The Dog Thread

This is unfortunately very true, at our local humane society every dog seems to be 44+ pounds! Nobody apparently wants them, very sad. :(

For practical reasons, and because I'm getting old, I cannot do a big dog because I won't be able to carry it around if need be - I had to do a lot of that with Toby toward the end. So that's why I'm looking for a smaller dog now, even smaller than Toby's 26 pounds.
I had to lift my old 65 lb Lab a lot in her last year, and it was tough (she did lose weight though as she lost muscle). 11 lb Buddy on the other hand, is easy to lift.

I don't know how easy it is for you to get to local shelters, but they usually have more small dogs than they list on their websites because they move so fast. When we found Buddy (looking for another Lab), he had been there for two days, but wasn't on the website (he was owner surrender so he didn't have a waiting period). They put him on the website while we were doing the paperwork (IT people at a different location). :)

Sorry for your loss.

I have a black version of that same dog! She's a bit of an arse herself! It took my wife and I a long time to train that brat from pooping in the house, most of the time she would go outside, but for some reason, about once a month for a few days in a row, she just had to do it in the house. Thankfully her do-dos were fairly hard instead of the runny variety. She only weighs 6 pounds, and she looks at me in such a way I swear she wants to eat me! She's my wife's dog.

We also have a 90-pound Vizsla, which is about 30 pounds larger than other larger ones of the same breed, according to the doc, he's just large all over for his breed. That dog would like nothing better than to lay on me all day...I have things to do for crying out loud! LOL! This dog bonded to me the second he saw me at the pound, and he's been by my side like glue ever since. What's strange is that these dogs are so timid you would never believe they were used in warfare! I guess they would follow their masters into battle, and if the master was attacked the dog would go after the attacker, weird, because they're so seemingly timid, and WW2 they were guard dogs. Hopefully, I'll never find out if this dog would protect me, but just the size of the dog alone scares people when they're at the door. I was shocked that someone lost this dog, it's the best-behaved dog we've ever had in 45 years of having dogs.

If given the order I can snatch as many strays as needed from the barrios of Baja. There seems to be some science to the implied kidnapping request..you tell me approximate size and it's a go!! In Mexico asking for a specific breed is futile!! Love doesn't see color, size or breed on the street!! For all I know the Husky puppies near my house were fathered by some smooth operator Chihuahua!! Near the bus station there is a pack of dogs running around, over the top happy, every size and color, breed as part of the roaming gang!!
San Diego SPCA is good, but it's close to $200 bucks for a dog adoption!!

If they were vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered you know I'd take you up on that offer in a split second!

Checking our local humane society adoption fees run anywhere from $100 to $500... given how much I had spent on Toby's vet bills toward the end this is just a drop in the bucket. (His allergy shots alone were $100 per month, and then all his meds...)

We got our little chap when he was already 8, but we were n't told of course, of all the neglect that he suffered so it took like 2 years to build up some trust. Routines, (which people find boring), not left alone, and his own spaces seemed to have helped.

I have a very promising lead to an adult rescue dog scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, we're doing a meet and greet - I almost feel like an expecting new mother! (Very nervous and stressed, hope it'll work out.)

From the mean streets of Fresno, CA (quite literally) comes our newest canine CN member (and future biggest Nairo Quintana fan), meet Tandy!

I found pet adoption-specific sites so overwhelming with choices that I decided to give Craigslist a shot, and that's where I found a listing for Tandy. The rescue operation I obtained her from found her on a street in Fresno, and after nobody had reclaimed her she was all fixed up and shipped up to Eugene for adoption. The adoption fee was $375, but she's already microchipped, vaccinated, and spayed, so I don't think that's too much. She appears to be a Chihuahua mix of some kind, we'll never know, but she is about 1 year old and weighs about 12 pounds. She is exactly what I was looking for - she's small, she's quiet, she's very observant and intelligent, and very athletic! (I've forgotten what it's like to have a young dog after so many years of tending to 'ole Tobes, it's just such a joy to see a dog being fully mobile and independent.) And she is the sweetest thing ever, she follows me everywhere and sticks to me like velcro!

I was a nervous wreck the night before I had the scheduled meet and greet with Tandy because you just put so much hope and emotion into finding a new dog, so I'm downright elated my first try worked out so well. Thank you all for your support!

And now a word from Tandy:

Hello, fellow canines and fans of canines, apparently I'm supposed to become Nairo Quintana's biggest fan. Small price to pay now that I have a new permanent home where I will be spoiled rotten. :) It's the off-season in RR, and this is a good thing because it'll give me a chance to learn all about cycling. (Not sure my new owner is the best source though because she appears to know squat, so I have a lot of reading up to do here of the CN forum.)

All that said Thanksgiving and the holidays are coming up, so all you fellow canines stay safe! (Me included, I've never experienced the holidays before.)

Paw-fives, Tandy

Welcome home...Tandy!!!

Thank you, guys, I couldn't be happier!

Tandy is such a treasure it's mindboggling how somebody could have just dumped her off on the street. Her original name was Brandy but I think Brandy is kind of common and I don't really like to drink brandy so... Tandy (like a tandem bike)... Brandy, Tandy, close enough. ;)

Congrats on the new member of the household! The name Tandy reminds me of the old electronics firm - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tandy_Electronics
Thank you Rob, we couldn't be happier with Tandy, she is such a joy!

I checked the wiki link, for some reason Tandy rings a bell but personally I'm only familiar with RadioShack cause I occasionally shopped there. There's a blast from the past, I think only us older farts remember what RadioShack was. (Won't be calling our new pup RadioShack though because it's just too long and doesn't flow as well as Tandy. 🤣)

I think this was what I was remembering from the dim and distant past -
https://www.tandyonline.com/about-tandy

Tandy has been the home of electronics since 1973 when the first UK Tandy shop opened to serve the needs of electronics enthusiasts and hobbyists.

A place for all the young nerds who are now billionaires and will one day rule the planet through AI. I knew I should have kept that soldering iron! :)

I guess in the UK you had Tandy while in the States we had RadioShack...my brother is the computer nerd in the family and I remember going to RadioShack with him back in the 80s so he could get some trinkets for his computer building, good times!

Welcome Tandy! I look forward to stories and more pics!
Hello jmd, please say hi to Buddy for me and make sure you give him a tummy rub also! (Cause I really like to cuddle up to my new humans now and I just love tummy rubs.)

This sweater thing confuses me, but it's actually quite cold in my area right now and I don't have much fat or fur. So I guess I'll have to get used to it...

Buddy absolutely refuses to wear anything, but he is pretty furry so he stays warm enough.

Nice sweater! :)
Paws can also be a problem in cold weather - especially if the authorities spray salt and/or chemicals about on the roads.
Several years ago I read a post from (can't remember the city) warning people that if dogs lick the deicer off of their paws it will make them sick and possibly lead to seizurs and even death. Should the city be using something that toxic? When we are walking I pick Buddy up when we are crossing deicer just to be safe.
