Yates is notoriously known for not liking harder stages.. even without hindsigt, I'd say its always the correct call to play it defensively for the stage unless its obvious that Bernal is having a *** day.

Good stage i think.

A shame that the setup for tomorrow's TT looks pretty boring, very few positions for which there's any real tension and the stage win should also be clear.

Without Martinez Bernal would have had to pace himself more and do more work on the front. It's far from a given that he would have close to the same difference vs the rest.

Ya, if he loses a bit more to Caruso, that possibly puts tomorrow in play since Caruso is generally a better TTist anyway.

If your team says "we don't care about podium we'll try everything to win", then you do nothing to try and win but do ride after those who do to protect your podium, then that's not exactly unfair criticism.

I don't think he was riding to protect his podium. He was at his limit.
