The very man......

Dim, you know about revenue from websites?
I am all for the protest on the 16th - however I am willing not to visit the CN site at all** on the day, as if I am correct, if I keep visiting the site and forums it is logged (or whatever its called) as a 'view'.

Am I correct in that thought? Its just if everyone keeps visiting then it has little effect.

**If the Contador decision is the 16th I may break it.

visiting the forum and not posting will still generate traffic yes.. Not visiting at all wont. Its hard to estimate the difference between visiting and posting traffic wise, just the act of posting brings up multiple php calls. I wont be visiting the forum at all.

I think it's important to emphasize two things for this 'gesture' to have any meaning at all -

1. We need more than just a dozen regulars (hence, adopting the avatar is a visible demonstration of support and intent to take part on Monday, one that will give all of us an idea of how many are prepared to stand up and be counted).

2. Those taking part absolutely must not even open the forum that day - no peeking, no looking who else has posted, no hits at all.

I believe another step we could take is a forum poll asking people if they'd move to escape the ads. Then at least we know concretely the people who'd go with us, the people who are bothered by this, etc.

Then if we move to the alternative we know how many users we'd be starting with.

That's a good idea, but with the coming weekend, there is not much time left. many may not even know there is a poll...

These ad thingys - does it require a contract or is there typically an agreement for term that they will be in place? I'm wondering if FP could be engaged in some sort of re-negotiation which might explain their silence on the issue. Or is it something that they can just uninstall quickly in which case they're being arrogant, daft, or a combination thereof.

We need a forum users union, (I call President!) to represent the rights and interests of all posters (even girls), we will meet at a cyber cafe once every 4 months and after a few years threaten that if our demands are not met that we will get really cross and threaten and set up a breakaway forum of our own.
I see you as the Bruyneel to Steve Hulbert's McQuaid.

Tweet it. Some of CN forum's heaviest users are on there. :)

I think we can all benefit from being able to access helpful articles like this though........

Under the pic was something about 4 tips for joining the "Mile High Club".
Maybe it was about mountainbiking in Colorado?

Just a thought. This stuff about possibly checking the site/posting on the forums if the result of the Contador case comes out on the 16th might be a really bad idea.
Having such a big story, yet nobody checking it, might just be what we need...

I'm not on Twitter or Facebook, and won't ever be. This forum is one of the very few online "places" I visit.

Im no fan of cycling news. But an essential part to any forum is reinforcements. Even if everyone was willing to boycott this, what then?

All new posters will come here.

The counterforum meanwhile would be left with a maximum number of users (pretty much all the ones that join the breakaway) and no real way to bring in new ones.

CN is a news site that comes up with many cycling searches on google. New fans who find the forum through google searches or looking for results or just news or articles, all will be directed to CN forums and not its counterpart.

.

just generally on the ads thing. I think theres more than that worth shouting about. The mods run this place, unpaid and with no thanks, but worse seeminly no communication from FP which puts them in untenable positions at times. The fact that CN make money from this forum and yet the sofware is from the ark. It doesnt cost much to update. If all the mods quit tomorrow because of how they are treated how long would it be before complete chaos was born?

just underestimate the power of twitter, and social messaging.

and certainly dont underestimate the use of good meta tags. For instance google on "cycling forums" do you see cycling news???? Nope..

Also the general cyclo-sphere might be more open to a non commercial cycling forum and willing to put up links etc etc.

Thanks Dim.
That is what I thought - so rather than not posting, for any type of impact people have to refrain from visiting.

Firstly - ya, i am a fan of Cyclingnews.
It is the only site I have bookmarked and has been my source of news since the late 90s. I have no real quibble with news content or with how it has evolved.

However - I owe CN nothing, and it owes me nothing, but Future appear to have little consideration for us, the users.

I think there is a market for a dedicated site, one that is actually owned and run by cyclists. It would be run (and viable) because it would cater for content over outside commercial interest, one of the major reasons that CN has maintained its presence is that up until now there has not been a proper alternative. That could change.

Independence is a big factor. Any traditional publisher-based forum needs to take care that it doesn't alienate its advertisers, on which the print publications are almost wholly dependent.

I'm now beginning to wonder if this is all just a ruse in order to get ACF to stop posting for a day. :p

Seriously though, doing it on a Monday may be asking for trouble because Monday's can typically be a big news day. But I understand that the wheels are in motion already, and if some big story does break then, yeah, refraining from the forum under such circumstances might send the intended message.

I still think every sub-forum will need to be spammed with an announcement thread. No one is going to get sanctioned for doing so (not this time).
Personally, I'm going to bow out for the entire week. (Of course this pretty much guarantees that the LA indictments will come down; Contador will get off, and then turn around and implicate himself, LA and Johan to all their misdeeds. Oh, and Vaughters will announce the new breakaway league.)

Just take a quick peek in the clinic on Tuesday and you will find out if any of the bolded news happened. :D

Also, I believe there are a lot of lurkers out there who keep up on many of the threads even though they may not contribute much that will not be tuning in on Monday.
