Would you rather have races be decided by luck?
What do you mean? Now there's just a massive fight for positions up until the 3 km mark instead of the finish line. Are there really that many more crashes from km 3 till 0 than from km 6 till 3?

And the mechanical part of it? If you have a mechanical with 7 km to go on a flat stage, you're not coming back either so why the arbitrary 3 km mark? I mean, I get the crash part of the rule; it's to ease up on the fight positioning. That kind of makes sense. But what has mechanical issues to do with anything? You're not fighting the sprinter teams' trains for positioning because you don't want to be caught behind if you have a flat tyre. You're doing it because you don't want to be caught behind in case of a crash.

Personally, I don't like all these random rules in the sport. I like it as simple, clean and authentic as possible.

The peloton was complete but stretched until the moment Roglic attacked, so, if he was 30 places down with a flat tier and half the speed 40 seconds are nothing.

We have an expression in Denmark, I do not know if it is universal, but: "A thief thinks every man steals" - in this forum it can be translated to "every day cheaters thinks everyone ells cheats". No doubt that Evenepool was to far behind in the peleton and that he would have lost the 8 seconds anyway, but none of his previous actions in his short but impressive career suggest, that he wants to win by cheating/bending the rules - so why do you none talented "fans" have to accuse him of that?

The world is degrading every day...

Btw another impressive win for Mads, he has victories in every month since January - glad his manager last year told him, that he should be more serious...

I mean having an issue at the end of the race means a certain time loss for even the strongest rider. While at the same time, I am also against neutralizations for GC guys, so for me 3km rule is a reasonable compromise.

Back when I started watching 25 or so years ago, it was a 1 km rule and I am guessing it probably existed many years before that. If it was some random rule that nobody knows why it was brought in, it probably would have been removed by now,

I honestly would not want Evenpoel to lose the Vuelta to a puncture at an unfortunate time, but your mileage may vary.
He's not going to lose the vuelta because he lost 40 seconds with a tire change. Even if he lost more, he's still got several stages to get it back.

It was luck that he didn't lose more time, and it was luck that his rival injured himself. You haven't gotten your wish - luck has decided this vuelta.

swings & roundabouts.

(& for those wondering where my sympathies lie, Remco is my in fantasy cycling team. I'm not just hoping he wins, I'm needing him to!)

Sorry, I edited my post quite a few times to elaborate on my opinion :)

Sure. If to "be fair" we act like a 10:1 ratio of pointless hating to pollyannaish absurdity is equivalent.
Yes, devotional hype begets similarly devoted backlash, who could ever have anticipated that?

I mean, I don't have anything against Remco at all, but I'm getting treated like I do from many quarters, because of saying things like "he's unproven over three weeks just yet, so I'm not anointing him the winner after one GC stage in week one". It's a lot easier to arrive at an exaggerated ratio of "haters" if one treats anything other than support as though it is "hate".

Yeah, not questioning that happens, it's annoying. But again, it's a whisper compared to the idiotic comments coming the other way, and of course the volume of those comments are what causes the overreaction of his fans.

I am not following you here. Evenepoel did not lose more than 8 seconds to Roglic because this is how the rules are. And Roglic gained 8 seconds that he deserved to gain because of his riding also because of the rules.

I mean it does seem artificial and I get that, but 8 seconds gap on the stage is more reflective of the difference in strength than a 30 seconds/minute/whatever if both had their issues in a non 3km world.

The way I read the Remco thread is that virtually everyone including his biggest fans were wary of his ability to last three weeks or not ship big time over the past weekend.

for the people that cant fathom that Remco (or anyone) would fake a flat: yes he only lost 8 seconds, but think about the effort Roglic is putting in compared to the effort Remco put in for the last 3k. he saved a ton of energy and got the same time as the group that only lost 8 seconds while he was basically just warming down. this sport and more importantly the business of this sport is extremely cutthroat. i still don't see a puncture in that video. to call it a "conspiracy theory" is straight up ignorant. I actually think it would be extremely intelligent of Remco and QS to try it, because like I said earlier there's basically no way to prove there wasn't something wrong with his bike.
