If the national champion comes from one of these teams, which I think it will, then the extended playoff format is not that big of a deal. And in the last several championships, the winner has been either the #1 or #2 ranked team. Food for thought.
I think it is big deal. It gave so many teams hope later in the season to play as hard as possible with all the glory still on the table, instead of the chance to going to a meaningless bowl game. And of course it is keeping fan interest. I've followed closer than I have in decades.

I see your point, but the expanded playoffs were mainly to bring in more revenue for the NCAA & the schools that make the playoffs. The television ratings for some of these upcoming games will probably be off the charts. One of the problems I see is the increased risk of injuries to the players with the additional games. You're talking possibly up to 4 games a school would play going from the preliminary round to the championship game vs a max of 2 games under the old 4-team format. Remember these are college kids not NFL players.

Furthermore, with the old format, the only teams that complained for the most part were the # 5 & #6 ranked teams. You never heard coaches from the teams ranked beyond #6 complaining "we should be in the playoffs." And as I mentioned, the national champion was coming from either the #1 or #2 ranked team. This tells us that in most seasons, there's a significant drop off after the #2 rank team. For example, undefeated Michigan, ranked #1 in the final CFP rankings, won the championship last year beating #2 ranked Washington. The year before, #1 ranked Georgia literally destroyed #3 TCU 65-7 in the final!

Playoffs? What kind of nonsense is this? All the higher seeds decisively beat their opponents. The only games that were relatively close was ND-Indiana & Texas-Clemson but ND still won by 10 & Texas by 14! SMU looked like they didn't want to be there in the thrashing by Penn St. I'm watching Ohio St annihilating Tennessee 42-10 still in the 4th quarter. Lol. This is crazy the committee would leave Alabama out & go with SMU & Tennessee that are clearly outclassed. Maybe the quarter final round will be more competitive, entertaining games but this first round has been an utter joke.

The quarters are set!

The idiotic narrative was that the expanded playoff was putting teams in who didn't deserve it. So will they keep squawking now that TEN (SEC) got demolished by THE O (BIG10)?!

HOMER HAT ON: BSU must have a perfect game against PSU. They can't let the moment be too big for them. The O line has to be ANGRY, and give Jeanty room to explode. The D, especially the DBs, will need to have the game of their lives. Madsen (QB) has to play smart, mistake free football with timely runs, check-downs, and several 20 plussers.

Of course it's putting teams in that don't deserve it. Lol. The Tenn-OSU game was absolutely ridiculous (I'm sure the TV ratings were real good? Lol). SMU got their butt kicked. Dabo was outclassed by Texas. And the ND-Indiana wasn't as close as the score indicated. A great opening round of playoffs! Lol.

So, let's see how MW champion Boise St does against the 2nd best team in the Big-10. In the final CFP rankings Penn St is #4 - which would have been the last team to make the playoffs in the old 4-team format (they would have played the #1 ranked team in the semifinals). Boise St's final ranking is #9.

Boise St has the best RB in the nation. However, Penn St has best edge rusher in Abdul Carter, unanimous All-American, and projected top 5 draft pick. They also have several 4-star recruits on D. On offense, they have 4-star Drew Allar at QB & RB Nicholas Singleton, second team All-Big 10, who can catch the ball out of the backfield with vengeance.

Interestingly, both teams lost in close ones to #1 Oregon. So, as you said if Jeanty has a huge game & Madsen plays smart, mistake free football, perhaps they can keep it close - maybe even pull the upset of all-time. But it will be tough playing a top Big-10 team...real tough.

Big blow to Georgia in their upcomimg game vs ND: Carson Beck out with season ending elbow surgery. Beck sustained the injury in the 1st half of the SEC Championship game against Texas. It's now up to RS Soph Gunner Stockton who played the 2nd half of the championship game.

Tough loss for Boise St. They hung in there slugging it out for 3 quarters before Penn St started dominating. Jeanty contained by the Penn St D & had a very rare fumble. Some cheesy calls against Boise St. Penn St running attack with their two rotaters was too much for Boise St. Tyler Warren, the All-American TE, was on fire with 2 TDs. We'll see if can Penn St can find it's way into the championship game.

They didn't have a perfect game.
The O line got pushed around.
The DBs were not good.
Madsen played solid, but when plan A (Jeanty) wasn't working, he sped things up and that threw everything off (still 300+ yards).
Jeanty didn't take over the game (plan A). Kinda crazy when RB1 goes over 100 yards and its an 'off' game!
Too many untimely, costly penalties, and reliable kicker misses two!

PSU had a D game plan and played it to perfection!
13 and 10 moved the O and 44 did the important dirty work.

I don't have ESPN so I'll miss some good football tomorrow.

I don't have ESPN either and ESPN+, which I do have, won't be streaming the Rose Bowl, so I signed up for the Fubo free trial. (I'll be dumping Fubo the second the Rose Bowl is over.)

If you don't have Fubo already the free trial is an option.

Did Oregon slack off on practice & preparation for this game? Lol. Down 34-8 at the half, it'll be tough to come back.

Great game with Texas & ASU. Down to the wire with double OT. But Sark prevails & moves on to the semis. ASU definitely showed that the Big-12 can play with the SEC.

ND-Georgia postponed:

Notre Dame no problem with Georgia. Turnover free football, a dominant running game & solid defense won the day. Georgia clearly missed Carson Beck - one of the top QBs in the nation (he's playing on Sundays). Stockton looked overwhelmed out there. But I think the RS Soph can get better & lead the team next year. The quarterfinals are in the book: It's ND vs Penn St & Texas vs Ohio St (I like OSU at this point).

Costly pick by Allard in the closing minutes of the game. Penn St should have played for OT, IMO. Nice game winning FG by Jeter off the turnover. The Fighting Irish move on to the big one. The last time ND won a national championship was way back in 1988.
