Dog breeds must be “rebooted” through careful cross-breeding to save them from ingrained health problems, a leading expert has said.
From French bulldogs with spinal and respiratory issues to cavalier King Charles spaniels with skull malformations and heart problems, many breeds are prone to specific disorders.
Clare Rusbridge, a professor in veterinary neurology at the University of Surrey, said many diseases arose from a complex array of genetic variants, while the gene pool of breeds was often so small that there were simply not enough unaffected individuals to breed from.
“There needs to be an acceptance of allowing new genetic material in,” she said.
I am having dog issues, Max,Golden retriever, sudden face and eye got swollen, infected area on his neck, they suspect ear issues but he is in the vet currently because he ate breakfast and they need to wait until they put him under, will not hold still. The ongoing problem with pure breeds that have serious health problems -

Hope they'll be able to fix up Max ASAP!I am having dog issues, Max,Golden retriever, sudden face and eye got swollen, infected area on his neck, they suspect ear issues but he is in the vet currently because he ate breakfast and they need to wait until they put him under, will not hold still.
Mexico is a population of 130 million, don't know the per capita dog ownership numbers, and don't know for sure but a tiny fraction of all dogs and there are millions are purebred. And things like bones, pork and chicken are common food for dogs.
Not easy stuff. Toby like the rest are always doing their best, don't know anything different, so we have to meet them halfway and do our part. Never owned a Golden retriever before, would again. Max has taught me that he has some pretty basic criteria. Don't think he cares about who but he is in an involuntarily, genetically preprogrammed good time and loving search. Dog gives a thousand times more than he gets and that's hard to believe is possible. Before Max I would have had some deeply skeptical views on dogs as therapy. It's just who ,what he is..did I mention he is not the smallest dog..Hope they'll be able to fix up Max ASAP!
I've been having issues with Toby, at the beginning of the year he started having seizures. At first I thought it's just age and I didn't want to mention it to the vet cause I thought she'd want to run all kinds of expensive tests, but once I told her we were in full agreement that at Toby's age strictly palliative care is the way to go. So, Toby has been on an anti-seizure drug called levetiracetam, it's actually a human drug but they use it on dogs too. Fingers crossed Toby hasn't had any seizures since I started giving him the new drug... I also discussed euthanasia with the vet and I was thinking if Toby doesn't at least remain stable we'll have to say goodbye to him this summer. Tough decision that I absolutely hate having to make, makes me cry just thinking about it.
Max sounds like my neighbor's dog (she's a big, shorthaired German Pointer), apparently she's a terrific hunting dog, but to me she is a wonderfully calm and sweet therapy dog who likes to sit in my lap while completely disregarding her own size, naturally. Toby never was one to offer much therapy... lol!Not easy stuff. Toby like the rest are always doing their best, don't know anything different, so we have to meet them halfway and do our part. I hope Toby reacts to his medicine and maybe you take some so you don't think about it too much.
That's great news! Well, not great for Max because he has to wear the cone of shame for a while, but all in all it sounds like it's something that is easily treatable. So that must be a relief.Update Max had a piece of Orange tree branch in his ear canal. Removed and cleaned up. Head cone!!meds for 14 days. Doctor says he wants to neuter him..and put him under to clean his teeth. All things for another day since I have 3 days before my stitches are out!!
Max is as unhappy as possible about wearing the big plastic cone! They shaved some of his face.. Down but not out!!
Per your permission some pics of the unhappy patient - get well soon Max, don't make me worry about you!Max got initial office walk in at 11am, they couldn't touch his head or ear much because he was uncooperative and not having it. Not his personality. Doctor said if he ate a light breakfast, stay in a cage for further digestion and they would try to drug him enough for the exam after waiting a few hours. They did. Max returned home at 7 pm. So all day at the vet, treatment, 14 days of anti inflammatory meds and a tube of antibiotic cream for 2700 Mexican pesos which is $162 dollars US. Exchange rate is @16.6:1
No worries Max, I've worn the cone of shame so many times before it's not even funny. Hopefully our owners understand why we even have to wear them...
How's Max doing, Unchained?Max taking after his Dad, he weighs 31 kilos, 68 pounds!! Overweight!!
Wow your dog is way better looking than both my dogs!!How's Max doing, Unchained?
That's great, glad to hear Max's infection is clearing up and his appetite has returned, and he has learned how to eat and drink with the cone on!Wow your dog is way better looking than both my dogs!!
Max is doing great, the shaved area that was all infected and had a kind of plasma ooze looking thing going on is almost completely dried up and flaking off. His eye and face are regular, no more swelling. We will stick out the cone and he is not happy about it, but has mastered eating and drinking w it in place.
All day, he is a canine demolition derby, he is all happy and forgetting about his shoulders being 8 inches wider on each side and beefs into everything, dents in every door jambThat's great, glad to hear Max's infection is clearing up and his appetite has returned, and he has learned how to eat and drink with the cone on!
Funny thing about cones - Toby forgets when he's wearing one and then he runs into things with it because the cone is much wider and longer than his own head, so then you can hear him bumping into furniture and doorways and such, it's like yep, here comes Toby! lol. Does Max have the same issue?
Sounds like he's well on his way to recovery, give him a tummy rub for me!All day, he is a canine demolition derby, he is all happy and forgetting about his shoulders being 8 inches wider on each side and beefs into everything, dents in every door jamb
Awwww, what a sweet video. Bunch of wannabe Rubys and Maxes, too!
I like the dogs, the humans in this picture not so much.Good to hear about Toby and what a relief to get a reasonable price for the medicine. Insurance is a must for dog owners even in Europe as companies have no qualms about jacking up the prices.
I see Putin got a couple of Pungsan dogs from Kim whilst in North Korea. (https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/north-koreas-kim-gives-pair-dogs-putin-2024-06-20/ )
They look similar to other hunting dogs in Europe.
