Sagan did the elbow flick but was there a space for Cav to squeeze by the barrier? Sagan doesn't have to make space for riders coming from behind.

There was space. Check the replay again. Sagan swings to the left, trucks Cav with an elbow and then proceeds to go back to the right. None is forcing Sagan to the right.

Flecha selling out to save Sagan in the Tour. ASO directives much?

Looks like Cav trying to do his best impression of an octopus.

I don't believe for a second that Sagan wanted Cavendish to crash. Manxman took a dangerous line to begin with.

I hardly can imagine any intention of Peter wanting to hurt Mark .... those two seem to get along quite well, and usually do some antics together in the groupetto ....

I'm sure all the whiny brits wanted Cav to be thrown out in '13 as well when he took out Veelers...

You mean when Cav was going straight down the road and Veelers wasn't. Plus the road was curving left.

No room for Cav in that sprint, Sagan should not be penalized at all.
Really? You can say that elbowing someone at 60 km/h doesn't deserve a penalty with a straight face? I think ASO might agree with you for financial reason but there isn't no way that objectively - without any fanboyism, partisanship or vested interest - you can claim that Sagan doesn't deserve a penalty.
He was still holding bars with that right hand. It wasn't elbowing, more like stability correction.
Still bloody dangerous sprinting, and definitely deserving of a penalty.

Doesnt look like a broken shoulder for Cav he's back at the bus and chatting with Sagan.

That's good to know.
Was it, friendly talking, or... shouting at him?

Aaah... Sagan went to the DD bus to apologise, rather than Cavendish going to the Bora bus to vent?

This would be fair, although Cavendish initiated the dangerous move on the inside. Sagan decided it wasn't going to be him the rider that goes down.

Sagan should drop places but not DSQ after seeing that, he went straight across Cav's line by the looks of it. The elbow flick looks worse from above.

I think a DQ is deserved.
But being dropped from the standings for today's stage AND losing a certain amount of points would be minimally adequate.

So Cav is already going down when Sagan "elbowed" him. Obviously that elbow flick was not a cause of Cav's fall.
No. The elbow has already hit him. Cognitive bias at its finest. Sagan pushes towards Cavendish and hits him and raises his elbow for stability, hitting him in the face slightly. But the elbow hits him.

At least Sagan is showing some decency off the bike. Don't think it was intentional, but dangerous.

Sagan was, I think checking how Cav was. His hand looked pretty heavily bandaged but he was moving his arms as normally.

No shouting or anything going on.

There was room for Cav to get through and IMO Sagan shut the door on him by going across his line.

I just noticed from the replay that Demare cuts in front of Bouhanni, who then has to stop pedaling to keep his balance, at the same moment that Sagan elbows Cavendish. Not that anyone will care about it in light of the crash.

The thing with Sagan is that he is one of the friendliest guys in the peleton. All the riders love him. I expect he successfully calmed Cav.
I also doubt it was on purpose. (EDIT: Watched it 3 more times and now I'm sure it WAS on purpose)
But that doesn't excuse what he did.

What about the other crash? Any GC besides Thomas down?

It will be interesting to hear Cav's comments once all this calms down and he looks at the replay as well.

Yeah I thought Demare's initial move was a bit dangerous.
