You know it’s bad when the biggest Cowboys fan Skip Bayless wants Jerry Jones to go be an owner instead of all the other roles. When he is the guy that will defend Tebow and Mayfield too the moon and back.

Speaking of Mayfield, I saw the Browns picked up another backup quarterback.

Wonder why the Browns let Mullens go ? He's a pretty good back up. Seems the Raiders have signed him. Maybe that means that Baker is going nowhere for the moment at least until they get some clarity on the Watson situation. As for Skip, I never understood his loyalty towards Baker and his poison for Wentz and Jimmy G. But then he also said Johnny Manziel was going to be an elite QB and have a great career..................Skip seemed to to turn on Jerry last season and even more so when they went out early in the playoffs. The rumours about Sean Payton going to the Cowboys got him excited though and he was not happy when McCarthy returned.

Who knows what the plan for the Browns are. Maybe they ship him on draft day for low picks depending on how draft goes, maybe he stays in case Watson is suspended, or maybe he is cut. If he is still stuck in Cleveland at start of the season I wouldn’t want to play for them honestly. It’d be funny him going to Steelers if their QB situation doesn’t work out. I wouldn’t even want to be traded I think if I was him, rather be cut and choose where I go instead of being traded for a low pick to maybe a place that you are not interested in. Thinking of the situation, Tampa might be his best bet. Now Brady might not take him under his wing because he always wants to be the guy, but maybe with his older age he does. Even if not, being in the qb room with him while they break down film and any teaching points he says would be invaluable.

In regards to Skip’s loyalty, I think it’s just something he liked and saw and college and he sticks by the player, no matter what. Outside of the job, SAS and Shannon have all stated how loyal he is as a colleague and friend. Heck he is the reason they both got their starts because he defended and vouched for them so heavily like he does Tebow, Baker, and Johnny Football. At least the first two and Brady he will always defend. I don’t remember where the hate came from. Maybe Garoppolo because of everything in NE and who knows with Wentz. Plus his hate on LeBron and OBJ.

Last season was a full on turn though he had been going that way slowly but surely since the ups and downs with Garrett. I can understand his frustration since it’s like Jerry, get your ego out of it and let your personal do their job. Yes those were crazy times for him, and if they had god Payton who knows the schemes and plays he’d draw up. I like McCarthy and think some of the hate is unjustified when his flaws get pointed out but overlooked in other coaches with 1 ring, though his offensive schemes and plans are not close. He reminds me a lot like Bruce Arians and why Skip thinks Jones likes him. He’s a guy you can go out to eat with, drink, kick back, and relax. Then just as much of a spectator like we are during the game. Which is good since let your coordinators do their thing if it is working and supervise everything for weeks. But the indiscipline and mistakes fall on him. He should be getting rid of that. Cowboys will be interesting when Jerry isn’t there.

Or just hire an actual GM. Remember, Jerry is owner, President, and GM. His son may have one of those titles, but it's Jerry. He's in charge of almost everything. Depending on what he lets his coaches do. As he sees it, he built those teams that won the SB all those years ago, so he knows what's best (ignoring that Jimmy Johnson maybe had something to do with it.).

Can't remember the #, but if you don't spend within $30m (??) of the cap the league dings you, just as the do if you're over.

Stafford? They went after Sam too. Didn't do as well.

Some teams have spent big money on free agents and had it blow up in their faces.
Remember the Eagles and their "dream team"? How about the money Washington threw at Albert Haynesworth? I'd say the Rams spent a heap of money, but were still fairly smart with it. They partly mortgaged the future, but got a SB win out of it, which matters far more considering how hard it is to win in this league.

Here's one site to view Cap info:Over the Cap.

Having Whitlock retire, and losing Miller has moved the Rams into a decent spot. They were I think second from the bottom after the SB win. Though 2024 doesn't look good for them. When I looked last they had more dead money, so I'm not sure what happened there.

Sportac is another site that has cap info. So does PFF, but you need a membership to access it.

Stafford, I got my ...fords mixed. The guy who LAR brought in to help them win a Superbowl.

Exactly! Some organizations don't k now how to build. If it happens once here or there, whatever, but when it happens time after time its a problem.

For many recent seasons the Cowboys roster has appeared to be stacked with talent and poorly coached. I don't know whether Jerry Jones does much more than say yes or no on each call but for the most part it was working. They continue to have successes e.g. last year's 1st round pick Micah Parsons who many teams passed on. There was a window where they had Dak Prescott (another big draft success) playing on a low salary in a weak division and they failed to capitalise mainly due to bad coaching I think. You could certainly argue that Jones with his owner's hat on should have fired Garrett a long time before he did. More recently though there have been some more questionable personnel decisions - notably the big contract offered to Zeke Elliott, and maybe the big contract offered to Prescott also (although the Cowboys are hardly alone in taking the safe option of overpaying their QB rather than take their chances elsewhere)

I think that Dak changes out of good calls too often so IMO its not poor coaching (at least on O). He needs to stick with the play more often because he doesn't recognize coverages as well as he thinks he does. I watched one game where he audibled out of every play in the second half.

Money would be my guess. Or, the anticipate trading Mayfield, and getting a different back-up, and some lower picks for him?

