this is very encouraging, especially if you look at the field that is riding away from him

It is a mountain between the best climber in the Giro, whoever will be, and Nibs today. I had some sort of expectations in Trentino since everything went well until this week and the start of the Giro is close.

Re: Nibali discussion thread

Even with his Dauphine shape from 2014 he would probably at least get 2nd in this race. Right now there is absolutely no explanation for me. When he started the tour last year I thought that its maybe just a strange buildup since in 2014 he also wasnt that good but as we now know his shape in the first two weeks there was absolutely horrible. And even in last years dauphine he looked better than today (don't forget his epic break with Costa, Valverde and I think Martin and Gallopin)

Still its hard to imagine that he will be so far behind in the giro, but to win the gc he has to be at his very best for 3 weeks and not only for one.

Shefer sounds very confident in the interview.
Perhaps Nibali is holding back and saving some energy for LBL. You'll recall he was kind of spent in LBL 2013 after winning Trentino.

Again, his shape in early spring was too good to suddenly disappear. There's no way of messing it up, no matter how you train.

This! He'll be fine at the Giro, I'm pretty confident about that.

Aru just totally messed up his good winter shape prior to Itzulia.

I don't agree. Aru is simply not that good for one week stage races. He has never performed particularly well in any of them. There's no way of telling if Aru's shape is good before he starts a GT.

Maybe it is a test for the way he should prepare Rio during the Tour? If this works for LBL, he knows what to do in july.

As a Dane I would love to see Fuglsang lead Astana - He seems to be very much in shape

As a Dane, it would be kinda cool, but I don't think I would be able to cope with the nationalistic hype for 3 straight weeks. :(

I have been tracking the odds for the Giro for the last few days, and I can reveal the startling fact that Nibali is not as likely to win as he once was
