Hawthorn well on top. They'll find it difficult to keep that kind of pressure up for the whole game. Swans need to hang in.

Oh my... Yellow bodies all over the place. Since a turnover by (IIRC) Goodes midway 1st, the gap really opened up. Hawthron seems more physical, one "step faster"... Besides Franklins 2 (better say 1 1/2) amazing marks, not much by the Swans.
That´s how I, the Rookie sees it... :)

Getting smashed. Swans need to flood the defence and midfield, make the game scrappy and hope you outrun them in the second half. Hard to comeback from this.

Disappointed for the Swans and for Goodes but gee that was an awesome performance from the Hawks.

They seemed to have learnt from the 2012 GF defeat and their tackling, pressure and intensity in the 1st quarter really set it up for them.

Their mids absolutely smashed it. Swans should have played Bird from the start and put him to tag Mitchell.

Hodge was V good but would have preferred Lewis for the Norm Smith.

And Congrats for players like Hodge,Mitchell,Burgoyne & Rioli for becoming triple premiership players.

what a disappointment, Sydney should be expelled from the league for that pathetic display.

and I was hoping for Langford to get the norm smith.

now the offseason begins. . .cushioned by the NFL season really firing up and of course trade season.

Ready! Just ordered the monthly recurring pass.

If there is still anybody left here, can someone tell me if it´s correct that the Car-Rich game starts at 8.20 am UTC ("cycnews time")? Thus in approx. 11 hours from now? Oh my, will be a short night...

I´ll root for Freo (as I did since I started to watch AFL last summer), Swans, and a 3rd team I will decide over night. Try to watch as much as possible of these three teams.

... and here I come up with some bloody rookie picks vs the line:

Crows 11.5 wins for the home-away-season, I say over
Lions 9.5, under
Carlton 9, over
Coll 10, under
Ess 11.5, over
Freo 15, under
Gee 14, under
GC 11.5, under
GWS 7.5, over
Haw 16, under
Mel 5.5, over
NM 13.5, over
PA 15, under
Rich 11.5, under
StK 4, over
Swans 16, under
WC 11.5, over
WB 5.5, over

Sorry Foxxy have not been watching this thread. Good to see your enthusiasm going strong though.

I don't pay much attention to the pre-season games (no-one really does :p ) so tonight was for me the beginning of the season proper with Carlton v Richmond. Not a bad game to start the season and a good crowd (80 000+) but neither team overly inspiring.

The match only finished an hour ago so I hope you were able to catch it.

Most people are tipping Fremantle and Sydney to have good seasons so you have made some good choices there, your third team should probably be a Melbourne/Victoria based team :) .

Hope you enjoy the season.

Thanks... :)
Well, it went rather bad. I would call it a major blunder, really messed it up... Everything went wrong. 1st I overslept, then I messed up with the AFL-pass, watching the wrong game (a replay of last year between RICH & CAR  )... when I sorted everything out, it was already 4th Qtr in the actual game, and out of reach for Car. So my blunder let me miss the quite good comeback by Rich socring 10 (?) goals in a row... Awesome me! ;)

Have to make sure being awake to not miss/mess-up the Freo and Swans games. ;)
The 3rd team will be either a bad one that can come up this year (like the GWS Giants), or indeed a team from Victoria (either StKilda, which is also bad... I love underdogs sometimes, or North Melbourne, may Essendon :D ).

Freo I became to like instantly last summer. Great team colours, and coz of Hayden Ballantyne. What a name. Must be the most football name ever (outside of all those great german named OLers in the NFL).
Sydney I liked also 1st when seeing them. I like offense (as the NFL guys over here know). Franklin & Goodes really impressed me...

Finally, it seems I always get into hard dope riddled sports (besides American Football & Baseball, Cycling anyway). May because I find boring (& most likely dope-free) sports like deep sea fishing uninteresting.... Essendon seems to be a scandal, while two more from Collingwood where caught...

Whatever, looking forward a great season.

Missed the game yesterday but looking forward to the games on Saturday, specially the Lions vs Pies !

Glad to see that the Australian Network is still showing the games live over here in Asia !

