Giro is always backloaded like that, what will make or break it is if it has a few hard hilly stages in the first two weeks. that Albania stage looks decent and hopefully we get a real Strade Bianche stage this time.
Maybe they can tempt Pogacar back by including Monte Santa Maria on the gravel stage along with the Slovenia stage finish.

You know what stage was similar to that Asiago design?

Crans-Montana 2023. Yes, I know this isn't 80km but that one also didn't have 10km of rolling/flat terrain on top of the climb.

That stage really needs Bocca di Forca into Grappa, and that's also never gonna ever ever ever happen.
Crans-Montana had 25k of valley after CdC, this stage would have only half that after Grappa. That's a pretty meaningful difference.

Also, it isn't very likely that the GC battle will be characterised by Almeida, Thomas and Roglic sucking the will to live out of cycling fans everywhere again next year.

If Pogacar and Vingegaard show up there and there isn't a comedic mismatch like this year they hug it out too
You mean like on the Tourmalet stage in 2023, which is basically the same stage but with an easier main climb and without the flat after the final climb?

Thing is that stage is extremely circumstantial by default, not by exception.

The default on that stage is "why attack on Grappa ever?" and then the default mode is "eh attacking on Foza isn't all that great either".

If Pogacar and Vingegaard show up there and there isn't a comedic mismatch like this year they hug it out too

The stage is fine. I agree that attacks on Grappa are not very likely but that's not because of the stage design. It just comes too early for "all or nothing" attack on Grappa but if we have decent stages to create gaps early on hell may break lose on Grappa. It's also before a rest day.

And yes, every stage having it's biggest climb as penultimate depends on the GC situation. But I'd prefer to have a stage where attacking on the penultimate climb is possible rather than another pointless MTF.

The 2017 stage was good, despite all action only really taking place on and after Foza. I think it will be the same next year.

It was good, yeah. It would be better if they used that side of Grappa. I remember Katusha (?) setting a really high tempo and almost dropped Dumoulin few times but he came back on the flatter sections.
Put "the real" Grappa and Dumoulin doesn't win that Giro imo.

The Monte Grappa from Bassano could see many different things though.
Yet it could either:
1. Destroy the Peloton so only leaders are around afterwards and group 2 dynamics can set in when riders outside the Top 2 or 3 attack
2. A rider who doesn't convince with his climbing legs and is stronger with punch or TT could be isolated and dropped resulting in drama.
3. Both Co leaders of a team make it over the climb, allowing them to run attacks and counter attacks.
4. With the tough gravel stage, 40 to 50 kilometers of TT and likely some nasty rain days beforehand, a potential podium rider outside of the Top 5 may go big.

Also, don't forget satellite riders. Team tactics could be crucial on a stage like this.

From what I see though, is that the mountain stage of the first week really is the one towards Marsia. I know that mostly those stages don't create big gaps, but depending on the duel we see they are entertaining quite often.

2021 San Giacomo #siempregino and Campo Felice
2022 Etna and Blockhaus
2023 meh, Campo Imperatore could be a huge one, but the combination of riders and weather killed everything, at least the organisers tried
2024 Oropa and Prati di Tivo (and the most random MTF on top of Bocca della Selva)

So normally there is a cat 1 test in the first week, or at least a mountain stage with multiple cat 2 climbs, where gaps can get created by just being stronger.

We could plausibly have something similar to the 2011 Tirreno stage (without the circuit in the end, so with the finish at km 213):

yeah i think that 2023 stage would've been a lot different had they done the full stage. they were too fresh and then crans montana had a headwind too. the peloton in general just seemed disinterested in racing that day and i dont think an attack on coeur was realistic with the long valley in between the climbs. you could be right but i think there's a good chance there will be carnage on monte grappa.

The original finale (last 40 km) for the 2015 stage can also be done in a stage under 190 km, so Monte San Vicino (with or without Crispiero) is also an option:

Castelraimondo finish would be stage 8? and then the strade stage the next day. that'll be a great weekend.

And with the main uphill finish of the first half of the race the day before. A good order of stages for Friday-Sunday.

yeah the route is looking really good. with an ITT to start the 2nd week the whole first 10 days are excellent. now we just need some good hard high mountain stages in week 3.

Unmentioned possible good surprises:
  • Vesuvio
  • Some Marche Muri
  • Pradaccio (would be wasted though)
  • San Valentino
  • Neggia
  • Moncenisio

I'm sorry to kill the buzz but afaik they will get to Bormio from the south and finish in town.
That will be, all in all, a disappointing stage. The big mountain stage will be stage 16 (which, btw, does not finish in Torbole)
