Michigan: I know he's just a young guy in a high pressure situation, but why wouldn't the punter just fall on the ball? Its easy for me to second guess Harb, but I would have run a play, and had my QB run a few circles to kill the clock because long snaps are always a crap shoot.

I agree. I think Harbough made bad call. But being MSU fan....Go Spartans.

Ugh. Twelve losses in a row to the Ducks, at least the final score wasn't completely humiliating. (I quit watching at halftime cause I had a bad feeling.)

And the $280 million improvements to Husky stadium look nice, the wooden bleachers I painted one summer as a student are gone. (One of the worst jobs I've ever had, but the group of fellow students I worked with made it bearable.)

I like Husky HC Chris Peterson an was hoping the Dawgs could pull off a comeback win and they nearly did, even though there were times in the second half when it looked like they were not going to have a chance. Give the Huskies credit for not giving up, coming back, and nearly winning. The biggest blame for the loss has to be on the HC, though for his play calling with 7-1/2 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter and needing 2 TDs to win. He called far too many run plays that took too much time off the clock. Huskies got one TD alright but it left only about 1 to 1-1/2 on game clock, when I thought they would try an onside kick. Ducks lined up expecting the onside, so mistake #2 was the Husks kicked it deep. Then the husky defense just could not get a quick 3-and-out. Game over. The only explanation for the horrible clock management starting at the 7-1/2 minute mark might be a slight injury to Husky starting QBs right arm that might have dictated the heavy dose on run plays during that time. You could see trainers massaging his throwing shoulder on the sideline when the defense was playing, but it was not severe enough to keep the QB off the field. Maybe they should have used the backup QB but don't know what their backup situation is like.

Other than that, I generally like Ducks unis, but on that day the retro Disney Donald Duck head on the helmet looked really terrible. It goes back to their roots a bit, but that is the only positive you can say about it.

I watched some of the Memphis vs. Tulsa game...that was a lot of offense (and not much defense)!

I take it from the plethora of live stories of college football games on my snapchat that college football season is back. I know, I am basically Sherlock Holmes. :p

Anyway:

Being an Italo-Brit, college football isn't one of the things I tend to follow. However, some of my friends are fans, and if they talk about it I understand nothing. So could someone here perhaps give me a quick summary of what it's all about? Just it's format and the favourites for the matches, so I can impress my football fetishing friends :D

Basically in division 1 A college football(the strongest division, also called the FBS), there are I think around 120 or so teams and they are all going for 4 playoff spots(Yeah doesn't make much sense but we just upgraded from 2 spots so progress). There are also 10 conferences, 5 of them being the power 5 conferences(Southeastern Conference(SEC), Atlantic Coastal Conference(ACC), BIG 10(even though it has 14 teams), Big 12(even though it has 10 teams), and Pac 12(they actually have 12 teams)). The other 5 conferences are not nearly as good but there are a couple teams each year from these conferences that can be good enough to upset some of the top teams from the power 5 conferences. You obviously want to win your conference. Some conferences have 2 divisions and the winners will play a championship game after the regular season to determine the final winner of the conference. Others(just the Big 12 among the Power 5 conferences) don't. At the end of the season, teams that have 6 wins or more are eligible to go to a bowl game where they play another team, this is usually what most teams play for if they can't win their conference. The number next to each team is their ranking(they only rank the top 25 teams so if there is not a number there then they are unranked and not part of the top 25), originally the numbers are the AP rankings but after a certain amount of time it shifts to a playoff committee as they are the people who determine who goes to the playoffs and who plays who in the bowl games.

That is the simplified version, it is kinda complex so if you need me to go more in depth in certain areas, just feel free to ask.

I'd recommend just following the weekly rankings and the weekly standings on a Yankee site such as ESPN. http://espn.go.com/college-football/rankings

http://espn.go.com/college-football/standings

Eventually you'll see a pattern - it's usually the SEC, the Big Ten, or the Big 12 conferences that end up doing really well. (Also, inevitably one of these teams from one these conferences will end up winning the National Championship.)

Btw., Brullnux, if you want to appear especially sexy you'll want to argue which conference (SEC, Big 10, Big 12) is the best.

(I'm a Pac-12 kind of lady, so I know how to keep myself out of that big old mess.;))

Lotsa points:
OK State 70
OK 62
Clem 56
TTU 53 (and lost)
FSU 45
Mem 41
TCU 40

Good offense? Bad defense? A little of both?

I'd go with horrible defense.

I mean, there's no way you'd get away with these kinds of high scores if you were playing in the pros.

(Unless they changed the NFL rules again, which happens somewhat often, and which we're expected to keep up with. No worries, though, I think golf's rules book is even thicker and even worse. [Unless Adam Scott finds his putting game without anchoring he'll pretty much be fried as a pro by the time the clock strikes midnight at New Year's. ])

Hmmm... Stanford vs. Oregon. Have a very bad read on that one. (And am aware Stanford is up 10 points on the spreadsheet.)

May actually stay awake for this one.

I like that TCU went for the win, but in that situation it seems like a better bet to kick the extra point and then try to win in overtime. If they would've won, I would be praising them though!

Feck it, the Cougars can have this Apple Cup! (We're not doing so well there, are we, fellow Huskies?)

Ducks by a landslide in the "Civil War", however. (I actually sort of feel sorry for the Beavs. :( )

Do you think Clemson can go all the way?

They have a good shot but I am not entirely sold on them yet. No team really impressing me this year. Everyone is beating each other up, which could make for a really interesting ending to this season.

Hmm... looks like the Huskies may actually win this Apple Cup, unless they find a way to blow it in the last 5 mins of the game. (Don't mean to diss my alma mater, but we frankly haven't won anything of consequence since I graduated over 20 years ago.)

The Ducks game appears to be much more interesting, however - the Beavs are losing by only 17 points in the 3rd? Hmmm....

Come on, Beavs, I'm pulling for ya!
