Absolutely an awesome post, do you have any read on the re-entry trajectory will take it?

It has been at least 2 days since Susan has warned us, so we should be good for a little longer. Once the usual lot of Lance fans join in July, I see this thread getting really good (ie banter) before it gets locked.

"A Ferrari Body"--brilliant, unintended irony!!!

From a fairly non-in-depth article about Olympic-caliber athletes, in which the U.S. media's favorite go-to-for-comparison athlete, Lance, was described--without any sense of irony!--under the subheading "A Ferrari Body." (Wow, that was the greatest amount of hyphens I've ever packed into one sentence. & nicely rounded out by two dashes.)

"Lance Armstrong is not only a supreme trainer and competitor, but he also possesses a Ferrari body," [bold emphasis mine] Sparling said. "His aerobic performance—an essential key to endurance performance—is one of the highest ever measured in a cyclist."

When Britney was a Mouseketeer...

Gosh, do you realize Lance's first Tour de France was in 1993?
And if he starts this year - that will be 17years!

That HAS to be the World Record for TdF Longevity?
Is there anyone who has had a LONGER TdF span?

Maybe the ASO should have a Special Ceremony sometime during the Tour.
It would be cool.

Have you forgotten that he retired and didn't compete in the event from 2006-2008? Hincapie's participation at the Tour is greater than Armstrong's.
Isn't Hincapie at 16 Tours?

I am not talking about the number of tours ridden
Joop has that record, but Big George is breathing down his neck.

I am talking about the timespan between first TdF participation and final TdF participation. 17 years. Hopefully Lance can get to 20 years!

Interestingly enough it will also spin in opposite dirrections depending on whether one is in the northern or the southern hemisphere. Fun fact!

Of course Hugh beat me to it...

So...
he looks fat on the bike - especially in time trials - but not of the bike where eye witnesses say he looks in good shape - non riding pictures suggest the same.He may be wearing some kind of cooling vest or some such - maybe not - but the 2 types of images don't gel.Only explanation I can think of is a vest- but who knows.

His form is mostly pretty poor - but a couple of times he seems to have quite reasonable form - ie Flanders - one day on the Gila. All I can suggest is you may be able to get close or on to your physical best at 38 - but maybe not with the exactly the same training pattern you did at 28 - so perhaps hes doing things quite differently and intentionally reducing the intensity of his racing. Hard to believe he's as garbage as he's looked at times - but who knows - maybe he is.

Lack of recon - still plenty of time for that I'd call it a non issue right now.
Lack of motivation? Seems to be haters clutching at straws to me - about the same as a LA fanboy hoping for AC to get busted.
Clinic issues - No-one is going to be anywhere relevant without a clinic - Don't know why we even discuss yes or no?- I think the how and what are the only relevant parts.

I can't see any strong indicators of where he'll be at in july, I'm pretty sure He'll be top 5 or 6 challenging for the podium. He proved last year he's still a damned good rider - even if not number 1 anymore.37- 38 isn't going to change much at all aging wise. I think these 'outside top 20- won't finish' predictions are fanboy wet dreams. It'll probably take issues for AC for him to be beaten, if he was out of the picture LA versus Schleck might make a much more exciting race than the currently more likely AC then the rest by a distance. I somehow doubt radioshack will be riding for anyone but LA unless something goes badly wrong

My take on it - bring on july -
flame away haters:D

I tell ya it's his moneybelt.

I don't disagree except to point out he only finished in the main group at Flanders, and Gila is a far cry from the big time.

Agreed.

Totally agree.

I do think age has something to do with this year (you sure he's not 39?) it looks to me like he is finding it harder and harder to keep motivated to live the lifestyle of a stage racer. Totally agree on the last point Radioshack will be one for all and all for Lance in July.
Most all of your points here are reasonable, but come on dude wild speculation is just a whole lot more fun.:D

If he had kept racing I'd be more likely to agree. But he's on what looks like year 2 of a 3 year comeback, so I doubt it.

Oh I have no doubt he wants to do exactly as you say. It just seems to me that he is kinda running out of motivation. I think if he could see any chinks in Contador's armor he would regain motivation in a hurry, but I think he is seeing the writing on the wall now. That is only my opinion your perception may vary.

+1
He seemed to have the same issue in 05 where he didn't seem to care at Paris-Nice, had a respectable showing at RVV working for Hincapie, and seemed lackluster prior to the Tour. He trained in the Santa Monica mountains (not easy riding, BMC did their camp there this year and DiLuca did some training there the year before, but I digress) while he was hanging out with Sherly Crow, even, randomly doing a Cat 1 crit in Ojai (CA). In short, caught up enjoying the celebrity lifestyle...

Point being, 05 was a far cry from his dominating performance in the 04 Tour or the 99-02 Tours. His attack on the first mountain stage wasn't as violent as before. He didn't win a stage until the TT on the penultimate stage. He did what he needed to do to win, but everybody else seemed to be racing for second place.

While that certainly worked in 05, I just don't think it will work in 2010.

Mate the anti Lance brigade are always posting these shots. The guy has a large diaphragm. This shot 2005...but still another year, another win. But hey let them get a kick out of it.

Any photos not in -50c where he's not wearing 81 layers of clothing?

Almost right except for the F letter; but it's an Un-Fact.
