Tour de France Tour de France 2024, Stage 15 14/7 Loudenvielle-Plateau de Beille 197.7k

Season has just been going more and more downhill since Lennert Van Eetvelt hilariously won that UAE tour because he went in a pointless break on a flat stage with some Arab guys, permeated of course by the occasional good point like Alaphilippe and that Italian farmer in that break in the Giro.

It will however turn around tomorrow with a famous victory from none other than Wilco Kelderman, who will finally be given his own opportunity.

Looks like one for the break. should be a decent sized group going clear. More questions to be answered about Vingegaard's condition and possibilities for next week. Expect UAE to do the same as yesterday. Is anyone else in the top 10 capable of moving up the GC ? Rodriguez ?

How pooped are the guys after yesterday?
As it's July 14, lots of French guys in the break, and as UAE are 1 man short, I'd expect a gentle pace (by 2024 standards) and another Pogi attack about 3km out.
UAE have yellow so unless there's something we don't know about, they have no need to attack. Take it easy, enjoy the scenery, maybe munch on some crsips!

Today is the toughest MTF in this Tour. It will be interesting to compare the climbing times to Pantani's 1998 record of 43:20. Plateau de Beille is for the pure climbers: 15 km long, and it remains steep until 2 km before the finish.

The other climbs are tough as well, but probably too far from the finish for an open GC battle. Perhaps this time the breakaway will get enough leeway. Healy or Carapaz could try again. On quatorze juillet one can expect Bardet, Gaudu and other Frenchies in the break. Barguil is the only French winner on Bastille Day in the past twenty years.

So the mutants battle continues! Yesterday Pogi gained time but it was 40 seconds not 4 minutes so it's still quite open. Let's see how Visma-LAB and Vingo respond today: every stage can be different regarding form dynamics so one can't simply extrapolate yesterday's result to today. It should be rather hot so worse conditions for Teddy, a lot of climbing as well. Will UAE try to kill Vingo for good? Or will they be content with a late "stomp"? Will Vingo actually attack for the first time in this race?

Pantani's record was almost 1720 m/h of VAM for 43 minutes, which seems doable for our heroes (especially after watching Pog's performance yesterday). However, the stage length and total elevation will soften our heroes a bit (reducing the speed on the final climb). We will see.

Honestly, if he conditions would be 5-10 degrees warmer throughout the race as it was in 2022, I think it would be different. I really do think it zaps Pog, and these low 20's temperatures have been perfect for Pog. 30 degrees tomorrow in the valleys.

As I said in another thread, better stage for Viggo than yesterday one, but difficult he can drop Pogacar after what we saw yesterday.

Hope Quicky want to play and try something with Landa and Remco, he IS the best for the flat sections. Not very optimistic anyway he move first, he Will be at the expectative.
I think and Vingegaard doesnt have team to make hard the stage from the begining. The problem IS that the stages of Alps are short...Climbs not bad for him, but are short, so he must try something today

Yes, hot weather is a factor, not the only one, but one. Not super hot today, but yesterday was everything perfect for Poggi: they camenform some flat stages Flying. Flying on the first 70 km flat, not too fast Tourmalet, short stage, good temperature, great team work and an attack of 4 km when he is super.
It is going to be resslly difficult for Vingegaard to win this Tour but today can be very difficult .

This year there is no at the end a hard and quite long stage as Courchevel last year, but there are some good climbs and there are climbs from the begining, so I think we will have fight till the end.

Today in the valleys will be between 26 and 30 degrees, hottest at the bottom of Beille. I had hoped for more. At least the wind direction throughout the stage helps a bit, so at least the start of most climbs should feel quite hot. Still, this is merely an ordinary July day.

Nîmes will be hot - as always. Unfortunately, not even Nice will see blazing hot temperatures.
