Valverde should have won it multiple times but bizarrely he kept skipping AGR to save himself for FW despite both races suiting him so well and having already won FW many times over.
What?? He rode AGR probably more than 10 times and he never saved himself for FW. He just wasn't good enough in positioning himself before those hills and AGR is more suited to powerful classic riders (and not climbers) like Gilbert.

He didn't ride it in his last season (EDIT: he got ill in Catalunya, so he has only ever deliberately skipped it once), he rode Castilla y Leon instead in 2016 as he prepared for the Giro, was stopped by a volcano in 2010. Other than that, he rode it every single time he also rode Liège.
