Depends on the number of helpers there are left. I still remember Basso smoking Simoni on a easy climb (easy as in 3-4%)

That was Basso in his Robobasso time right ;)

I prefer him to finish 5th but riding for the win than riding defensively to secure 2nd. 2nd means nothing for a guy like Berti. And thats what I like about him

2nd always means more than 5th. And by the way there is still something in between a suicide attack and riding defensively.

At least finishing second shows you were kinda great. 10th is for the Mollemas and Talanskys of this world, it's not where a champion like Alberto should be.

lol to pick two riders who may have the potential to win many GTs in their own right..

Still the point stands. He couldnt gap Simoni on the 2nd last climb which was the hard one, but he wore him out on the flattish climb. Oh and its not like good old Simoni was a boyscout either but lets not talk clinic in here.

Sadly the Fuenta stage has no tough mountains earlier where u can get rid of the helpers.

I'm sorry? I respect them a lot but at this point top 10 is the highest possible for them.

Well Talansky has real possibilities IMO...progressing nicely that one :)

Ye but so did Gesink. Point is its not fair for the young riders to call them future GT winners. Let them develop and see where they end up without way to much pressure

No her point stands. ;)

Basso was ridiculously superior to Simoni on almost every climb in the Giro. Maybe he didn't want to do a 45km solo, or wanted to earn some more money by selling the stage.

One of the things all of you are missing, Contador has no team but Majka on climbs. Unfortunatelly he can't count with Sky helpers because Froome is in bad condition.

I can see Alberto cracking very hard at some point.

I don't think so but Purito is looking unbeatable and in the form of his life and showing great confidence. I just wish Contador would try sprinting in the drops instead of from the hoods. I think he'd be able to generate more power that way.

I think Alberto is waiting for long-term results. Alberto knows that the best way to hurt Purito is to put the highest pace possible. Possibly this strategy isn´t the most efficient for tomorrow, but it´ll work for Cuitu...and La Bola. Alberto will move the race to the agonistic...and in this situation, he is much better than Purito.

Be calm...on Monday we´ll see Alberto as Curro Jiménez.

I think it's a good point. If Froome and Sky were riding better it would have helped Contador a lot more with forcing the pace and putting Ridriguez under more pressure further from the finish. But if Rodriguez has Contador in sight at the moment he knows he can outsprint him and it gives him the encouragement to chase him down like yesterday's stage.

If they were mano a mano and Berti put a gap on Purito I think hé would have an easier time sustaing it at current form if it was a flatter climb. And even better so if there was wind. Problem is the Purito will have Moreno

Exactly, they need to try and drop Moreno. Best thing they can do is put an insane pace of 1-2 km with majka. Normally that should do the trick.

Maybe he can crack Purito on stage 20 where they go beyond 2000 meter altitude.

Purito didn't fare too well on Bola in 2010, but it will be difficult for Bertie if he's still behind, at that point.

That's the problem when Bertie selects his teammates based on friendship rather than ability.
Next year shouldn't be a problem with Roche and Kreuziger on board.
Navarro has been off colour.

say what you want to say, but IMO this levelled out, blow by blow fight with JROD is more fun to watch than 2009 and 2011 processions. if he progresses to his old level, it means effectively that competition as such becomes eliminated. there was not a single second in 2009 TDF or last year's giro that his victory was up in the air. it's better this way.

speculatively, therefore, i hope his form is cemented on a similar level next year so that there is no guarantee that bertie will drop everyone everywhere and everywhen. the repercussions of there obtaining such a guaranteed "champion" in 1999-2005 are discussed in the clinic as we speak.

hoping that andy re-emerges from his schizoid cocky / here comes a regular -mode for the next year.

yeah, the stages of this vuelta are basically uphill sprints. if AC repeatedly went from 4k to go with a guarantee that no one is coming back, it would be doubly as boring. that said, many riders attempting long range attacks would, of course, be ideal.

it is my prediction that JRod will get dropped on the Bola, unfortunately. but still there will be something like 20 seconds between the two in the end. we'll see. i guess all my predictions go astray anyway. :D

I disagree so much it's not even funny.

By the way you hope Andy becomes his 2009/2010 self again, and yet you also hope Alberto stays this bad, well then you are actually hoping for Andy to put a minute into Alberto on every climb.

I don't know, he finished less than 30s behind mosquera who left it all on the road.

Fortunately for contador Andy would spend the first mountain stages;as always, marking contador, and would only realize his potential to put time into contador on the second last alpine stage.

I think the steep parts of Bola del Mundo will help Purito immensely.

Hm... Maybe...
