Being Vegetarian

I agree that it's quite difficult to be healthy when one eats too much red meat. I think eating a more vegetarian diet can help boost one's energy level so one can cycle with greater ease.

re:

I just cannot be a vegetarian.... Its a good and healthier way for fitness but the fact of myself being in it is just hard. I cant stop eating non-vegetarian foods...

Is it not silly to identify oneself with what is eaten? You are not what you eat . . . you just are. . . . therefore eat whatever you wish without judgment.

The may faces of "us" vs. "them" thing serves no one but the unconscious mind. It stops when we consciously decide it stops.

Eat, drink and be Merry :)

I'm mostly veg, but I've found that I've been eating much more fish the last couple of years (where I now live). I've been mostly veg for so long that I have no idea what it has done for me. My problem is rice, cakes and beer are vegetarian, so I've got an extra 10 lbs to pull up the hills compared to where I should be.

Are you a vegetarian? Or have you ever been one? How do you feel it affected your training and athletic performance?

When I was a kid, I was a vegetarian and I can say that I am very health that time, my GI system is so normal, my breathing is normal and I can feel that my body is so lite. Not like now, I eat a lot of meat, drinks beer and smokes cigarette.
I want to be like before, to have an athletic body and performance.

Being a vegetarian is so good because I don't have to burn my fats like now, I want to be like before. Do you guys know an activity, an exercise or any suggestions that could make me like before and can make me lessen my cravings for meats.

I was a vegetarian when I was a kid. But when I tasted meat I become addicted to it, Now I am looking for a way to stop or to minimize eating meat.

I really feel heavy now. I can't run fast and anything.
Being a vegetarian is much better than eating meat and taking vitamins. You body is so lite. :):)

I am also a vegitarian, and indeed it can also be an unhealthy lifestyle if you do not balance your food intake. I only began road cycling seriously in June of this year, and altered my diet. Now i try to balance equal portions of lean proteans, low glycemic carbs in the form of fresh fruits and vegi's, and healthy fats, like omega 3, 6, and 9. I have eliminated gluten products, wheat, pasta, bread, potatoes, and other starchy foods. since June i have lost 33 pounds and feel better than I have in years, and my strength and endurance have also increased.

I was a vegetarian for about 1 week 9 years ago. After that week was up, I went vegan. That was April 2001 and over 170 000km cycled since as a vegan. Being a high carb, high calorie, low fat eat'n vegan keeps you in tip top shape for power to weight sports like cycling. I stay pro lean all year round by feasting on top shelf healthy vegan nosh each meal.

I put my blood tests up on youtube often.

Zinc
b12
Iron
Hemoglobin
Testosterone
Alt
Calcium
Potassium
Sodium
Hematocrit
Protein

Each test comes back 'textbook' according to the Doctors. Ive spoken with Dr Ferrari over email and he is saying 'well looks like its working for you..'

Every plant food contains all 8 essential amino acids.
Osteoporosis is caused from eating too much meat and diary.
Cancer and heart disease risk is reduced massively on a healthy vegan diet.

I had chronic fatigue as a meat eater and now Im racing Cat 1 on the road bike, running marathons, ultra marathons, have cycle toured all over the world and finished 8 24hr solo xc races with 2 wins and 2 2nd places. Oh yeah I rode PBP in 51:30. Just off the all time Australian record.

I find it comical when people that cant even keep up with me on the climbs talk trash about a vegan diet. :)

Check out my youtube vids training with Lance/Oscar and co.

How long did it take you going from eating meat to being vegan and your body adjusted to ibeing on a vegan diet? You're racing at a higher level then me, so it must be working (check the last page of bike you are riding thread).

Sure a low fat, high carb, high calorie vegan diet helps me race in Cat 1 but we still gotta do the training/racing to get there.

I felt better overnight when I ditched the animal products as I had more carbs in my system for glycogen restoration. More glycogen means faster recovery. My stomach was flatter which meant extra diaphragm expansion, my bowels worked better which meant I wasnt hauling extra crap up mountains and my lungs worked cleaner as they were not gooped up by the casein proteins found in dairy products. (Casein is found in wood glue.)

