To save you all a minute or two:
That Giro TT is an interesting comparison. Similar length to Tuesday, with a (longer, less steep) climb at the end.

From memory, didn’t Roglic stay on the TT bike for the whole thing?

Well he is 40 and has been racing at this level for basically 2 decades against riders from at least 5 different generations (including his own). I'd guess it doesn't because it's likely he has been dropped at different points by random riders from places he's never heard of before. Plus this year (aside from the standard answer some athletes have done of it's 2020) his answer to someone like that would be I'm 40, what exactly are you expecting from me. :)
38,39,40,41 probably should all be the same form tbh. They are all such an outlier

Good God, Jumbo totally murdered that climb. Their tempo for their leader totally nullified attacks & voilà, Roglic is in pole position to retake the lead on Tuesday with a comfortable margin.

If the time trial had taken place earlier, none of this would have even mattered (i.e. Roglic would already have an insurmountable lead, as he did last year). The way Carapaz faded at the end suggests Hugh Carthy might be the biggest rival for Roglic this coming week, but all the major difficulties are done now & next Saturday isn't as hard as Angliru.

Great climb, but it does underscore how pure climbers need to take more time on their GC rivals when they have the opportunity. 10 seconds (for Carapaz) is no where near enough. Now Roglic can exorcize a few demons & do his own Pogacar on Tuesday by retaking the leader jersey after the chrono.

Well, Poels could've been another example.
And maybe at one point Valverde was the random kid dropping riders.

2005 Tour and Lance Armstrong's reaction to Valverde holding his wheel and beating him at Chavenal. Granted he didn't drop Lance, but he definitely surprised him. Of course this also goes back to 2002/2003 when the peloton actually thought Valverde was a sprinter who could climb and when Valverde said in 2002 when pulled from the Vuelta that he was coming back the next year to win it, there were riders asking if that wasn't a bit presumptuous for a sprinter.

I honestly would like breakdowns in splits between the first 6km and final 7km. The first part is where nothing important happens but it might skew these times quite a bit. IIRC, Cobo did the second part faster than Contador in 2008?

The only hope for some entertainment in GC action is Movistar. If Mas is still within range of top spot or at least 3rd, Movistar have the team strength to use those medium mountain stages to attack

FREE SEPP.

Sepp should have been left to fly, there is no drafting on the Angliru, and he could have stolen back bonus seconds.

Perhaps having him near Roglic induces a psychological boost for Primoz, but really, I wish he had been able to win the climb. He would have. And that's a career maker.

Tbh I'm having waaaaaay more questions about Kuss than Carthy. I've been really following the whole season since 2015 and I remember noticing that guy. But freaking Kuss becoming th e best climber in the world after a few Utah or California tops ? I don't even know in which team he was before TJV..

Tbh that Utah was was of the most impressive performances I've ever watched. Yes throw in all the US roads/weak field/altitude caveats you want, and obviously not all the American-based guys make it in Europe, but he certainly looked as likely as anyone to have the engine to adapt to the big leagues.

I guess I'm saying, he didn't come from nowhere.

Yeah, right, but usually Tour of Utah field is not that impressive. Or I must recheck it, I don't remember the whole field!
I'm just saying that he is becoming a monster in TJV, I'm not denying the fact he had some potential back in that time. And yeah, it's some whiny stuff but it's really annoying for the show that he is working for Rogla!

Well yeah, during and after that Tour of Utah there were loads of arguments here about whether he was really as good as he looked, just riding effortlessly away from the field on every stage with climbing. Or if if he was another case of an American who can only produce anything notable in a few home races where he’s in top form and most of the peloton are over there for a nice bit of training. But it was a complete demolition of everyone else and he’s pretty clearly established that he’s good good rather than domestic races in the US good since.

i completely agree that it’s terrible for the race that he’s riding for Roglic. I already knew that I hated the superdomestique as an institution, but I’d never previously considered the full horror of the “reserve superdomestique”. A new role in which the best climber in a GT is not only a domestique, but his job is mostly to just hang around looking ominous and demoralising the opposition while the slightly less super super doms control everything. And he only even gets called on to do anything in extreme situations.

Jumbo signed Kuss and Nielson Powless at the same time for the 2018 season, just as a “see what these Americans can do.” After 2 years they decided to hang onto Kuss and let Powless go to EF. Iirc, the 2 of them were into last-chance territory with the team come the 2019 Vuelta, and it all came right for Kuss at just the right time.

Didn't Powless leave because he didn't fit in with the rather strict "regime" on Jumbo?

Yep, Kuss is too good to be a demestique. It's time to change teams and fight for a GT win. Today it was clear that he was of little help as Roglic was struggling to hold his wheel on steepest ramps (so Kuss had to slow down :p). Sepp would have won this stage methinks.
