Of course doping pays . If I was a young talented cyclist/athlete. I would dope ,take the cash, take the rewards. I get caught I would apologise" blame life pressure the media expectations" "didn't want to let anyone down" then get a 2 year ban.
I would then spend the next 2 years banned [no testing] dope myself up to the eyeballs " under medical supervision"
Be welcomed back to the peloton saying I am clean and I want to help clean up the sport " carry on doping but be more careful and enjoy the gains I made from my 2 years in exile and carry on as usual driving my Ferrari around my tax haven home in Monaco .
Or not dope in the first place have a high standard of ethics that sport drugs are bad. End up and live like most people do by having a drink and taking recreational drugs [ look at the stats] and work in Poundland(WalMart) for minimum wage.

And yes, we are accusing riders are of the blue in here without reason. I am not saying they are not doping, they probably are but we cannot do that based on BS. That's all. Uran did not come out of nowhere if you are wondering what my comment was about.

JV and Lance have a lot in common, actually. Lot of differences (JV is not evil), but lots of similarities.

I tend to agree. JV is not that far from Lance. Armstrong is at least more straight up, you know you're getting shafted to your face. JV likes to work behind the scenes when sticking the knife in your back.

It reads to me like he spent a lot of time referencing his dad's cancer diagnosis and death in the last few months.

Agreed, but I'm guessing you and I came away with a vastly different impression. For me that part reads, you only live once. I don't think it's his intention for it to read that way.

What I'm seeing is a guy who has made up his mind to dope and this column is a prelude, a preemptive explanation, to the performances that will follow. Obviously I'm speculating.

Look, this guy has spent years near the top, as an athlete and a columnist. He knows what time it is. He's probably looking at guys like Pate and thinking he has that type of talent: the kind required to fly well below the Bio Passport as a domestique and never come close to getting caught. I agree with him. I mean, that's the playing field. Stay within the white lines and you'll be fine.

I remember four or so years back at the Veulta, renowned clean Canadian Svein Tuft towed the field all day and after, Cavandish tweeted words to the effect, nice ride mate. Now, I don't think he really meant, gosh you're a good cyclist. I think he was commending his decision to join the Omertà: "See mate, you don't have to do this the hard way. "

That is reading a lot into it, but nothing would surprise me. There must be some guys who just like to ride/race and figure it beats working as a barista, bike shop employee, spin class instructor. Not everyone is Evelyn Stevens.

I think the only difference between JV and Armstrong is that JV's father is a smart lawyer and JV learnt a lot from him whereas Armstrong got a lot mixed messages and learnt it on the street and never had sound base to learn from, hence he shoots from the hip, whereas JV never pulls out his gun till you've turned your back. Armstrong is not evil, greedy and plenty of others things yes but not evil at least not IMO. Although i say if Armstrong got deep into politics he could easily become evil, same for JV.
