Out of interest, how popular is cycling compared to say football in Colombia? Given that Andrés Escobar was shot for giving away an own goal at the 1994 World Cup, I guess it does mean a lot to some people. Would most people recognise Santiago Botero or Luis Herrera in the street?
I say yes.

Herrera retired long time ago and people still recognizes him. When he was riding he couldn’t give a step without being stopped by people and fans.

the only reason andres escobar was killed was because some colombian cartel had betted on the game. it was a hired kill

cycling is bigger than football, it's more sport for the people. cycling also has a large history. there's been competetive cycling in colombia since 1900

also just check out the people along the roads in city's and finishes. it rasily rivals the tour de france

I also remember an interview with victor hugo pena and jose rujano when riding for unibet. a belgian interviewer asked whether people recognized them in their country. they both started laughing and pena took word and said. you can compare colombia to flanders when it comes to cycling popularity and venezuela to the netherlands.

to give you an indication. somewhere in the 90s a criminal organisation kidnapped herrera and wanted to sell them to farc. but when they went to farc they immediately told them; no way. if we do this we will turn the entire nation against us. herrera was let go...

In the interview Fabio Duarte said that he has a contract for 2011 and 2012 but could not disclose the name of the Italian pro-tour team. But the lady that was interviewing kind of said it at the beginning. The team was Footon-Servetto. Is any other Colombians going to this team? Is this probably the team that was going to merge with a Colombian sponsor for the 2011?

gianetti's team gianetti tried last year to merge with cafe colombia, but colombians only wanted in if they got all rider spots en ds spots as well as gainetti out and only in manager function because of doping past. gianetti of course refused and then tried to get henao, but he didn't have the money to sign henao. now he has with geox. duarte is going there and I think henao and others will follow as well. it is bad news for cafe de colombia to see duarte leave though.

It is bad for Cafe de Colombia if they want to be Continental.

2. Oscar Sevilla (Orgullo Paisa) a 2 seg.
3. José Rujano (Lotería de Boyacá) 4 seg.
4. Alex Cano (Colombia es Pasión) a 11 seg.,
5. Darwin Atapuma (Colombia es Pasion) a 29 seg, SUB 23

Good Lord this masterblaster positioned himself back in the game and he wants everybody to know it passing the finish today 3rd with bonis.

Sevilla will move up to 2nd overall !

Honorable Ryo Hazuki wrote: god I hate sevilla so much he should wait for henao he only thinks of himself, **** him!

Don't Ryo BabyFace has to keep Rujano of his back ... if Henao drops the ball tomorrow, Sevilla has to pick up the glove to counter Rujano, and see that Orgullo Paisa wins this freaky race afterall. This thing is decided after 15 days included the TT on Sunday ... so stay tuned you all, this is not over yet ... and again don't misunderstand all top 3 are going to my heart (as Jose probably moved up to 3rd overal), but it's little different here with these gentleman, here the best man may win and not the patron comprende !

Why are they counted? He's got a contract for 2011, he was one of the 8 riders listed as the "core" of the team that Unzué had (along with Plaza, Gutiérrez, Madrazo, Urán, Amador, Costa and Bruseghin) while sponsorship was still being negotiated. He's on the reserves list for the Vuelta because he's been out injured since early June. Caisse need a good showing in their home tour, and there's no point risking an injured rider if he's not 100%; so he's on the reserves list and they'll see how he goes and if he's up to it. Seems fair to me.

Thanks. I knew cycling was big in Colombia, but not sure on how big. I know baseball is big in Venezuela (bigger then football, and Venezuela has never qualified for the World Cup IIRC), but it appears that cycling trumps them both.

in venezuela football is relatively not a big sport. baseball is and cycling is also but much more in certain regions, like it's HUUGE in Tachira and Carabobo for instance. Zulia as well although largely because Hernan Aleman likes it.

basically the states that border colombia the most there is cycling the most popular

prenub > as already posted

Tomorrow there is a final major Queen climbing stage, Manizales-Alto de Palmas (206 k); With in the final two difficult climbs, the Alto de Minas, and the last climb of the VaC, the Alto de las Palmas, where the finish is on top of the mountain.
And also again a stage of over 200 km, where we had a lot of this VaC what's not usual, that's why a lot of riders normaly contending GC are not in the front like Montana.
Let's see if Henao can withstand the fury of Jose Rujano if he unleashes all his devils. Jose who slowly has taken back 2:30 min and is in shooting range to capture the crown afterall.
And what will his teammate Sevilla do if Henao breaks, and his lovely wife thunders vamos vamos Oscarito ?

 Incidentally, yesterday after 20 seconds penalty charged for Henao. There was something with hanging on to a car stuck in the stage on last Sunday .. maybe knows our honorable Ryo Hazuki more about that ?