Didn't really go the footy sites but read that Dale Thomas is injured and out for about 5 months. Turning out to be real waste of money.

And Good to see Collingwoood get involved in a scandal. I really hate that smug club..

Wishing successful seasons for Port, North and Sydney and also hoping GC get in to the top 8.

And Essendon to end up at the bottom of the ladder with Collingwood just above them

5 Months? So season basically over for him...
Wonder since I follow the game, how in the world players make it trou 22 games + finals (many of them playing full games trou-out the season, as I found out at the great http://afltables.com/afl/afl_index.html site). Especially that most start pro ball at age 18, compared to NFL at around 21/22, while playing "only" 16 games + post season. I guess the toll the game takes on the players bodies are roughly the same. May "leftover" knows more.

@Asian: Can you see every game in Asia live? I could with the AFL pass. But that is impossible for a human being  , so I decided to try to watch "only" 3 games per week.

They show about 5 games live per week. 3 on Saturday and two on Sunday.

I too usually watch about three of them.

That AFL tables site is a great one indeed ! specially to get a good knowledge on the stats (even historically) as there are detailed records from 1973 !

Regarding the players fitness, i believe you should jolly well know how they stay fit over the whole season ;)

It's also true that many 18/19 yr old kids face difficulties when playing their first couple of seasons.

You'll find that most young players play their first couple of seasons in less demanding positions'

Midfielders starting on a Half back or Half Forward Line, Key Forwards or Backs in the pockets or on a Flank, where they are less likely to be exposed.

Later when there body gets stronger after a couple of pre season, you can see them switch to more demanding positions like Inside Midfielder or Key Forward/Back.

Great game. Brutal collisions*, awesome angled kicks, one sensational assist for a short goal, and a true upset...
Wonder how the bookies set the line at only 5.5 wins for MEL.
I liked Lumumba for MEL, while I expected more from Ablett jnr than handing the ball to MEL for easy goals ;) ... Kidding aside, he came to life in the 4th with two great moves that led to goals that almost closed the gap before MEL run away for good in the end... Now off to the Swans game... even though I may only be able for the 1st Qtr to stay alive

* Especially the one from Shaw that leveled the MEL player early. It was like Schumacher in 1982 soccer WC, literally. Only that MEL is no french pussies, who cried out for 10+ years. LOL. True footballers can take a hit or two. :D

Edit: Am I in the wrong game again? ;) What a downer compared to the last game of MEL vs GC. Premiership co-favourites Swans score 1 single point in the 1st Qtr. One. At home. And its not looking like they would score one (goal) later, since they spend most of the time in their half of the field. Smells like upset No 2...

It's been wet and raining in Sydney and the swans have a tall forward line. Rain usually punishes tall and skilful sides and brings the opposition more into the game

Still early days though.

Edit: Melbourne vs Suns was a good game though. Lumumba is a good player who I liked when he was at Collingwood but he knows how to make enemies  .

Great comeback by the Swans.

Contrary to perception the Swans are a poor wet weather side and ofc sluggish starters.

They really lack that good small crumbing forward.

No sympathy for the Bombers. They are my least favourite side..

Awesome me! ... I went to bed short after Halftime, when ESS extended the lead to 50-someting to 10-something... Blunder No 2 in 3 games. What a success rate. Must have been one of the bigger comebacks in the past years, and I could have seen it live. Omg!

Oh my... This must be the craziest, wildest, bloodiest game on earth. Flying bodies everywhere, brutal collisions... and some of the injured/concussed even head back into the game (like the one team-mate Franklin took out) And I thought I saw it all in approx 1.000 NFL games I witnessed...

Just watched the rest of the game I missed between Swans and ESS (in replay; great AFL-pass option for guys who fall asleep on the other side of the earth ;) ). In no way was I ever thinking they (Swans) could come back. Already thought I picked the wrong team to follow closely trou-out the season. 40+ points down with just over one Qtr left. No way... And then, wow, they did it. I would not believe it, if I didn´t just saw it, not after that "no showing up" for 2 1/2 quarters. I am amazed.

OK, need more of this now. :) Even looking forward the StKilda-GWS game...
