Child 44 (2015) - Very grim and darkly filmed movie based on real life serial killer Andrei Chikatilo from the former USSR, I dozed off a lot because it felt really drawn out. The cast is great (except for Noomi Rapace's shrieking and hysterical portrayal of her character), but being it's filmed so darkly and everyone wears similar clothing it's hard to tell the characters apart. And the ending was so rushed and incredulous that it felt like the filmmakers just wanted to wrap things up ASAP.

There's a much better earlier movie based on the same serial killer called Citizen X (1995), the cast is also great and the pacing is much better. Everyone's Russian accent is shitty just like in Child 44, but at least this movie is a lot more watchable.

Saw a doco on Chikatilo, that was more than enough ! Surprised about Noomi Rapace, usually she is very good in her roles.

Being I was born in and partly grew up in former Czechoslovakia I was shocked to find out there was such a thing as a serial killer in the former Eastern Bloc. That seemed like such a Western thing, or it was Eastern Bloc propaganda that it was a Western thing...

It is Halloween season, so I might be tempted to watch a documentary about Chikatilo. Or maybe not, too grim.

Good movies:
Cabrini..a bio pic about a nun that just wouldn't take no for an answer.

Caddo Lake..trip of a movie deals with different time space continuum.. One scene one of the characters almost meets themselves in a grocery store parking lot when they travel back in time. You go in a half dozen dimensions in the film..a cool scenery, takes place in swampy Louisiana. Executive producer, M. Night Shyamalan

Blood for Dust..a loser traveling salesman who sells heart defibrillators to big industry, goes on a sales call and someone recognizes him from when he worked at another company.. Guy calls his boss and says your salesman is a scumbag..can't get a job..then he takes a really really bad job ..drug smuggler disguised as traveling salesman.. Good movie, really dark

The Substance!!!
I am not into horror or sci-fi, special effects!! Demi Moore will absolutely blow you away in this movie.. Both main actresses are naked often in the film and the effects, makeup and camera, director will blow your mind!! If this movie doesn't win some award for make-up or some special effects then everything is rigged!! Hard to watch, but you can't stop..

Norbit (2007) - Vintage Eddie Murphy in that he plays multiple roles with the aid of some very heavy makeup and special effects, reminded me of the original Coming to America. I think this comedy is more bittersweet than outright funny, it's a bit like Robin Williams' A Merry Friggin' Christmas. The humor isn't for everyone in today's more sensitive society, but I kinda liked some of it.

Btw., I think Thandiwe Newton is a wonderful actress, liked her in Crash (2004) as well.

Dune (2021) hit and miss version of the first half of the novel. Some curious casting and uneven performances don't help. Visually strong as with all Villeneuve movies. It works as a spectacle but could have done a lot more with the material it had to work with. Not too bad and watchable even at 2.5 hours.

The Haunting (1999) - Rewatched only parts of it because the sets are just spectacular and the best part about this otherwise forgettable horror flick. It's one of Liam Neeson's many nadirs, he really did take every role that was offered even back in '99, didn't he? The sets are worth at least a partial rewatch though, so there's that.

Re-watched Gosford Park (2001) - Such a smart and well-crafted murder mystery with a terrific cast, I think the only issue I had was Emily Watson talked so softly and so fast even the subtitles couldn't keep up with her and I don't like to miss any dialogue. But that aside the sets, scenery, and costumes were great, and I liked the subtle jibes they took at the filmmaking industry. (Like Maggie Smith quipping she could never tell the difference between a producer and a director - lol!) It is over two hours long but I think those are two hours well spent.

Some people posting have had personal circumstances that would call for something uplifting, upbeat, funny...
Bytte, Bytte, Baby
is a screwy comedy about 2 women who experience a major snafu when embryos and sperm get accidentally mixed up at fertility clinic. You will smile throughout

Heureux Gagnants
French movie, dark comedy about what can go wrong when you live out the dream of winning the lottery!!Movie done in a cool vignette style and each sub story is as excellent as the previous.. Good ending!!

Knox Goes Away
Michael Keaton super super strange movie, am not really able to process it currently, star studded cast

Fast Charlie
Starring Pierce Brosnan, another good movie from him in just a year.. Great action sequences.. an even darker Matador . Female lead plays a taxidermist w attitude.

Kneecap
Cool Irish movie about a subject you don't typically associate with Ireland, well made film!!

