Don Alejandro finally riding San Remo, after some 10 years I think... Watch out for Moviestar

Any team that puts all its eggs in one basket in MSR are foolish ...esp EQS wt the very strong Kwait who could win from a late attack but imagine GVA, Fabs & Valverde, etc will be alert to this...Sagan is also strong & has a good team ......I am hoping MTN could do some thing with 2 previous winners ...Maybe when no one is looking a Norwegian could fly

Degenkolb. Matthews could do well. Cancellara may get another podium and start complaining as soon as he hits the finish line. Or if it's too hot, too cold or too wet he may not start.

LMAO your quote on Cancellara. Dude wants to be considered an all time great so bad. Just ride your bike!

I'm going with Sagan. But Hey, I'm biased that is my team. Interesting to see Bala Riding though.

So hard to pick this race...

If the finish line is only a kilometre from the base of the descent how can the teams organise in the time? Surely a km is not long enough? Unless one team dominates the descent and goes all out from the bottom.

I like Cav but I'm hoping QS don't put all their eggs in his basket for the sake of the race. Difficult to see any escape making it with that lot chasing them down.
Sure Kwiatkowski must attack on the last descent. If not, they will bring the super domestique Terpstra instead of him for Cav's train. Kwiatkowski himself even did a recon on the course early on.

You can get Valverde @ 100/1 currently. :-O

As an each way bet (i.e. to finish in the top 3) that is amazing. He pretty much always makes the final selection - even if he rarely wins :)

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, Valverde won more often last year than he finished 2nd or 3rd. To say he rarely wins, even with a smiley face, does him a disservice and for some reason annoys the hell out of me! He likely wins more often than his fellow grand tour/stage racing/hilly classic rivals. Okay, I've vented and I feel better now. :)

I am so hoping he wins so I can witness the forum explode and crash.

He managed to lose Strade Bianche when everybody was expecting him to win ,it would be amazing if he can get this, plus the forum reaction will be priceless :D

I'm a big fan of Valverde and would love it for him to win as well. But his recent win to podium ratio is pretty poor in the most prestigious one day races.

I think since his come back his results in classics (including Strade Bianche) and world championships are two wins compared with ten second or third places. Plus another three podiums in the Vuelta!

Hopefully he'll be given a free hand and won't just be riding for Lobato.

You do realize how hard is to even finish on the podium of biggest one-day races! Valverde classics results in last 2-3 seasons are perhaps only bettered by Cancellara. He stands above everyone else

Unless this race is extremely selective that's unlikely here. He simply can't beat the likes of Sagan, Cav, Degenkolb etc.

Kristoff obvious choice. Sagan podium. Cancellara out of top 3 (and yes I know...). But I deeply hope for more interesting race than supposed sprintfest.

I expect him to try something or at least be with any group that tries something on the Poggio. He's almost never anonymous, after all. That said, I don't think it'll work. Think this is one for the sprinters though I'd be happily be proven wrong.

Agreed. Some people only value wins but high placings, particularly podiums, in tough races are important and great results in of themselves.

Team Sky for Milan- San Remo: Bernhard Eisel, Andrew Fenn, Lars Petter Nordhaug, Salvatore Puccio, Luke Rowe, Ian Stannard, Ben Swift and Geraint Thomas

Looks strong on paper, let's see if they can deliver here.

You know your quotes are all mixed up, attributing posts to the wrong people?

I agree completely! However, the discussion was from a betting point of view - from that perspective it's much better to back him to finish in the top 3/4 than to win outright.

He's not even in the top-5 for the last three years. I don't get how anyone can place him above (Canc), Boonen, Gerrans, Purito and Martin.

I guess it depends how highly you value finishing second and third. Personally I think it is a great achievement, but I also understand why people would see it as 'first loser' and something not to be celebrated.

If Valverde wins MSR cycling will be saved for 2015, regardless of what darkness the grand tours may bring. I can't see it happening though. He can't compete with the sprinting specialists.
