Might just be because I'm Danish, and therefore has that focus, but is this a case where, for a guy like Valverde, it hurts a bit more to be dropped by some random kid from Hillerslev (yes, exactly; where?) than if he'd been dropped by someone like Froome?

Hats off to Carthy for a HUGE win. I was expecting more for an Angliru finish, particularly with this route. It was a unique opportunity to take time on Roglic for lesser ITT riders (the rest). Too little, too late.

Kudos to the French Martin, the Irish Martin, and Mas.

I think (without checking) all recent Angliru stages have been short.
Contador's first win in 2008 was over 200km and almost 6 hours.

Nibali, needs to be noted, was attacking like crazy and blew up. Horner likely could've gone in the 42s if he'd gone from start to finish.

I don't really get the surprise at the climbing time.
Short stage + 2020. I honestly thought they'd be closer to 43 minutes after softpedalling yesterday's stage.

I mean post 2008. 2011/2013/2017 the longest was 144k.

The overall is between Roglic and Carapaz. However there are still 3 riders capable of getting that last podium spot.

hmm.

not sure.

roglic should put things away in the ITT.

and wouldn't be surprised if carthy overtakes carapaz

Tbh, where the hell Carthy come from...
Ey? Carthy has been noticeable in quite a lot of mountain stages for a few years now. He's very inconsistent so hasn't been a big threat to date much, but he's also now 26 so getting to the point where he ought to be able to put it together.

Back in 2016 with Caja Rural he was 9th in the Volta a Catalunya, finishing with Froome and Martin on Port-Ainé. He won the Vuelta a Asturais admittedly against a fairly mediocre field. He had a pretty meh first year at the top with Cannondale but he was 8th on Lo Port. He was 5th in Utah in 2018 and 3rd in Colorado, and perhaps most worthy of note, he was 11th in the 2019 Giro d'Italia, as well as winning the queen stage and the GPM in the Tour de Suisse. He's been prominent with attacks or in breaks in the mountains in the Giro and Vuelta for the last 3 years but hasn't been strong enough to make it stick. However, 11th in last year's Giro shows that he has the ability to put it together but he hasn't been able to really manage a consistent enough performance to make him a man talked up for the top end of the GC until now.

Very good job by Roglic but still he has many guys to cover in last week. TT can give him a buffer of 1-1:30 minutes to main rivals. I'm not sure if it's enough, we'll see.

I would love Soler to do well so we can put this "you attack today, you crack tomorrow" narrative to bed forever and ever.

But I'm kinda sure he'll crack and lose the 30 minutes I predicted he would lose today.
Ended up losing only 14...

Today showed the importance of a top quality domestique - Reckon Roglic would lose a minute today without Kuss - Hugh McCarthy is a decent ITTer - He'll do better than most in the top 10.

Congrats to Carthy. It's incredible how inefficient his climbing style was but he still won at the end. Carapaz tried but it wasn't enough to put more time into Roglic, who limited his losses and is one step closer to winning the Vuelta. There is only one more dangerous climb and a TT on tuesday, when he should put over a minute into Carapaz.
He does make one think a little of Fernando Escartín.

I'm sure Kuss has all of them covered.