Sympathy for the Devil
Las Vegas based everyone gets blasted movie. Nicholas Cage plays a too close version of Frank Booth( Dennis Hopper) from Blue Velvet. Lots of stuff exploding, burning up and tons of ammo used throughout!!

Wow!!watched Steve McQueen's.. Blitz last night, absolutely great in every way. Amazing sets, costumes, characters and story. I have always enjoyed good films about war when done right!!
Strange unexpected surprise, Paul Weller, a favorite of mine, plays a kind, musically inclined grandfather. The cast is just excellent,
Don't think he can be overused, but Stephen Graham pops up in the movie and plays a sick SOB, that robs from the dead and by use of force has children loot bombed out houses and businesses, spoils of war scumbag, he is convincing.

The Skin I Live In (2011) pretty typical Almodovar fare with his usual obsessions on display. Gender blurring, perverse ideas, mothers and their children and sexuality. This time with an added horror slant re a doctor doing illegal operations. The Dr Frankenstein parallels are obvious whereby anyone can be sacrificed to advance science. Nice performance by Antonio Banderas. entertaining enough for the open minded but not one of Almodovar's best.

https://nypost.com/2024/12/07/busin...-billion-deal-to-merge-with-paramount-global/

Skydance Media may finally win regulatory approval for its $8 billion deal to merge with Paramount Global — but the process could look like something out of “Mission: Impossible.” ... But people close to the situation tell me the stakes could be far broader than that. In short, Skydance — a Hollywood movie studio best known for producing the recent installments of “Mission: Impossible” — will be asked to demonstrate to Team Trump that CBS will become a fair arbiter of news.
https://nypost.com/2024/12/06/busin...esh-hurdles-from-60-minutes-to-the-teamsters/
Paramount Global’s $8 billion merger with Skydance Media faces a slew of fresh hurdles as it looks to gain US regulatory approval — from controversy over a “60 Minutes” interview with Kamala Harris to objections from the Teamsters union, sources told The Post.

The outlook for the mega-deal has grown murkier since Donald Trump won the presidential election, sources say. That’s partly because the president-elect has filed a $10 billion lawsuit claiming Paramount’s CBS network engaged in “voter interference through malicious, deceptive, and substantial news distortion”.

Winter's Bone (2010) The film that launched Jennifer Lawrence's career. Simple story about a teen girl looking for her father who is working for a crime gang. Atmospheric and well acted with an unexpected ending.
John Hawkes is a very fine actor. I've been following his work since "Deadwood," one of the finest telly series ever (if you have a limitless tolerance for salty language).

They made a horror movie about pro cyclists.

An American cycling team trains at a remote European lodge. Teammates start dying mysteriously. Rivals Connor and Greg battle to survive and uncover the cause behind the team's demise.

Amazon wants $5 for a movie only a couple of people have seen and reviewed? Geeeeezzzz...

Judging by the team jerseys it looks like Decathlon AG2R or Novo Nordisk could be starring in this though, so maybe it's worth the price of admission. 🤣

Trapped Inn (2024) - First off, I want my money and two hours of my life back! 🤣

But seriously, my expectations were very low, but being this horror flick supposedly had something to do with pro cycling I caved and gave it a go. Not surprising but it has very little to do with cycling - in the initial scenes the team is supposedly altitude training and in the very first scene it looks like they're riding Specialized bikes. But after that the Specialized disappear and are replaced by bikes that have their logos blacked out, weird. Also, the riders are very quickly killed off and only a few survive for the duration of the movie... this could have easily been any sport team or just any group of young people who go to a cabin and then are killed off one by one like usual in these type of horror flicks.

The dialogue was inane, the acting pretty poor, there was very little cycling and precious little sci-fi, and the movie takes itself way too seriously. (There's no way a run-of-the-mill horror flick should be two hours long, but this movie had such prolonged, artificially dramatic scenes that I ended up laughing.)

All in all save yourself the time and money, the trailer is about the only cycling you will get to see in Trapped Inn.

The reason I didn't spend $5.99 was Matt Rife was in the lead role!!
I am currently afraid to watch Maria..w Angelina JolIe as a famous singer.. And The Apprentice looks haunting bad!!
Running on Empty is a romantic comedy w some screen time to comic Jim Gaffigan..decent

I'm not familiar with Matt Rife, evidently he's a comedian?

He's definitely a pretty boy who could easily model, but his acting is nothing to write home about. Of course, Trapped Inn was such a crap movie with such a crap script and crap directing that maybe he'd do better in a better movie, who knows.
