Viviani isnt even almost one of the best sprinters in the world, their hilly classics team is really not that good (Kwiatkowski is only average, his shape this years was way worse than 2014), Standard for Paris Roubaix would be a huge surprise, and we still have to wait how Landa will do as a team leader in a gt

Viviani is probably the closest you can get right now in terms of challenging Kittel Cav Greipel Sagan on a flat parcours

Shocking news as Oleg Tinkov reveals his team's 2016 winning scenario

Paris-Nice with Majka. Trofimov 2nd.
Tirreno-Adriatico with Contador.
Milano-Sanremo with Sagan.
Catalunya with Contador.
Flanders with Sagan.
Paris-Roubaix with Sagan.
Pais Vasco with Contador.
Ardennes triple with Kreuziger.
Dauphine with Contador.
Suisse with Majka.
Giro with Majka.
Tour with Contador. Kreuziger 3rd.
Olympic Gold with Contador.
Vuelta with Majka.
World TT with Bodnar.
World Road Race with Sagan.
Lombardia with Zaugg.

 ffs

Kristoff, Degenkolb...

Viviani is consistently able to challenge those 4. Degenkolb - not really (on a flat parcours - much more well-rounded but not as fast on the flat). Kristoff is the other one along with Viviani

Just to supplement the point, Viviani beat Degenkolb on every flat sprint in Dubai, I don't remember them racing together afterwards, but as for Kristoff, he beat Viviani pretty well in de Panne, narrowly in Kuurne, and Viviani wasn't really able to challenge in Plouay and Vattenfall.

Yup. Viviani is a top contender in flat, short, easy courses, but important races are not like that.

Qatar 2016. Wont be short but flat yes, and probably easy depending on the wind, which normally doesn't affect those races too much in February - I don't know the meteorology of the region that much but I expect much of the same in October.

I know that he hasn't been the leader in the P-R that he has done, but has he ever finished top-30?

Although one could also argue that O'Grady did not have an amazing record when he won.

2015: 47th
2014: Injured
2013: 51st
2012: 51st (yes, apparently both years)
2011: 36th
2010: OTL
2009: Didn't enter
2008: 88th

Looking through Stannard's career, apart from his two Omloop wins, his only top 20s in the classics are:

2010:
3rd Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne
2011:
4th Paris–Tours
2013:
6th Milan–San Remo
9th Dwars door Vlaanderen
2014:
16th Strade Bianche

Viviani has 2 world tour wins this year. Is there any reason why he should suddenly be the favorite for the WC and for MSR?