My only complaint about Mullens is that he doesn't have the strongest arm, and he's not that great at moving around when he needs to. In an ideal situation he'd still be Garapollo's back-up, and in that system he can drop back, or sit in the shotgun, and throw quick passes 5-15 yards off the line of scrimmage, as long as they aren't hard out's, which require more zip on the ball. But he may do okay in Vegas as a back-up there.

Great, insightul post. Agree completely.

I wanted to comment on Dwayne Haskins passing, but didn't, or couldn't find the words. I always wondered how good he could actually be in a good system that was stabile, and supported him. He obviously didn't have that in Washington, which hasn't been a stabile organization since Doug Williams was their QB. But in Pittsburgh I think he had a real chance, if not to be the starter this year, to grow into a system where he would fit in, and learn and maybe blossom. His work ethic was sometimes questioned, but he couldn't have slacked in Pittsburgh, and I got the feeling he knew that and embraced it. Pittsburgh was probably the very best team to go to, in the very best situation for him. Then this. Just a damned shame he's gone, and at such a young age. Just tragic. :disappointed:

Other teams have to look out, Colts getting better and better in the huge AFC. Can think of 12 teams that could make the playoffs. If all goes well the wild card could need 11-12 wins.

Interesting signing but doesn’t replace Adams for now despite his speed. Big worry will be his injury history and if he can stay healthy, especially if Rodgers starts force feeding him.

We need Brady to write a book or series that tells all and we can find out about all these rumors once and for all. Who knows what Miami would have had to given up to TB and NO for Payton and Brady. Heck with Snyder looking on his way out with even more drama he could buy Washington.

USFL=entertaining enough. I only watched the 1st and 4th quarters because I had other things that had to get done. Considering these aren't top of the heap players and they only had three weeks to get ready, it was OK football. Great first few minutes, great last few minutes.

That's a good question. One would think with his wife being the owner, but staying away from day to day things, he could hold on to that in a sense. But sales of teams in private leagues have been faster than your head can spin at times. Look at how quickly, and relatively easily, Steve Ballmer was able to buy the LA Clippers once the league was done with Donald Sterling (though Ballmer's really deep pockets didn't hurt).

The faster this whole "Tom Brady Almost Went to Miami!!!!!" story can just fade away the better.

Even more so if it started because either he and/or Giselle were spotted in Miami on vacation. I could see him more of an owner instead of coach but before he left NE I always thought it’d be there. Heck he and Peyton should team up and try together.

Didn’t the Bills sale take awhile? I just remember it from Jon Bon Jovi and Trump feuding with Trump lying and spreading the rumor JBJ was going to move the team to Canada making Buffalo citizens upset and boycotting him and the bands music.

Yes lots of ifs buts and maybes but not totally unbelievable................by the way Gage was a good signing for the Bucs, I was hoping the 49ers might have been interested in him. They saw enough of him when they played them.
Maybe they were but Gage said he made his decision when Brady texted him and recruited him to TB.

Watched some USFL - Play is okay, better than I expected. Sound of the play is great, the on-field mics are cool. Disappointed that the crowds have been really, really low so far. I have to wonder if having ever game in Birmingham has a lot to do with that. But if this is what the league needs to do to keep costs down, and survive past one year, so be it (even AAF and XFL2 couldn't get through one single season). That's more important than anything I think.

Love the fact that PI is just 15 yards and an automatic first down, unless the receiver is intentionally tackled, then it's a spot foul. As opposed to the spot yardage penalty that the NFL keeps insisting using on all PI calls.

Too be fair, it’s hard to say what is intentional or not as their players are vastly greater then USFL, especially receivers. Something they absolutely need to look at though is the short pass PI that all teams run.

Well, the rule does say "tackle" the receiver. So I presume that involves using one's arms to wrap their arms around a receiver and bringing him to the ground, or just hammering him with a body block without ever looking at the ball. It seems to me this can't be any more difficult to call than PI is now.
Oh that’s not good for Niners. Every team should be trying to get him and Chiefs could have the advantage from Hill’s trade.
Wonder why he waited so darned long to make this claim, or what precipitated it?

I don't know KC has the $ to grab him without losing someone, making some sort of lower paying, heavy back-loaded deal, or some sort of deal giving up someone they may not want to. They do have two first round picks, but they are at the bottom of R1. But boy, that would sure be ideal for Deebo!

I'm trying to look at other teams, their cap space, what they could give up. Carolina, Houston, Miami and Indy seem to have the most wiggle and cap room. Out of those four teams, I imagine Indy may be the best option, but the Colts have next to nothing left to give up in return. Miami? I'd have to look closer at the situation. The Chargers may have a path too, but the look like a fairly deep team already. It looks like in a few years to come Baltimore may be able to make a big deal work as well. But I don't see them giving up that mid R1 pick when they need OL help more than a top WR right now.

The Jets and Giants both have two high R1 picks, but both are not only rebuilding, but the Giants have no cash right now.

Yes tackling the receiver but that doesn’t help when their arm is grabbed or jersey pulled back. The NFL receiver has a higher guarantee of catching the ball then the USFL one meaning any interference is could stop them from catching the ball. Maybe they can do if the receiver has their hand in the ball it is a spot fall and if they don’t it’s the 15 yard penalty. That way it negates the cheese teams try pulling vs the defender getting more reward and value when they’re beat.

If the defender has to tackle the receiver to get a spot foul, then they’ll just continue doing the hand grabbing etc and the problem still exists and rewards the defender more to do that to stop the receiver from catching the ball and getting a big play.
