I hope some totally unknown guy wins this. Preferably a Netapp guy.

Strangely enough, i have Jan barta on velogames giro..don't know why. Totally unknown could also be gartan bille or olivier kaisen(and kaisen would be tt'er winning il giro as well :p ) :D.

Dear Basso, how have you been then?
are you bad?, fick pretending.
all of these worries you are causing.

So ivan, will we see you grinning?
must be grand always winning.
how proud are you being able
to gather faith from faithful.
all the respect we are giving.
shared strength acquired by believing.

not much happening so..... :D :p

(2nd verse)
Dear Ivan, hows it going so far?
is your diesel engine warming up to fick and smoke the peloton.
Not much worries you are causing now.
the tifosi are waiting for your show
the show for the last hurrah.

(the chorus)
So ivan, will we see you grinning?
must be grand always winning.
how proud are you being able
to gather faith from faithful.
all the respect we are giving.

I gotta say tactically they were strange. They did all the work and looked good and then at 5km Basso instantly got isolated and the attacks began

The Basso Containment Strategy !

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/basso-continues-containment-strategy-at-giro-ditalia

With his comments and the rest day comming up, I suspect we might see a concerted push by Basso on the final climb tommorow where he'll go at 100% for the first time this Giro. Be nice to see how he's going because today didn't really clear anything up :(

I dont know how much that final climb actually suits him, so he may just try to sit in "containment" wise. It is a bit too steep and short for him but undoubtebly he is strong so we will see.

I expected a lot more from Basso. Heck, I said he was going to crush everyone in the last week by the way he was riding.
A disaster (or half disaster) very similar to last year Tour, when during the Pyrenees he was there with the best, yet not shining, and during the Alps he got knocked. Almost like in this Giro.

Gotta say it's quite strange tho: ok he has a certain riding style and a certain way (surely coming from his experiences in CSC and Discovery) to use the team, but he's an extremely expert rider, and I wonder why he used up so much his team (which could've garnered at least a win) while not feeling better than the others. Maybe in the first part of the Giro he didn't know, but in the last part he should've known better.

What will happen now of Basso I wonder. Was this his last song as a GT captain? Maybe his fate is intertwined with Nibali's one, and his choice of his team for 2013.
If we look at his results these past couple of years, there's not much to say. Sure he had some quite nasty falls, but did those falls affected SO MUCH his preparation?
And come on, Basso 2010 would've never lost to Hesjedal or JRod or whoever in this year Giro.

Maybe he/we should just accept this is goodbye. Makes you also wonder how Evans will do in this year Tour.

Whither now Basso and also Liquigas itself? Surely that's the end of him as a GC contender, especially considering last year's TdF and the way he needs a team to 100% commit to him - he's 35 in November, should he retire now or hang around as a team rider? And Liquigas, probably the strongest overall team in the race end up with nothing other than lots of TV time on the front of the bunch - plus they're effectively losing both their twin-headed GC leadership now... should they refocus around being purely Sagan's team now or keep the same course as now but bring Capecchi, Caruso or Agnoli up into the Basso/Nibali role?

He is just getting old, he can not keep being fresh or recovering well in the third week. This is the common problem with old riders. Simply you just can't fight with your age. I can still imagine Basso goes into Giro or Tour for stage hunting but his GC career, i think it is safe to say is over.

How is Caruso's TT ability? I think he has great potential judging by his performance in the mountains.

"One complicating factor with riders who will leave teams is that those squads need world ranking points to ensure they have a WorldTour licence for 2013. As a result Liquigas-Cannondale may prefer to send big riders to the Vuelta who are willing to chase overall success. Nibali won the race in 2010"

Basso may have another chance to prove himself or maybe Caruso will ride for GC too.
