Isn't Dutchieland home of the tallest (average)?

Surely you don't want to start a thread on the world's tallest cyclists? Because that would be anyone racing a penny farthing.

Some people have hinted at Cav being disadvantaged as a child in this thread. I'm wondering where that comes from because it certainly didn't sound that way from the interview:
Home is a four-bedroom semi-detached(duplex, for us Americans) on the outskirts of Douglas on the Isle of Man. His father, David, works in the IT department of an accountancy firm. His mother, Adele, runs a dancewear and bridal shop.

I don't know anything about the Isle of Man and don't know a lot about Cav past his racing so I'm happy to be straightened out, but that interview certainly didn't paint him in a very good light.

I do believe I read that somewhere as well. Also, they are all fluent in at least 12 languages!!

Only joking (just). But serious question for the guys from Holland.:

1) do you say you are from Holland, or

2)do you say you are from the Netherlands:

3) do you say you are Dutch

No agenda here just interested after reading a Holland/Netherland thing.

Caveat: If this is in any way offensive I apologie in advance for my ignorance, no offence meant.

And for the record I'm Scottish, Scotch a Jock etc...

Not Dutch myself but ... Holland is a part of the Netherlands, though in the current administrative distribution of the country it has been divided up a bit. "Dutch" is the English word for the language rather than the people and, ironically, it originally derives from the Dutch word for German, which is "Duits". Equally, the song "Pass the Dutchie" by Musical Youth is of no help in clarifying the issues raised above because the word has been changed from "Kutchy" which is, I believe, patois for a 'bis pipe.

See how I didn't actually answer your question there? I should be in politics. ;)

Need to put Cav and Armstrong in a room together so they can both re-write history. Just remember the holocaust never happened and the World War II only began when America joined.

I used to think that Cav was a quality rider, but now I'm thinking he's more of an uncultured thug. I was trying to read an interview with him in Cycle Sport America, and couldn't do it because of his swearing in almost every other sentence. Now there was the obscene gesture as part of his victory salute. As far as I'm concerned he is not somebody I would want my daughter to want to emulate, and I will not be following his results any time soon.

Team management of HTC-Columbia has failed on this. They should have sat Cav down and explained the facts of life to him: He is a representative of the sponsors; that is his real job. Cav is too immature and too stupid to figure out on his own that making himself an object of hate reflects badly on the companies that the team relies on for financial support.

Stapleton should yank Cav out of Romandie and force Cav to issue an apology.

"Dutch" is the English word for the language rather than the people and, ironically, it originally derives from the Dutch word for German, which is "Duits".

Holland is one of the administrative divisions of the Netherlands, but because of the financial and economic centres of the country being there at the nation's golden period, for much of the outside world 'Holland' and 'the Netherlands' have become synonymous.

The English word 'Dutch' for de Nederlandse Taal is derived from an old Germanic word meaning 'of the people'. This is the same origin as the German word Deutsch 'German'. 'Low Germans', that is people living in Lower Saxony, Hamburg, Bremen, Schleswig-Holstein and those areas, have their own language, though it is little-used. It's called Low German to English-speakers, but Niederdüütsch in its own language. It is like German but with lots of phonological shifts akin to those in Dutch, and before the Dutch language was codified as 'Nederlands', it is referred to as 'duuts' and other similar terms, from where the term 'Dutch' is derived. As the Dutch language was codified as 'Nederlands', they had no reason to differentiate their 'Dutch' from the 'Deutsch', and so that word came to describe Germans, being the self-description of the Germans.

This is also why, in Yiddish, the word for 'translate' is fartaytshn 'Germanize'.

There are other reflexes of this origin word elsewhere in Germanic territories - the migrant groups who made up the English and all other non-Celtic Brits were made up of the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes, a word with the same origin. Similarly, the peninsula that makes up much of Denmark is called Jutland, reflecting the Scandinavian phonological changes. Also, this is where the Germanic tribe the Teutones got their name, and why we refer to Germanic things as teutonic.

I believe that Cav is very aware of his responsibilities to the sponsors and that this has been widely documented in the media. He very clearly polarises opinions due to his willingness to express his emotions and thoughts, however misguided they may be. All this sanctimonious piety amongst forum posters makes me laugh. I may not agree with him all of the time but he's maybe a once-in-a-generation rider and great for bringing in new interest and talent to the sport.

We need to bring back guys like Djamolidine Abdoujaparov so he ride up and give Cavendish a clip over the ear. What a **** Cav has turned into. He may as well have given the middle finger when he crossed the line, it means the same.

If Theo Bos, or anybody else pushes Cav into the barriers, he shouldn't be fined and suspended, but given a medal.

The zookeeper cannot allow the monkeys to run amuck. Otherwise they wlll eventually fling crap on the people who support the zoo.

HTC-Columbia's management of the situation has been weak. It allowed the situation to fester, seemingly hoping that the problem would resolve itself on its own.

I don't think Bob Stapleton gives a good god damn about what Cav says and does as long as he is winning races. Columbia-HTC has always been all about winning.

So the question is : Can Cav win without Renshaw? Hasn't looked like it this season.

Still the season is young and no doubt he'll win a bunch of races (as long a Renshaw stays healthy ;)), but that doesn't change the fact that he is a class A d!ckhead.

On the occassions that I have to work, I do quite a bit of sales and marketing stuff for mobile phone co in the UK. This kind of thing would play very well with HTC's target market in the UK ie people who dont want an iPhone or Blackberry and want to be a bit different. So someone in their 20s, winning, flciking the Vs with HTC across his chest is the kind of cool advertising money cant buy.

As long as they arent the kind of pleb who thinks cyclists should be run off the road, spat on etc

How Cavendish feels about fat uninformed oafs like this one

from the CN report
The outspoken star let his gestures do the talking as he crossed the line, making an offensive gesture perhaps aimed at his critics before raising both arms in victory.

The reason for the two-fingered salute, Cavendish said, was to "send a message to commentators and journalists who don't know jack **** about cycling," for writing him off.
