Actually I've heard that he's already on his bike since today, on the road not trainer.

Wow. RoboNibali.

8 weeks of training before the Worlds,
Two weeks of stop coming from almost top shape... I bet his current shape is not that bad.

Another update:

A meeting took place at the Squalo's home in Lugano to assess and verify with Vincenzo the path to be taken towards full recovery. Michele Pallini was already there (he's been there yesterday and he'll be there until 18, ed), friend of a lifetime (trusted soigneur and physiotherapist). Today there were also Dr. Emilio Magni, who was in charge with the crisis situation of the Sicilian since the crash on Alpe d'Huez, osteopath Gianluca Carretta and coach Paolo Slongo.

"We did a test on a climb around Mendrisio - explained Paolo Slongo, who returned home in the evening, in Veneto -. Nothing special, but a test that we have done to see where we are and to have a basis on which to evaluate the coming days. How did we find Vincenzo? Good, more serene and thinking forward. He complains of some minor muscular discomfort in the surgery area, but it is nothing to worry about, he too is aware that every day that passes is getting better. Then Carretta took care of him, before and after the bike ride. A first "intervention" on the vertebral facets, which will probably be resumed in a few days. The program? It’s clear that it remains the same: we are working and thinking about Vuelta. But we need to be cautious because the work that needs to be done is so much, we have to evaluate the situation day after day with absolute calm and serenity.

Doctor Emilio Magni was also satisfied about the meeting. "There is moderate optimism.” he explains. Everything is proceeding according to the program. Vincenzo complains about some disturbances to the right hemithorax, but every day is getting better. He also did an almost four hour ride and for the time being, in agreement with Paolo (Slongo, ed), the work is only aimed at doing hours in the saddle, without specific training. Then, every day we see and evaluate the situation.

Thanks. I'm cautiously optimistic he'll make the Vuelta. It's only 15 days away!

Great to hear he's back training! Big respect! Easy start @ La Vuelta and attacking in the last week would be great.

"Yes, I am riding the Vuelta", said Nibali to La Gazzetta dello Sport. "My ticket to Malaga is already booked. On the 22nd August I fly to Spain."

:). Hopefully he is feeling better each day! I have no expectations other than he gains some form for Worlds!

Best possible news for us after the accident. Please, may nothing else happen till Innsbruck so that he can give his 100 % for the title!

“On Friday, I made my first big effort. Three hours with a test to understand my current values,” Nibali said. “I came home dead. My condition is like it would be in January."
"During the test, [the injury] caused me no discomfort. But if I spend a long time in a fixed position, I feel a strong discomfort. It hurts. I’m struggling to rotate my chest to the right, but I hope the situation improves. Even the post-training massage has to be light and indirect.”

How depressing. It's going to be a tough journey to get ready for Innsbruck! Forza Vince!

Nibali has a strong mind, so if there's anyone that can do it, it's him.

A couple of days ago there was an interview on the Gazzetta where he said that last week he was in Sicily and during the training was dropped by his father.
I think in January his shape is far better than this.

"Got dropped by his father" hopefully translates to "picked up from the beach" from Squaloan to Pistolerean

I'm starting to worry for his career.

I think we should just hope he can return to being the same great rider. Putting hopes on him performing at Innsbruck? I think people are being way too optimistic

Well, after the part with his father dropping him, he smiled. Also said he has the same weight as in Le Tour, I wouldn't trust too much the supposedly "January" form. He can say whatever he wants, I'm sure he'll be competitive in Innsbruck.

Obviously he can say whatever he wants, but looks like that the injury is worse than what we knew and they took a very big gamble that could coast him the rest of his career with the surgery.

If i were him i would have waited the three months of stop needed to heal the vertebra without any risk and then focusing on the next season.

Nibali is always a the risk taker :). In November he will be 34. The odds of his ever getting a WCRR course like Innsbruck in what remains of his career is nil. He's Going for it because he is Nibali! Forza Vince!

He also commented about the 2020 olympic course that maybe fate gave him another chance. Whether he make it or not is good to see him so determined.

Winning gold in Tokyo would be his equivalent of Contador winning on the Angliru. Would be a perfect way of ending his career.
