Vincenzo Nibali

As a former Nibaliphile I don’t find his time gaps remotely concerning, nor the performances I've seen (although I didn't see the MTT). Beating Uran by under 5 mins after Sky did their trademark tactical self-destruct to protect golden Bradley. Beating an over the hill Evans by under 6 mins doesn’t by itself terrify me either. I think Nibali from yester year would have won this edition of the Giro by broadly similar margins if it played out the same in terms of retirements, tactics and weather. The podium of Nibali, Uran & Evans includes zero confirmed dopers, despite two having long illustrious careers.

That’s enough rose-tintedness though. I’ve felt the sport has been descending slowly into the dark old days since 2011, with PEDs forming an ever increasing proportion in performance and w/kg values appearing to rise. This wasn’t anywhere near as laughable as the last couple of Vueltas, but it does nothing to dampen suspicions.

Which leads me to Nibali standing up and talking of ethics after his victory. This is the man so ethical he signed for Vino’s team, then turns in a perfomance like his MTT? What’s sauce for the goose (Sky) is sauce for the Shark and if Nibali is going to go out his way to act pious then I’m surprised that there isn’t more (read: any) vegetable matter being thrown his way by this forum. Here is your self proclaimed whiter than white cyclist with suspect history and performance, and yet, as a non-Anglo Saxon he attracts no vitriol. Double standards alive and well here I see.

Fergoose, I don't know why you'd say that thing about Nibali getting a free pass, considering the consensus here regarding Nibali seems to be pretty much exactly the same thing you posted.

Quite simply because it is not accompanied with the self-righteous and rabbid finger waving about an individual portraying themselves as clean with their words, and possibly portraying themselves as something quite different with their legs.

Time and again we read posts about why it is legitimate to be more outspoken against Team Sky, because they put themselves on a pedestal. Yet here is Master Nibali showing a remarkable parallel with both lips and legs and there is near total silence from the gentlemen who had the Sky threads on speed-dial.

I spot a little irony in Sky fans hijacking a Nibali thread to complain that the clinic has a disproportionate focus on Sky. You'll notice that Nibali doesn't have the same staunch defenders who keep an argument going. It's more or less: "Nibali: clean?" "Nope." "OK."

Its libellous to suggest Nibs is a doper. He was obviously up for the Giro, his home Grand Tour. The opposition was ordinary, with a swathe of major names missing (Froome, Porte, Bertie) plus the last two Tour winners pulling out ill (Sir Wiggo, Hesjedal). His Astana team was immaculately prepared, whilst Sir Wiggo and Evans had major mechanicals. The course suited him especially having a mountainous ITT. Several mountain stages that could have been problematic were cancelled. And he has been studying Sir Wiggo, and figured out how to improve his time trialling by 15%

Porte would crush Nibali in a one-weeker, probably not a GT though.

He would crush the guy who beat his senior teammates in his two major one-weekers this year?

Climbing numbers. I don't think it shows any proof of doping by Vincenzo, unless you subscribe to the idea that everyone at the front of the peloton is.

Anybody who dopes stays within the believable physiological limit which is why we don't see superhuman figures anymore.

All we can really use to make educated guesses with now are absurd progressions, out-of-the-ordinary performances, or connections to doctors and such.

Those power meters everybody carries around nowadays are very useful for that. They must know what wattages they cannot exceed for extended periods.

I don't get it, a TTT is the worst way to judge a performance since there are so many other parameters than raw power output.

And besides, Astana, Movistar and Katusha has no real good TT:er.

Wiggins could probably beat Katusha on his own.
have a look at Tour de France wins in the early 2000s and late 90s.

USPS
Telekom
ONCE

ONCE dominated ttts

it WAS a brilliant rule of thumb to assess which teams had internal medical programs, systemic programs.

I'd be surprised if someone like Nibali was busted for good ol' EPO. They have access to the best programs.

Ferrari already said in 2011 to stop using EPO so it's indeed very unlikely.
