But if he does or Pedersen just gets to the points sprint, you'll clamp up and ignore it. And if he rides Vingegaard off his wheel and Ciccone into the sunset on the final climb, it'll only be because he was in the break, and he's actually still not a good rider.

It's exactly what you always used to do with Van Aert when he was absolutely crushing the Tour. And if anything is useless, it's probably listening to a guy who has a negative opinion of a rider and will always use that negative preconception to undermine every performance of said rider 'to balance thing out'.
You can have a negative opinion of a rider and only ever speak out when there's something to criticise him for without being wrong in the points you do raise.

Pedersen going for 20 points. It makes sense. You may say it's not worth it, but you can't say it's tactically meaningless.

Yeah, at first I was baffled why he would put in all that effort for 20 points. But on the other hand, they already messed up two stages he could have won so doing everything to keep the green jersey kinda makes sense I guess.

Surely they're not going to give Ayuso a ton of free time here just in case he gets stronger as the race goes.

I'm sure you're referring to a 2 week old argument while having no idea what I'm talking about. That sounds absolutely plausible.

It's not even like I'm criticizing Pedersen either, I'm just denying it adds much to the race, unless Ciccone is gonna attack midway through the stagy, which i somehow doubt.
Not read the entire thread and the exact history on this dispute.
I'm on delayed signal here and just watched Mads' attack.
To Mads the move adds obviously to the green jersey competition.
But ofc, he adds much more to the race by chilling and playing cards in the gruppetto.

Edit: so ok ticker at vuelta gps stated a sprint just after the buttom of first climb, but gone now ?
OK if not the case, I'll just sit back and indulge to some more Mads'ness..

Vine yesterday said, that he had three goals for this race: win the TTT, win stage 6, and help Almeida to win the Vuelta. Now it's time to achieve the final one.

So going by that, he normally shouldn't have any more personal goals - but who knows, sure. Maybe UAE wants someone up the road anyway.

And Vine is in the break. Its a stronger break today and should be more competitive if they make the final.

Frigo, Quinn and Garcia Pierna seem to be in good shape, but are they really better climbers than those Vine faced yesterday?

There's still Ayuso, of course, and Tejada may have found some legs meanwhile, but all in all, Vine should still be the favorite, I'd think.

Besides, he has had success with this approach before. He is vulnerable to early attacks by guys like Vine though.

Frigo is probably the best climber out of the names you've listed, but the main difference is Ayuso riding for Team Ayuso. Tejada for sure won't be able to compete for the win.

Considering tomorrow is a sprint stage, Mads Pedersen is wasting a lot of energy today. Let's be real, his rivals for the green jersey probably aren't making it to Madrid.

Smart racing from Ayuso. Now he doesn't have to ride for GC, or be a helper for Almeida. 4D chess.
It's very semart to say you're a rider to win GTs and want to be the best in the world, and become like Jay Vine on Stage 7, a rider of consented breaks.

So Bahrain will keep the break now between 4-5 minutes until the Col de l'Espina...

If GC teams would start to ride hard then at the start of the Col de l'Espina, it would still be possible to bring the chase back... DOubt the GC teams will do that (they will most likely wait until the final climb), but it´s not impossible..

His rivals for green might come from the GC as well though. And it's not like he's gonna win the flat sprint tomorrow anyway. Also, tomorrow he can chill all the way to the finish -bar the intermediate ofcourse- I don't think todays effort will have that much of an impact on the final sprint.

it's a 30pt sprint stage only tomorrow, where Mads Pedersen maybe can finish 5th (17pt) or so. So in regards to defending the jersey, going for a 20pt intermediate sprint today absolutely makes sense to me.

I'm just hoping that his spontaneity and the burning of all his matches on a non-sprint stage can encourage his competitors to stay in the race :)