Visit http://www.organicathlete.org for free ebook on menu planners etc. Lots of peeps go vegan but dont know what to eat so they just live on lettuce and wonder they feel stodge. Carbs are king and a high carb, low fat vegan diet gives us the most digestive capacity to get those carb in without mixing with rotten meats/eggs/dairy etc. A good experiement to do is put our normal diet in a plastic bag and shake it up and keep it in a warm, dark place for 12-24hours..that will tell us a lot about our quality of diet.

Meat sitting in the gut takes a lot of energy that could be used for muscular and mental function.

Here is a food pyramid of what a typical vegan eats.

Pam aint no cyclists but is a vegan and still works out hard. Easy on the eye..

I tried for 6 months to abstain from all meat, poultry, and fish. Couldn't seem to give up eggs or cheese. Felt protein deprived and sluggish despite food combining. Hated to attend family barbecues - a grilled artichoke is nice, so is a grilled portobella mushroom, but they will always pale in comparison to a lovely filet mignon.
So, in short, hell no.

ha ha, that's a good woman! or man...can't tell based on your avatar...(?)

I can understand this situation. On a physiological basis, the eggs and cheese are full of fat and protein and will make ones legs feel heavy. Someone might mistake this for 'protein deficiency' but we actually dont even have a word in modern medicine for protein deficiency. Yep thats right. Even things like kwashiorkor and marasmus refer to caloric deficiency rather protein deficiency.

Id be starving if I just ate artichokes and mushrooms! Not enough carbs in that meal! When people cut out animal products they usually eat some low carb vegetable dish out of ignorance. They used to have chicken and rice or steak burger with chips and now they just have mushrooms and artichokes and end up running glycogen deficient as a result of the low carb meal and confuse that glycogen deficiency with other things. All they have to do is have veg with rice, beans with rice, tofu, tempeh, maple syrup and soy milk with rice..salad with rice, pasta, fruit, jam sandwiches, quonia, spelt, kamut noodles, porride etc.

Cut out the animal products for sure but never skimp on carbs! :) Glycogen restoration is key to our health and fitness.

The Human mind is crazy, period. If you doubt this, try to stop your thoughts. That's right, when your mind is rambling, like it does 24/7, try to stop the thoughts. Sounds insane, yes? Yet, we Humans try to do this endlessly every moment of every day for the duration of our lives. To deny this, is to live a fully unconscious life. . . . which is the most painful way to live. Sadly, this is how most of us exist. We try to run from it in our endless human endeavors . . . but we go nowhere as we are caught in the storm of thinking. . . . a storm that can never be out run, out thought, or out done by anything .

The food we eat may be secondary to the reverence we have, or not, for the life it took, and takes ..... to provide us with that very food.

I was thinking, since we are all born crazy, which one increases your craziness?

Speaking for myself ..... refined sweets. Things made with refined flours and sugars (candy, cakes , pie , ice cream etc.) Refined fruits(concentrated fruit juice) are as bad as sugar. These are akin to "socially acceptable" drugs.

if crazy is relative then neither makes you crazy...being born makes us crazy

I will say I stopped eating red meat about 10 years ago, but there's no cure
for madhuman disease now is there?

Thats a great question TC.

If we exclued mad cow, foot and mouth, listeria, ecoli, stiga spores, botulism, benzopyrenes, hetrocyclic amines, bovine aids virus, bovine luekemia virus then all we have is CJD but even that is linked to animal product consumption with the recent cases in the UK. http://www.madcowboy.com

There has been many studies done on violent inmates that were put onto a vegan diet in prison and didnt re offend. To my knowledge there hasnt been a single case of a convicted vegan rapist. How on earth would we know that? Cos when you get locked up, you specify your dietary preference. But a vegan mate of mine thinks its just cos there is such a massive vegan female to vegan male ratio that you get laid more often..

I guess the desperat act of killing and eating the bloody flesh could be considered more 'crazy' than chewing on a stalk of wheat or sitting under an apple tree feasting. I get it comes down to personal definition of the term. For us in a western society where we have endless plant food choices, the action of killing animals to eat and then increase our risk of cancer, heart disease, obesity etc is crazy. For a person stranded on an island with no fruits to eat, maybe not.

Some people ask me if Im nuts but I know Im really bananas. :D
