Re: 2016 Giro d'Italia, Stage 19: Pinerolo - Risoul (162 km

My post expressing the hope that Nibali's performance is looked at closely was removed but it seems i'm not the only person who is expressing some skepticism about his performance.

Tomorrow Nibali can win the race, Chaves is no so consistent for 3 weeks although tomorrow stage isvery good for him as colombian, the ame than today..

Difficult to belive that Kruisjwick could stay tomorrow at his bet level after a crash like that. if he is, he can go for the Giro, if he is not, he will lose the podium or maybe much more.

He had the race won, he didnt need to take risk following Nibali in so difficult descent, to lose a minute, not a big problem...just to follow Valverde group and attack at the end... He showed too condifent by saying he has no weak points, but he has, There are people descending better than him, and he did a mistake to pay.

Stages with Agnello are always very important, what an incredible climb !!... we can remerber when Andy won in Galibier, and how Contador accused Agnello, but tomorrow stage is even harder.

I would say the arrogance would also fall more on his team. YOu had the strongest guy in the race, but one of the weakest teams. The rivals who needs a big time gain had to attack from a distance to salvage any hope to win the Giro. A 28 man break went up the road, and you didn't put a single rider in that break? The man rode about 15 km downhill by himself until another rider came to him. No trace of a single teammate in the neighborhood to help pace just a little bit with setting the pace to close the gap.

Look at Movistar. For the last few years, they have had Quitana and Valverde. They usually have one of the strongest teams in any Grand Tour. Still, when in the mountains, how many times do they have someone in the break as a safety net either to help later with an attack, or to fall back and help with the pace.

I read that Steve said it was a mistake and it was his fault at post race, but his director did him no favors.

Usually this is only discussed in the sub forum the clinic. Not all the time if it's certain riders but best to go to the clinic mate.

How can anyone be happy with this win?
I'm happy, as it turns out I'm a Nibs fan too. :D

Today was a great day for cycling!

tell it to Zaka and Kruijswijk

today was an entertaining day and great race.
never understood the "for cycling" thing

good for cycling, bad for cycling. that has no meaning
It was good for cycling because it included 50-60 kms of action.

SK tomorrow will have another issue to deal with: Confidence on descent...

He may have no fisical injuries, but the confidence on the descent will be problematic tomorrow and now he has to attack, not to defend!! It's sad, but it is what it is, you don't have time to do such a mental recovery on third week.

40 secs is a big gap for a stage like tomorrow, squalo will atack on last descent, but he needs a bridge in the break to help that last climb, that's the only bet for him.

But if I have to choose a horse for tomorrow, it would be EC, not to win the stage, but to keep the MR.

Just go away please, or take this to the clinic. Just enjoy this brilliant cyclist, who gave us an incredible race today...

Uran has 8th locked up basically. Tomorrow it's all about the country.
But the country doesn't pay his wages.

His team annouced the other day they were going after the team classifications. So if he stay with Chaves to help him, it also means he will help with this goal. It will also help in terms of staying up there in the gc. It appears on the outside he has ridden an uninspiring race, so if they serve as motivation for him, then I imagine the team will let him run with it.

Valverde and Nibali could ally tomorrow. Bala's podium and Nibali's winning the overall lie at the end of the same road.

How can Valverde help Nibali if he drops consistently above 2000 meters?
You're right, I wasn't 100% familiar with tomorrow's profile.

Astana and Movi to go all out on the Agnello and isolate Kruijswijk. Then Nibali attacks on the final kilometer of the climb and get a good advantage on the descent before he joins his teammates who were up in front. Kruijswijk chases on his own for the whole 40 kilometers between the top of Agnello and the start of Rissoul and then can't follow Chaves and Valverde who attack on the first kilometers of the mtf and gain 2 minutes on Kruijswijk and almost catch Nibali again who gets a heroic stage win a bit like in La Toussuire in the tdf last year.

So close man

I'm hoping for a Chaves win, but I think Nibali is the clear favorite to win right now.
He has been in good form in the mountain stages barring the Andalo stage (lost little time to Chaves/Kruijswijk in Corvara, struggled in the MTT because of the mechanical). His good descending skills may end up winning him the race, with the massive 30km downhill from La Bonnette. And if he does as well uphill as he did today on Risoul...
Chaves didn't look so strong today at the end, and tomorrow he'll have a target on his back. After today, I think he might not be able to handle the pressure (I hope he proves me wrong, though).
Either way, it should be another great stage tomorrow, with the top 4 within 2 minutes of each other (and not because of everyone arriving within 1 minute of each other every day; everyone's had at least one bad day).

It's such a tough stage though, and at the end of such a hard 9 days or so, that 40 seconds isn't as much as it may seem. When riders get dropped, they'll really pop tomorrow.
