Had we ever seen Pog at a really high altitude before? I always expected he could get dropped by the likes of Jonas, Hindley, Superman, Bardet etc on something like Stelvio. But I didn't believe it until I saw it.
Not counting South Lake Tahoe in California (that stage broke the 2600 metre-mark too), pretty sure Loze is the highest up he's been in a professional race.

At the U23 level, he's done Iséran too.

I hoped but did not expect this: Pog beaten on the merits.

Kudos to Jumbo. Teams always talk about doing this but nearly always chicken out.

Pog’s Achilles heel was his fear of Rog and the fact Jumbo had Laporte and WvA ahead. Rog was going nowhere from 60kms out. And each attack he gapped Pog less and less. Pog still feared him when he should have only responded to Vingo and let his team come back and chase Rog. In the end Pog spent way too much energy on the Galibier.

I was definitely wrong thinking that Pog was untouchable. However, my #Fignon1984 becomes even closer to reality in a way I never imagined. Does this mean Pog will never again win the TDF…?

Unless Vingegaard bonks completely, the peloton aren't getting 2 minutes back given that he is the stronest rider in the race and also given the strength of his team. They can try to put the race to bed tomorrow by setting him up for another attack on Aple d'huez or just ride defensively to Paris since he will not lose that much time to Pog in the final TT. If I'm JV I would be going for the jugular tomorrow and try to take more time on his rivals. He now has a bullseye on his back from the other riders though so he will have to deal with that and see whether he can cope all the way to Paris.

Anyone can have a bad day. So better go all out tomorrow for a larger cushion.

Unless, I'm missing something, Vingegaard and his strong team are much too strong for the other riders in the tour, except for Pogacar, the only unknown quantity left.
Jumbo should try to go for the jugular tomorrow and put much more time in to Pogacar. Pogacar is still dangerous when he's two minutes back. See what he did to Roglic in the TT two years ago. He's not dangerous anymore when he's four minutes back or more...

I think the French with their global warming have sabotaged Pogacar now, no rain or cooler days in sight.

Ive been waiting for this climb to return for many years. In 1986, I was too young to understand how difficult climb it was although I remember how transfixed I was watching LeMond and Zimmermann pulling away. It wasn’t til years later that I realized that some Climbs disappear for decades and how special it was.
Thanks for sending me a tour down memory lane!
I was a 14yo kid by that time on my first ever vacation in France. A day my dad took the initiative to drive out the country and watch a very, very memorable stage experience. On a total different level than watching a few national A class races with maybe only families attending.

On the other hand that team is Jumbo Visma so they'll lose it somehow.

We saw today what a strong team can do for you, and what a liability a weak team can be. But a team can take a rider only so far. At some point tomorrow, we could again see Pog and V mano-a-mano on a big hill. Pog will be anxious to give it another shot.

If he's not ill, this is a good opportunity for Pogacar to show what he's made of. Not giving up after such a massive disappointment, but fighting back till the end.

Tbf if Vingegaard is stronger in longer climbs and Pog also suffers in the heat like some say than it could be over after tomorrow if Jumbo go hard on Galibier (as they should if they can). We also have stage 18 with a bunch of long hard climbs
That stage dont have long climbs..no so long...in that kind of stages Pogacar is better, and he has an extraordinary recovery..so he could put 2 minutes on Vingegard that day...that problem is that Jumbo is a very strong team...and that will be difficult. But this is not finished.

So when Van Aert brings back Vingegaard in the Cobbles stage he is not a good team member because he left Roglic and when Van Aert brings back Roglic he is not a good team member for leaving Vingegaard. It looks like he can only be a good teammate if he clones himself.

Leading a group with a team mate in it, doesn't mean you're helping him. But today, the choice of going back to Roglic was evident, and it was the wrong choice. There have been many other examples. Van Aert is potentially the best domestique there is, but he isn't used as such (or doesn't want to be used as such).

Its a really low blow to Wout. Wout rode an amazing race, but the teamcar CLEARLY ordered him back to Roglic for whatever reason.

Jumbo effectively killed Pogacar today. He had to respond to so many attacks he cooked himself and probably forgot to eat as well.

they definitely played the main part in it, but Pogacar even responded to guys like Lutsenko, so he also wasted a lot of energy on top of it again.

But then again what could have he done. If he would let Roglič go he had van Aert waiting. When they left Almeida at home it was always about numbers game against Pogačar.

From a cycling fan point of view i can appreciate this. As i am sure that teams as Ineos would just have waited.

In addition this is the first time he actually had to work at front. For a couple of days. As an individual and as a team leader. Team always doing a proper job and on top of that Pogačar being aggressive at the ends. And this is much harder then some realize. To defend the jersey for a good sum of days. Likely JV will still have issues with that too.

My take is if they don't drop him tomorrow he can still turn it around.

On vacation needed to left my daughter and wife on the beach to have 4g and watch it on GCN and it was worth it!! Amazing stage and Pogacar after all is human! Don’t be surprised if he test positive for covid in a couple of days! Some Almeida vibes on this stage to be honest… maybe he is already struggling with the virus but still negative. Let’s wait and see

I checked and they said they did it to annoy @Valv.Piti.

There was a discussion when he came back to Vingegaard's group - a short one, of course, but if everyone agreed, the discussion wouldn't have been there. That's how I saw it.

Even if it was the team's decision, I don't get why Van Aert is so often involved in the worst Jumbo Visma decisions.
